I'm so tired of the constant "new thing bad, old thing good" discourse. I owned a Wii U during it's lifespan, I enjoyed my time with it well enough, but it was easily the worst era for Nintendo consoles. We were lucky the 3DS was as good as it was, because on the home console front we were really in the trenches. The posts I saw on Twitter mostly boil down to free online and a home menu that wasn't basic. Oh and I guess the Wii U had more "soul" than Switch (Compare NSMBU to Wonder for that argument to crumble).
@ianeons9278
5 ай бұрын
What are you talking about. The Wii U was easily the best home Nintendo console up until that point. Its games were the best in their series up until that point. In 2017 to 2021 the Wii U was definitely better than the Switch because half of the games were Wii U ports, but that’s not to say that the Switch didn’t have great original games during that time. 2022 to 2024 was when the Switch finally started to surpass the Wii U in terms of great original games, but even then the Wii U is a very close second. If it weren’t for masterpieces last year like TOTK, Pikmin 4, and Mario Wonder the Switch would probably still be behind the Wii U in terms of great original games. But overall the Wii U and Switch will probably always be the two greatest in my book (But who knows what the Switch 2 will be like).

"We had a significant Virtual Console".... by the end of the Wii U's life. People often forget how slowly Nintendo added new games to VC. That's not as different as today, but at that time was even more insane because most of the games were already available on Wii's VC (GBA and DS were only added from 2014 and 2015), which you could access by changing to Wii channel.

The Wii U had more charm but The Switch just a better game console overall. Not only are we getting games that are a lot more creative and more frequently, its also more adaptable and appeals to a broader audience. The biggest problem with the Wii U is that its basically was trying to capitalize off the success of the Wii which at that point, the people already moved on to Smart Phones and tablets. And before you say, "It works for Sony" just remember that its always been that way with their consoles.

The Wii U stopped receiving support pretty much immediately when the Switch came out, but that’s how historically most previous Nintendo consoles were, commercially successful or not. I mean the N64, GameCube, and Wii pretty much stopped receiving support immediately once their successors came out. There’s even more examples than that if you look at basically every Nintendo console ever except for the NES/Famicom, SNES/Super Famicom, maybe the DS, and of course the 3DS/2DS.
@ianeons9278

I think that people should stop comparing the GamePad to the portability of the Switch. The GamePad was always meant to be a controller, not a handheld. The 3DS/2DS was already their handheld. Comparing the Wii U to the Switch is like comparing the PS4 or PS5 to the Switch, it’s a home console being compared to a hybrid/portable. They’re completely different and fill completely different roles. However I will say that the desire to make the GamePad its own console after the Wii U’s release is probably what led directly to the Switch.
@CoryBoehm

I think the WiiU is unfairly treated. The best selling Switch game is a WiiU port. It had a debut of a new top tier franchise, Splatoon and a spin-off Mario Marker to none on the Switch. Also every Zelda game include BotW could be played on the WiiU, the Switch as of now nope. The WiiU was truly underappreciated for what it offered.

The biggest thing the Wii U had over Switch was the features. You mentioned a couple like Miiverse, but I'm thinking of having an actual messaging system (including video messages), apps like Netflix, a TV tuner/remote, etc. But as cool as those things were, it was WAAAAAY behind in games. The future is also going to be much brighter for Nintendo. The Wii was intended for Casual Nintendo gamers. The Wii U tried to do that too, but the Wii U gamepad was not as easy to understand as the Wii Remote's Motion controls. The Switch didn't have that problem, it's a handheld home console hybrid, nothing more, nothing less. “Wii U was priced at $350” Don’t forget that the Basic White Set was already $300 at launch and the $350 Deluxe Set received a price cut only a year in to $300 while the basic white set was discontinued. The Switch meanwhile started at $300 and still is, the exact same price the Wii U was most of its lifespan. The Switch OLED meanwhile is $350 so that’s the same price that the Deluxe Black Set of the Wii U was at launch and for the first year. So the Wii U and Switch are equal in pricing. That’s why it’s ridiculous to think that the Wii U was overpriced when the Switch is the same amount. Both were/are also cheaper than their competition for the most part.

