You don't need to choose between swapping or charging. You can do both and choose which for each use case. If you want, you can be as fast as any petrol car with this EV. Or you could hang it on a charger and enjoy lunch while charging. You don't have that choice with any other EV.

This is how electric vehicles should be done for charging. But the process could be streamlined to a like a gas station set up. Where you drive into a spot. You get out & initiate the process. The stall does the rest. You pay @ the stall or go in. Get your stuff & leave. No need for the auto driving part. Just parkin in a spot & the spot can move the car whichever like in this vid to line up. And under ground could be dozens of batteries. And if you place a couple in every city & a couple along highways starting. Then your market for electric cars will go up & will get more & more electric cars on the road. And when you buy the car you're not buying the battery. The battery makers could deal up with government to make the batteries free of charge & you pay for charging & a small service fee for the swap. It would reduce a lot of issues & create a huge market & also be helpful.

While this looks very cool. I have to ask a question just as a layman. Why don't they just make modular batteries instead of trying to screw on the entire battery? What I mean is say have eight or sixteen smaller batteries either a person or a machine could replace in unison. Think of it like having batteries in the remote for TV. Just much larger. It would seem to me if they could make that a standard it would be just dealing with a facility where you put your old ones to recharge and get fresh ones loaded in for you and you pay a monthly or yearly revolving charge. I don't know though, this may just not be feasible and I'm not an engineer. This is what peeople think they want based on their gas experience, but it's a bad long term plan. Imagine buying an expensive new car, then you go swap the battery out one day with one that may have been abused or is simply bad. Now you're stuck with that battery and you'll never get your original one back that you took care of. Also, this will require many more battery packs to be produced than necessary, and batteries are already one of the limiting factors for EV production numbers. it makes no financial sense to let expensive batteries sit idle waiting for someone to come by and use them. The only way they can fund this sort of thing is by charging you more to cover the cost of the spare batteries and the station. People need to stop treating EVs like gas cars when it comes to "refueling" times. These swap stations will also only work with certain types of vehicles and battery designs and may be broken when you show up to use them. Then what do you do? Tesla can open their network to other EVs and any car can charge at them, and there are usually 8 or more chargers there for multiple redundancies in case one is broken and some are being used. By the time the masses adpot EVs, there will be plenty of charging stations along major routes for road trips, and you need to stop and eat/take breaks anyway.

Battery swapping is a solution to a problem that is constantly diminishing as charging infrastructure increases, and charging times reduce. You usually have to stop on longer trips for a break anyway. And most people only make longer trips on an occasional basis. Tesla dropped the concept of battery swapping in 2013, in favour of the Supercharger network, which they are now beginning to open up to all makes of EV. I see no long term future in this for the majority. Constantly swapping batteries will eventually lead to reliability issues, with wear on plugs/sockets, fittings etc. It's novel, but it's a solution to a problem most don't actually have. NIO are at the "we need to convince everyone they need this" stage..... And with solid state batteries literally not too far away - Ford and BMW are trialling solid state at the end of this year - then the probability of much increased range will render swapping pointless much of the time. NIO are basically aiming at moving goalposts.

Looks complicated and can see many scenarios of things going wrong. Regardless, to get the juice for a battery, you're still burning fossil fuels at the power plants. How much are you really saving? Already the electric demands are driving up electric rates for everyone, not just the EV folks. I notice that with the city tax, my electric rate in Cali is over 26 cents per KWH. I'm remembering 15 cents not too long ago.
