Mario Golf Super Rush genuinely disappoints me. This is by far one of the worst cases of the "Finish it Later" approach Nintendo has done so far. But it goes beyond just missing content, it's genuinely worse from almost every angle compared to previous Mario Golf titles. The $40 3Ds game launched with better content, it was more creative, there were way better animations, etc. Super Rush legitimately feels like a budget title. Definitely working on my own video for it.

Imagine if Mario Kart Wii launched with the base Mario Kart 64 characters and a few new ones, and no retro courses, and then Nintendo added those in free updates. I'd argue that the original Splatoon was pretty bare on content at launch too, and it wasn't that far off from the level of ARMS. The reason it worked for that game and not all these other ones is two-fold I feel: Splatoon was incredibly fun, unique and felt fresh in a way that an old IP like mario or kirby never could, and they put out new content for it immediately and constantly in order to keep the game feeling that way. Every week there was at least one new thing to look forward to, and the content they added to Splatoon post-launch was often stuff that fundamentally changed the game, with them adding completely new weapon classes, maps and even entire game modes. Comparatively, Nintendo's other games mostly stick to just adding stuff like new characters and maybe a slightly different stage every now and then. They're all games that could never be the lightning in a bottle that Splatoon first was, and simultaneously their updates all do far less to try and make up for their lack of content

@Some-guy-on-the-internet

Not only did Splatoon's updates make meaningful additions to the game, they were so frequent that the lack of base content almost didn't matter. Compare that to now where Nintendo's finish it later approach has devolved into making miniscule changes once every several months. The difference is huge. Super Mario Party was basically left to rot for 3 years before it finally got an online mode and no one cared anymore by then. Splatoon may have laid the foundation for this strategy, but the way it was executed actually kept players coming back. Nintendo failed to do this in the same way with their other games and it lead to bad games with nothing to come back later for. I generally dislike the live service model but if you're gonna do it, at least do it right.

If you advertise your game as a live service, that’s pretty much a guarantee that it will be incomplete at launch. @@papaG6423 True, Kirby: SA was made like a celebration game for the fans, but fans are fans to start because they like things on THEIR OWN merits, not something else's. Kirby: SA was either ridiculously rushed or trying to ride the franchise's past, its own story and aesthetic and the novelty of its Friend Heart gimmick, leaving the finer gameplay quality to rot even if such gameplay works technically. Like, even the graphics aren't properly polished for the play: the main gameplay is 30 FPS even though you can clearly see in the menus that the gorgeous animations were built for 60 FPS. And some dangers can get lost against the brightly-lit backgrounds, leading to getting cheapshotted despite most of the game having little challenge overall. And even if the lighting was fixed to improve visibility and performance and the player health nerfed to actually keep the player more on their toes and make the Friend Heart gimmick not completely broken but still helpful, the levels aren't exactly the best built. I call the game Kirby's Mega Man X5 moment: the point where a consistently good long-running game series takes a nosedive out of the blue from going big everywhere BUT the gameplay quality but isn't _quite_ in the pits. So it has more problems than simply being a victim of things that led to the need to finish it later.

Great video! I think one of the big issues is they're using these free update formulas with franchise that have numerous entries from them, so we generally know how they work. Splatoon was fresh, literally! It was a shooter with some really unique mechanics, so even with the somewhat lacking content at launch, there was just getting used to the gameplay itself with millions of other players that made things alright with the smaller amount of content. But even with Splatoon, they had a very constant stream of content that was almost weekly! Super Mario Maker was a brand new idea, and I'd argue it definitely did have sufficient content at launch. Even if it was a little lacking though, it was such a novel concept that it would've worked a bit more had it had the "finish it later" approach. Mario Tennis? Mario Golf? Animal Crossing? Kirby? These aren't new franchises! Sure, they have some new gameplay changes and additions, but they're still the same general mechanics across their respective franchises. So, to have lacking content at launch with THESE games is far more offensive. We're already familiar with the franchises, but they're more shallow because they just lack content!

