I feel though this movie is very much Nimona's story, Ballister also struggled a lot with what Nimona went through, and that's why she was drawn to him. He was seen as an outcast and different from the beginning. And for what the Queen did for him to become a knight, accepting a regular street kid, he eventually did the same for Nimona knowing exactly what it felt to go through. Their stories are intertwined in this movie and it's just beautiful that they found acceptance in each other. I haven't read the graphic novel yet to compare, but I do hope this is kinda portrayed in there too

As someone actively suffering with suicidal ideation and intrusive thoughts, alongside anxiety AND trying to figure out my gender identity, Nimona hit me so damn hard in the feels. I’m someone who just doesn’t cry at films, but Nimona nearly did. I can relate so hard to her struggles with wanting to die but being terrified of those thoughts, and in the climax when she nearly killed herself with Gloreths sword got me so hard, not because a great character was going to die, but because of that pained scream that I have internalised within myself that I can relate to. This movie was fucking great and I’m glad my mates recommended it to me because I wouldn’t have watched it otherwise.

Nimona has a line that goes something like "I dont know whats scarier, that everyone wants to drive a sword through my heart, or that sometimes I want to let them." As a trans person who constantly sees others telling people like me that we are the curruption of morality, the downfall of society, are monsters for hypothetical crimes, and that we shouldn't exist, everyday it gets harder and harder to want to be you. It gets hard to want to go on and WANT to live in a world you know doesnt want you. This movie smacked me in the face because Nimona is going though the same thing I am. I rarly connect with characters this strongly, but Nimona? Oof. Dispite being told I shouldn't exist, I have people that are willing to understand, willing to learn, and willing to love.

This movie is honestly just so good and moving and this video does a great job at encapsulating that (especially in it's conclusion) The ending of the film alone when Nimona is stopped in front of the statue's sword is such great scene to let people know that there are people out there who care about you and don't want you to do something like that to yourself, that you are valid and worthy of the life you have. I think it’s kinda funny how some people are surprised when they find out Nimona’s shapeshifting is a metaphor for gender-queerness… while meanwhile every queer person who has ever written or read a fantasy book already knows that shapeshifting is THE gender-queer metaphor. 😂 Now, I want to be super clear. I think Nimona is a very creative take on this trope that comes from a very genuine place. I’m not trying to diss the author. And tbh I’m not even really trying to diss the people who are new to this trope either. I know not everyone is a nerd who reads a bunch of gay fantasy books like me and my friends do. My point is just that as someone who is familiar with queer fantasy tropes, I think it’s kind of funny seeing people watch Nimona and be like “wooooooaah!”. Because for a lot of fantasy fans, gender-fluid shapeshifters are a concept that’s been around for a while and is actually pretty agreed upon by fantasy writers…or at least the pro-lgbt ones. But I also don’t want me pointing this out to take away from how good this film is and how powerful the messages are and how effectively this trope is used to communicate a powerful message. Just like you said, predictable does not mean bad. I adored this movie. I also just want to say this is a fantastic and beautiful video, and I totally agree that this movie came out at the perfect time. We need more love and less hate in the world.

Great video! I just thought of another thing regarding the queer messaging: It's awesome that they have Ballister and Goldenloin in a romantic relationship, not just for the obvious representation reason, but also because it reminds young queer people that they are not immune to learning to be prejudiced, as both characters are throughout the movie. No one bats an eye at a relationship between two men, but they still hate Nimona because she's different even from that, and I think that pretty explicitly calls out the "LGB without the T" crowd, who are perpetuating the cycle of hate when you would hope they would be the most understanding and empathetic.

The end of this movie, when Nimona went to fall on the sword and kill herself, absolutely broke me. I cried like a baby. I have 4 children, and seeing other parents and peolple treat those of the LGBTQIA+ community the way they do, shakes me to my core. I had to explain to my kids while we were watching it (the two I watched it with are 7 and 10) why that part made me cry so hard and they ended up getting a bit teary eyed as well. I've raised them in a very open minded way where all people and all love is accepted and seeing it really open their eyes to what people, and their own friends, can be going through. They're such empathetic kids with huge hearts and that's something that i am so unbelievably proud of.

