We look into the Buddha's teaching on Nirvana from the Udana, 1, 10:
“Where water and earth, fire, air cannot set foot;
There the stars do not emit light, the sun does not radiate forth;
There the moon does not shine, there darkness is not known.
When a brahmin, a sage, but his own sagacity
has known this for himself;
Then he is free from the form and formless realms, free from rebirth in any of those realms
is free from happiness and sorrow.”
‘‘Yattha āpo ca pathavī, tejo vāyo na gādhati;
Na tattha sukkā jotanti, ādicco nappakāsati;
Na tattha candimā bhāti, tamo tattha na vijjati.
‘‘Yadā ca attanāvedi, muni monena brāhmaṇo;
Atha rūpā arūpā ca, sukhadukkhā pamuccatī’’ti.