The only game I don't mind having this kind of problem is Kirby Star Allies. I don't know why, but when I played it first when it came out, I always wanted to play more of it and I ended up 100% completing story mode in 3 days and the rest of the game in 5 more days. I also completed Guest star mode with every single character and when the other 2 waves came out I was super happy, especially with the 3rd one where they brought back Magolor (my favourite Kirby-releated final boss), Taranza and Susie (Return to Dreamland and Planet Robobot are my favourite Kirby games and I can't decide between these 2 which one is my absolutely favourite🤷♂️). I 100% completed another file in Kirby Star Allies a couple of months ago and I'm saving the last file for when the next game is announced (recently I've also started to replay Return to Dreamland, that game is so good)

@CarbonRollerCaco

Star Allies _works_ technically, but has such weak level design that it gets boring. And it's too easy even for a Kirby game because the health values for all the characters aren't balanced around the ally system, making said system OP rather than take things from rough to more manageable. And it's not even challenging in the right way when it does get hard: hazards often blend in with the too-bright backgrounds. I was very late in the base game with a whole vault of lives before taking my first death, and it was due to a stray flying enemy or projectile (I don't remember which) that I mistakenly thought myself safe from because I couldn't see it clearly enough to anticipate its movements. (I think I only got that close to death because I was trying to figure out one of the Copy Abilities on the spot.) Boss movements and attacks are similarly camouflaged. But props for loving Return to Dream Land. That game is godly. Super Star Ultra's still my favorite game of all time, but other than Star Allies, you can't really go wrong with Kirby. Still, he NEEDS to go full-on 3D some day. I think the problem is that they still want to keep the games accessible to young children without off-putting more hardcore gamers, and thus may be baffled on how to accomplish that in a free 3D environment.

I actually found Kirby Star Allies to be pretty fun, even with Nintendo's "Finish It Later" approach. Plus, seeing how Super Rush is my first experience with Mario Golf, it actually turned out to be pretty good for me. If you didn't like them, that's fine. As for me, I didn't get Mario Tennis Aces because it deviated from what the Mario Tennis games have been doing for years (that being while the other Mario Tennis games having an approach of "have a fun game of tennis and have a story mode revolving around just playing tennis", Mario Tennis Aces had a story mode where this evil racket possesses Luigi and the Wario Bros. and you had to save the world from it... which flopped miserably), whereas Mario Golf Super Rush stuck to the same formula of "have a fun game of golf and have a story mode revolving around just playing golf" even with the "Finish It Later" approach in mind. That said, I'm still thinking on addressing this issue to Nintendo sometime. I'm not defending it, but at the same time I don't exactly hate it either.

Mario Golf Super Rush? More like, Super RUSHED. I'm glad someone else has made that joke. I really hate this new business practice. For games like Splatoon, it makes context in the games world. There are games though like Animal Crossing: New Horizons that even after it's final update, STILL DOESN'T HAVE ALL THE CONTENT IN THE GAME. Games like Pokémon honestly make sense. You can't expect for Pokémon to balance like, 3,000 individual Pokémon by Gen 30. The main issue here imo is that they use this as an excuse to rush a game but the thing is, what about after the Switch goes offline and you can't update your game anymore? The ARMS content added wasn't really related to the complaints it lacked content. The roster of characters was small, but it was the beginning of a new fighting game franchise, so I completely understand it. What it really lacked was more fleshed-out single player content. The online play was actually fantastic, and the characters added later all *felt* like a bonus. That said, i agree with everything else! I'm kinda fine with Animal Crossing since it's a slow-paced life sim and MOST of the stuff they add is seasonal, so it makes sense to release it seasonally! I also kind of like that it takes time for big features to come in thematically, since it adds to the feeling that you're living on a remote island that's only just beginning to develop. I understand why people expected more at launch, though. It had been a long time since New Leaf, and they didn't make it clear that any of the big missing features were planned to return.

