Back in 1978 I was a front desk clerk at what was then Portman Intercontinental London. ( now a Nobu hotel ) . I checked her in. Didnt really know who she was but a few older folk in our team seemed to know. Guess she took a shine to me, as whenever she wanted something, she would be calling for me... The NETFLIX release "What Happened Miss SImone? exposes many more people to her genius. She couldn't have lived any other life - the demons date back to her parents being told to sit in the back during her recital when she was a young girl. That was her first exposure to discrimination and she saw it everywhere. When the movement gave her voice a meaning and direction she found herself on a journey from which she could never return. Her passion - the reason we loved her was also her un-doing; She told Martin Luther King Jr. she ain't no non-violent person - she was a fighter and fought with her piano keys and voice and then couldn't stop until she left the States.

Where would we run to in this time of epidemy? Would we ask the rock, the sea, the mountain or the sky to hide us?

@Ralf Greweling In my humble opinion, it doesn't matter. The KKK, diseases, war, past and coming ecological disasters... They are all the direct consequence of human nature, which we are all guilty of. The point (well, my point anyway) is, if we, as a specie, continue to eagerly fuck up this magnificent place the day will come when there will be no place for us to run and hide to. Humanity is the Sinnerman. EDIT: slight nuance: ecological disaster have always been around, but human behavior facilitates and encourages it. ALSO: I'm from the land of chocolate, waffels and beer, Belgium. So excuse my English! :)

@@pollepunani9400 that day comes, and any things in this world, any kind of technology or whatever can't save us. Cause we mudered the earth. Human with technology and all smart gadgets becomes more more stupid.

carol matthews i love her too, but she did have serious issues. to ignore that is to not accept all who she was. she overcame a lot. there's a new documentary either on hbo or showtime about ms. simone and it opens with her daughter saying that nina was always nina simone not just on stage and that was the problem. that's not to take away from her enormous talent. she wanted to be a classical pianist but the world wasn't ready for a black woman classical pianist. and yes the social times did get to her as well as so many others. that's why she left the country for so long so she could experience a bit of sanity in her life. she is one of my heroes.

George Haddad I can't tell if you were being facetious with that comment. The stats consistently show unfair advantage shown towards white people with respect to pretty much everything from high school admissions to employment. Sure, there aren't any blatant Jim Crow laws denying colored people entrance into a restaurant anymore, and a lot of progress has been made, but it's only about halfway done. Still lots more to do before the USA is truly an egalitarian society.

It's hard to comprehend (as an englishman) the level of institutional racism that allowed KKk to parade in their thousands in the capital of the US and that they were unmasked. It's a shocking piece of film. Just like the fascists parading through the east end of London in the 30's. Thank you for posting.