“The Switch had 8+ years of games with zero droughts.” Sure the Wii U had a few droughts here and there, but the Switch and pretty much every other Nintendo console does/did too. Folks are on INSANE copium with trying to say the Wii U Era was better than the Switch Era. Because I feel like they're just people who are HEAVILY misremembering that period out of nostalgia for its few bangers... or people who are salty at the Switch, but actually were not with Nintendo enough to understand what came before it. Now to give Wii U credit... its main advantages are definitely Aesthetic and Online. As it can't be denied that it has a lot of menu personality, that Switch just doesn't have. And that energy was also present in some of Nintendo's presentations. (Though granted, I feel like people don't understand that Nintendo's "quirky skits" were VERY hit or miss, and didn't actually address the system's bigger issues... But I digress...) Plus, actually OWNING retro games instead subscribing to a paid service for them is far better. With free online to boot. But when we take a look at the actual games both systems can offer... this is where everything falls apart. Yes, Switch got a lot milage out of ports of Wii U's games, and remastering or remaking games from other generations... But fact of the matter is... not only are many of those ports the definitive versions of those Wii U games, AND said refreshs of other games are often REALLY good, but Switch's own unique games are some of the best Nintendo has made. With far more hits than misses. And that's just an objective fact. And unlike with Wii U, where you had to wait months to get a killer exclusive like those... Switch pumps them out at a pretty great rate by comparison... and I mean, by comparison that we didn't need to wait almost entire seasons for games lol. And yes, let's also just ignore that Switch covers franchises and genres that Wii U needed months and sometimes YEARS to get to. Yeah Wii U had BOTW too, but it was at the end of its life. It got Splatoon 1, but it was near the end of its life span. It didn't have a mainline Kirby, Metroid, or Animal Crossing. While Switch covers those series, and has MULTIPLE installments for them. Like how yes, it has Xenoblade X... But Switch has the whole main Xenoblade trilogy. But when we talk 3rd party support. Hoooooo boi. Its a WRAP. I'm surprised the video didn't hammer this in more. Because 3rd party support for Wii U faded to crumbs almost i m m e d i a t e l y after its first year. It got so bad, INDIE DEVS were talking about how they didn't want to bring over games. INDIES. Surprised we got the few we did like Shovel Knight. Because otherwise, you were just fresh out of luck almost if you wanted anything other than Nintendo games. And even those felt sparce because of how Wii U felt like it would barely put enough of them out. As to where with Switch, do I really gotta explain how much more varied the 3rd party support is? How much more consistently Nintendo puts out their games now that they understand HD development better? Like come the heck on man... Anyway. Sorry for the long comment. Great video lmao.

Even though Wii U games are ported to the Switch, they are still fun at some point.

I think the Wii U is a good console, but I agree that the switch era is better than how the Wii U was.

Having to wait 6 months for games not a fun time. Wind Waker HD Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Xenoblade X and Bayonetta 1 and 2 my favorite, games on there along with Mario Kart 8

I have every Nintendo system except the Virtual Boy and the Wii U. Sorry, the Wii U sucked and wasn't worth my time or money.

@ianeons9278 this is a discussion of opinions. I have been around since the NES and comparatively, in my opinion, the Wii U didn't have the same impact as any other Nintendo console. A lot of people trash the GCN, but that had some bangers (again, more than Wii U). The fact that Wii U had so many games ported to the very next console, something Nintendo hasn't done with any other console, shows that Nintendo even acknowledged that the console was a failure. I actually considered buying the Wii U just for Zelda BotW, until I found out it was coming to Switch.

Between Wii u and Switch, I unfortunately just have to go Wii U. Does the switch have a lot of good games? Yes. Is the switch hybrid style more appealing then the gamepad? Yes. But the Wii U has something that edges it over for me. The Wii U has StarFox and the Switch doesn't. It's not a good starfox or the starfox I want but it's StarFox. The software sells the system and the Switch just didn't and it dropped it down for me.

The Switch was overloaded with ports from 2017 to 2021, but 2022 to 2024 was when the Switch finally started to develop an amazing library of original games, not to say that they didn’t have great original games to begin with, it just took longer because of all the overpriced Wii U ports in the beginning and Covid.

@@ianeons9278 back up your oppinion by listing off what made the Wii U better? You can't base it off of 1-2 games either, you got to list off at least 5 games.

You’re in the overwhelming majority. WiiU has mostly had its games ported to Switch h and they received upgrades. Switch would still be better even without Mario Kart 8. If anything, we want Xenoblade X and it never came. But we got DE, XC2, Torna, 3 and FR. All better games.

I own a Wii U and Switch and I can say with certainty that they are the two best Nintendo consoles ever. I think that the Switch may be better at this point, but the Wii U is a very close second if not better in certain ways.

@@10k-Noodles That’s just copium for people who missed out on the Wii U. Though I think I might like the Switch more at this point, I think that people saying that the Wii U is better still has a lot of merit in a lot ways. I think that the people who don’t like the Wii U most likely never owned it or don’t like Nintendo to begin with. The Wii U era was unmatched game and quality wise until the Switch era really picked up in 2022 - 2024, not to say they had great original games before that. Maybe I’m biased because the Wii U was my first ever Nintendo console back when I was 7, but you have to admit that us Wii U enjoyers do have points but that doesn’t stop the Switch from also being great to. But that’s just my opinion. I don’t know why people argue so much over stuff like this.
