She was a fighter. I am a Black guy, but I never discovered Nina Simone until a White friend turned me on to her back in the 90's. I was so intrigued by her. I started reading about her....and realized that she was one of the Black people who took the stones so that I can be where I am today.

“I think what you’re trying to ask is why am I so insistent upon… giving out to them that BLACK-ness, that BLACK-power, that BLACK pushing them to identify with black culture; I think that’s what you’re asking. I have no choice over it; in the first place, to me we are the most beautiful creatures in the whole world, black people. And I mean that in every sense, outside and inside. And to me we have a culture that is surpassed by no other civilization but we don’t know anything about it. So again, I think I’ve said this before in this same interview, I think at some time before. My job is to somehow make them curious enough or persuade them, by hook or crook, to get more aware of themselves and where they came from and what they are into and what is already there, and just to bring it out. This is what compels me to compel them and I will do it by whatever means necessary.”

She seemed to be a fierce, uncompromising, principled woman of strength, integrity, and great character. May she continue to rest peacefully and may we continue to lionize and canonize her as one of our heroes so as to perpetuate her legacy for centuries to come.

She means SO much to me because she sacrificed some of her accolades, while she was still with us physically , to STAND for what she believed and spoke the truth especially at that time when if you wanted to be a "Star" ..Seems like ppl of that era sang what they were told and answer all interviews with the "Correct" answer. She had a fearlessness about her and I Love her.

So sad to read the comments wrought with ignorance and hatred. Someone who so beautifully shares her perspective and love of her own---her own self, her own culture, her own beauty--our collective beauty. I am so blessed to be a part of such a rich and deserving group of people. ALL cultures and people have two sides to them. Dark and light, yin and yang, sun and moon. Why is it that we are harshly judged and persecuted beyond all others for half of the whole?

Blacks should be loved and appreciated more nowadays since their ancestors and they themselves have suffered and are suffering so much already...RACISM HAS GOT TO STOP!!