While in World tour for example they had creative and fun animations. Also they barely have any voicelines apart from yahoos and grunts. I think the longest phrase a character says in this game is Daisy's Bogey animation where she says "whatever" meanwhile in Toadstool tour we had full sentences. The special shots are really cool but some are clearly more overpowered and that's because 7/16 of the characters have unique effects to their shots while the rest get generic blast aways. It's amazing how a company that filled my childhood with such joy would grow to annoy me with game droughts and really horrible games (Wii U era) and unfinished games and baffling and stupid decisions (Switch era). I stopped playing Star Allies after the Marx update, quit Aces not even a month later, and I hated just about everything in Super Mario Party. These updates don't keep people interested, if anything it kills the game faster and by the time something of substance comes, it's too little, too late. Oh yeah, an online update to Super Mario Party? It's over two years too late! Ended up selling it and Star Allies. I want this stuff in the game at launch, but by the time it comes, I don't care anymore. New Horizons has left many bitter, probably way too late to get many back into the game. That New Donk City course looks cool, but who knows? Nintendo will probably host a September Direct and show it off and I'm not going to care by then. I'll be playing Sonic Colors and the new WarioWare by then. Mario Golf Super Rush will be dead within a month, the online will be a ghost town and when the updates come, it'll be too late.

As someone who is played and be in Mario Golf super rush you are probably right. The game is fun especially with friends but it’s just not enough content. The golf courses feel very uninspired and all of them feel like courses you would see in any other golf game excluding Bowser‘s castle. Speed golf is actually a pretty cool idea and it is fun. Battle golf in my opinion is easily one of the best parts about the game but the problem is there is only two courses for it so the replay value is very limited. The story mode I did have decent fun with and it took me about 10 hours to complete but it does have many problems. I think they should’ve made 5 more golf courses but these five would actually feel like they’re in the Maria universe. They should’ve made at least 3 battle golf courses to. They also should’ve made side missions in the story mode because well I do love the hub worlds there’s nothing to do in them And I have many other thoughts about the story mode to trust me

I'm writing this comment on Februrary 25, 2022 This video is mind-blowing to me! I can't believe that Nintendo is turning into an average AAA game company by releasing unfinished games at launch

@@maplemiles3381 not all of the games made by Nintendo were launched with enough content but I admit that most of them were finished at launch and adding it with free content or updates to make it more enjoyable (maybe I'm stupid) But I'm still worried that Nintendo is releasing unfinished games at this point. Some of those games were good but it can disappoint some of their fans with lack of content

I usually don’t mind free updates from online focused games like Splatoon because they need to keep people playing. But other than that it gets annoying getting the bare minimum in some games.

As much as I like Mario Golf: Super Rush, the free content updates with the lack of content at launch are NOT ok. It’s definitely disappointing that many Switch games have been limiting content at launch to only make people wait until later to experience everything.

ARMS support was necessary, at least they were able to give some revelance between the Splatoon 2 Updates and even if that game launched with every content, it wouldn't last that much. Animal Crossing unfortunately fell during Covid and many things got pushed back by a lot. The only bad example to me are Golf, Tennis and on one hand Kirby.

Ok but lets say that nintendo add everysingle holiday feature to new horizons what do we have now? Updates for small holiday items that you can buy anytime? Thats not big enough to qualify itself as an "update"

One of the problems is, They have the content READY. For example, The NDC Golf course looks like it is done. It SHOULD have been in the base game, but they are going to wait like 2-3 months to put it in. (When no one will care)

I really wouldnt have such a problem with this if there was some reason. but like..there just isnt! Hell, if they released Super Rush in November they likely would of gotten more sales because it was a holiday release. It seems so strange to me, it makes sense with games like Splatoon, Splatoon is a games as a service model because its a multiplayer shooter, you need new maps and weapons to spice up the game. Not to mention having players "come back to the game" doesnt help nintendo whatsoever when the updates are free.