Love Nimona so much! Her chaotic energy and vibes, but she's willing to be accepted. She's the perfect soul that'll tell you that it's hard but everything will be okay along with your friends. I felt so happy that she found someone that loved her for who she is.

The fact that in the credits they end with a heart in the inclusive pride flag colours had me genuinely crying. Seeing characters who are just like myself in both Ballister and Nimona means the absolute world to me and I hope we’re able to get more films like this both from the same studio and others in the near future.

You get it ♥ What I love about this movie is that it tells a story of queerness and acceptance, but goes beyond the personnal level of "oh, this person used to reject a queer character, and now they're cool with it, hooray" and shows the political aspect of it, how hate is taught and institutionalized in a society, and how the only way to change that is to question our institutions and our beliefs. Very few stories get that full picture !

Love the movie. It speaks to me so much as a queer person who isn't exactly accepted by most of my family. Also, is that the SpiritFarer OST in the background? If not, wondering what it is.

There's so much to this movie that I really enjoyed and loved but also really resonate with on its messages and themes and allegories. While I'm not LGBTQ, there's a lot to Nimona that I can deeply relate to and get what's its putting down as a young Black woman in America and having to deal with systematic racism or other froms of prejudices and racial profiling and other bullshit because of being both black and a woman. Especially amongst Nerd culture or within Geek fandom circles. This movie hits on so many levels that I think any minority person can relate too on some level.

Im not sure it's acceptance thats needed, everywhere you look, 'ACCEPT ME' is posted on billboards, commercials, etc. I think it understanding is what we need. People are shoving their own agendas down everyones throats so much that no one is able to sit down and understand what they truly are, what they truly want, etc. They are more concerned with 'do i match everyone else?'

"I don't know what's scarier.. The fact everyone in this kigdom wants to run a sword through my heart.. Or that sometimes I want to let them" broke me and made me sob so hard I'm "not" queer (questioning mostly) but seeing the way LGBTQ+ people are being treated now a days just scares me..

It's crazy how the Paranorman, Box Trolls, Corpse Bride, all the Pinocchio 2022 movies, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon, Goofy Movie, Windell & Wild, Frankenweenie, Kubo and the Two Strings, Coraline, Turning Red, The Grinch, Puss in Boots the Last Wish, Chicken Run, Chicken Little, The Mitchell vs The Machines, Rescue Rangers, IRON GIANT, The Lorax, and ESPECIALLY The Road to El Dorado, and so many other videos are goofy and light hearted. And right before this I watched your video on The House, so I wanted to see a goofy, hilarious video like you always make. And then I get hit with this beautiful, emotional speech that left me in tears(couldn't find the happy tears emoji)! Amazing videos man. Keep doing a good job 👍

What I love about Nimona is that it's LGBTQ+ themes of acceptance and identity can relatable to anyone, whether they're LGBTQ+ or not - because, unfortunately throughout history, a lot of societies and cultures have done similar things to so many innocent people like the city did to Nimona for a long time, either just because the slightest bit different or could be easy scapegoats to be blamed/outcasted. A lot of the themes it had reminded me so much of movies, like Paranorman/Box Trolls and Iron Giant due to that.

I actually watched the movie yesterday with my bf. We’re both pan and I’m non-binary tho with more masc pronouns. So while watching in the beginning I said that boldheart is had lots of the things that people are prejudiced against. He’s lower class, a person of color, gay, and of course I was gonna say “but at least he isn’t disabled.” Then his arm got chopped off which added to the list. Of course the movie didn’t play into all these factors but still they made the main character other than Nimona have lots of things that people in our society hate. I really enjoyed the movie even tho I annoyed the hell out of my boyfriend while watching it. He enjoyed it as well.

in the scene where nimona falls into balloster's open arms, if you look, it shows in the background all the screens of the same thing. him holding her. the screens of the system that portrays her very being as wrong surround them, and even if the moment is portrayed as evil by the media, it surrounds them with a reminder of how much they care for each other, despite how "wrong" it may seem. she is surrounded with love and acceptance and belonging, just because of one person; one person that touched her. touched her in a way that no one had ever dared to. i was bawling my eyes out at this movie, harder than i had in months lmao