@@Demeech Exactly my point. Hell, they could of released this game (super rush) in November with the update content that they're most likely developing or have already developed, and it could of sold just as well if not better since its a pretty great holiday title.

It's crazy. Personally I'd say if you want to make DLC, MAKE THE ACTUAL FULL GAME FIRST, and make sure it's plentiful of content to keep players busy, then make the DLC worth it. Don't add stuff that should be in the game at the start, like stage selects, but extra things that are completely new.

How are the games not full games? And no, perceived lack of content doesn't make a game not a full game.

Kirby Star Allies was 100% complete. It didn't lack content, it was just disappointing. It had about as much content as Kirby games usually do. The Dream Friends they added over time were actually amazing imo. If they were all added at the start, I definitely wouldn't've played through Guest Star with all of them. Instead, the spread out releases meant I was able to come back to the game and enjoy brand new content. Heroes in Another Dimension was fantastic, but I honestly don't think it should've been in the game at launch. Heroes in Another Dimension was the culmination of what was slowly built up with the Dream Friend Wave updates. The mode focuses on the Dream Friends that were added, and anyone who came back to play as the Dream Friends each wave would be familiar with them, and able to enjoy the grand finale. I would much rather play Star Allies as it happened, then have to wait 8 whole months to get 1 hour or so of fantastic side content. Playing as all the Dream Friends in Guest Star would've gotten old fast, and i certainly wouldn't've got as much enjoyment out of the game as I did. -- Mario Tennis & Mario Golf do not have "finish it later" approaches imo. The content they add is cool, but it's not amazing, and it doesn't "complete" the game in any means. Aces still lacked worthwhile content when it was all said and done, and I'm sure Golf will be the same way. Would we rather play the game now? Or wait a year to get a tiny bit more content that won't make the game that much better? The problem isn't that they are "finishing it later". The problem is that there isn't much content in general. This is a problem with Camelot specifically. Animal Crossing is pretty much the only game not developed by Camelot that seems to have a problem with this.

ARMS was a problem too. But I respect your points 100% Kirby Star Allies wasn't optimized well either. Why did it run at 30fps and have 7 second loading screens during levels?
@DaNintendude
3 жыл бұрын
@@Demeech Yeah, Star Allies definitely didn't run well. It actually had frame drops quick a bit in more busy scenarios. Super Kirby Clash was also in 30fps, but by Kirby Fighters 2, they finally got it to run 60fps, so hopefully from now on they've figured out how to optimize it enough to run higher / more consistent frame rates.

That's just not true though. Most of the bosses lacked proper EX forms before heroes in another dimension, which every other mainline kirby game since 2010 has managed to do. Even after all the dlc, bosses like the fox and raccoon got the shaft. You can argue they already had ex forms, but does it really count when theres hardly a visual difference and the attacks barely change?

3:44 As a HUGE fan of Kirby (beat all the games, own a bunch of merch) ....that's kind of the point of the games? They're supposed to be easy platformers with a unfittingly dark final boss. The only skill involved in the game is making sure you hold onto certain abilities for certain rooms so you can obtain hidden items and such.

I agree with your point. It can be done well but the problem is that they’re doing these content updates when the games don’t have enough. And only some do. For example Smash Ultimate. That game had almost 70 characters at launch, tons of stages, a good amount of modes, a story mode, spirits, etc. and they added tons of characters and other stuff later on, but the game had enough content at launch. So it kept people coming back. But Kirby Star Allies? That game launched with a campaign that’s beatable in four hours maybe less, lack of mini games, and it being pretty easy in general. Hell, even the dlc they added wasn’t enough. I doubt that the dlc campaign was even that long.

I only consider DLC okay when it's not used to finish a game. The dlc for Animal Crossing was an exception due to the fact that it released during the pandemic to help us get through it. But for Mario Golf or Tennis, they only did it to release content faster than it would've seemed. I dont want to have to download the game and use my 16 GB on this. I want the full game on my cartridge that I paid 60$ for, I don't think that is too much to ask for.
