Hi All, Just an update, if you're out of your warranty with Nissan, I'd recommend TOCO Warranty, I took out a policy with them for $55 /mo and they'll cover the transmission and other mechanical issues. I bought it at 111,480 miles and that was my price per month with no commitment. If you call them, mention Steve Torti (me) and we'll both be eligible for a discount, (818) 691-1270 ask for Daurie Bolwell. NISSAN SHOULD BE PAYING FOR THIS!! but it is what it is.

You're actually supposed to do a fluid flush (a very special kind that is temp controlled and specific type of fluid/system to flush and replace), at the dealership, every 60,000-90,000 miles. I had purchased mine used at 62k, but had later come to find the fluid flush which I read in the manual hadn't been done yet. I immediately noticed a much smoother ride and more responsiveness. Never seen such an overwhelming transmission problem than with these. Consumers think that it won't happen to them, so they keep buying these Altima/Versas. I heard a Sentra at 7 eleven today making an aweful trans noise and I wonder how long before that one shuts down as well. Sometimes you can get lucky changing the stepper motor on your trans Valve Body and refill with Nissan fluid. Stepper motor is $50-$75 and takes a mechanically inclined patient person to change it. Well, knock on wood of course, but I’ve had a 2011 Sentra with a CVT for a little over 2 years now, and apart from being sluggish in acceleration, it’s been probably the most reliable car I’ve had. Been on several 300+ mile trips with and daily work commutes, never an issue. Almost too reliable because I never have to open the hood and I haven’t been checking my fluids, which is definitely not good, but you get the point.

With cvt transmissions it is very important to change the fluid. Neglecting a Nissan cvt transmission will make the inevitable come far quicker. With that being said I’m happy to hear at least someone is happy with their Nissan cvt experience thus far.
@jasonquil2006

You’re right about them being sluggish in acceleration. I’ve driven a nissan murano, and I find myself having to hammer down on the pedal with a slight delay before any acceleration occurs, and you can really tell the CVT by the gear shifts; It just doesn’t sound right.
@bernlin2000
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the problem with CVT fluids is that unless you just take it in on a hunch, you might not know it's about to fail until the moment it happens. CVTs don't give off the same (or as many) "signs" of failing like a regular geared automatic does.
@bernlin2000
2 жыл бұрын
@@jasonquil2006 Yep, with my Versa putting the pedal to the floor was largely just for dramatic flair...it didn't make the car go any faster than a moderate press of the pedal, maybe even slower 😂. The mechanics of a CVT are very cool, but I think the tech is still kinda "meh". Geared transmissions are still better, it's just that CVTs are better fit for a "fuel conscious" world. But the don't perform as well and I think they feel much worse than a standard 5-speed. The car loses some important cues for knowing how your car is accelerating.

Nissan Uses Jatco
@Ghost-vr5zg
6 жыл бұрын
I know its been 6 months, but it has more to do with the design of the cvt. Instead of using a set of gears it uses 2 variable diameter pulleys that use oil pressure to get squeeze a cone like shape around a belt. Basically as the cone squeezes the effective gear gets smaller or bigger but because they use a steel belt made of 400ish tiny steel elements wrapped by ring packs, they can only handle a limited amount of hp. Lets say 300ish hp. The benefit of this design over traditional gears is that you can go though all your ratios "gears" continuously without stopping power to the drive train to shift into each gear, and can be infinitely variable, which means a lot of programing can be done here. Think 20 different transmission modes from ultra sleepy comfort to sport track race plus plus silver edition mode. The downside is the weakest link with the most stress is that complex steel belt, or as I call them, your main rubber band. Either way I feel like as we see this tech used more and more they will be able to handle more power but ill never convert to cvt! good for the masses maybe

Useful for overtaking and with more power the acceleration 80-120km/h makes a difference. The CVTs due to their nature are simply not build for this and the best acceleration is with around 40% of gas pedal. It is not a problem to find a fun to drive car (mazda mx-5 for example) but the problem is to find a more practical fun to drive car. I drove only 2 cars with CVTs and I did not like it.

It looks like it went into Safe/Limp mode for some reason. It does that to protect the CVT transmission. If you unplug the negative wire on the battery for about 20 minutes and the MAF sensor. It should allow you to drive it. I have heard that adding a Transmission cooler will stop your car from going into Safe/Limp mode. I have also heard of people having your same exact problem and then taking it to a dealer and being told the Transmission needs to be replaced. I have a 2012 Altima with more than 250,000 Km and it runs perfectly. Also have a 2008 Rogue with 150,000 km that needed CVT repair during the warranty period. Nissan fixed it free - put in a refurbished 2012 CVT as a replacement - it is a better design than the 2008 version. You have to drive a CVT more “gently” than a conventional transmission - and find a Nissan master mechanic who knows how to keep the engine and tranny tuned. I have driven Nissans since ‘81 with no major repairs - just regular maintenance and replacement of parts due to normal wear. Drive the car like you pay for your own gas and you might find it will last a long time.

Nissans are great vehicles but all CVT's are trash. Manufactures like Nissan put in a CVT because they are cheaper then a traditional automatic. If you have a CVT don't go over 3k, they don't like stress AT ALL, especially when the vehicle gets older and into higher mileage.
@foxtrot685

Garrett McKie this is not true at all. Subaru has a great lineartronic cvt that has a few models well over 100k with no problems. Mitsubishi's version of the jatco cvt works well with a less than 2% failure rate in the US. Hondas cvt is doing very well also with very few failures. Even Nissan has some models that do well with the cvt and others that are hit and miss with the cvt.
@garrettm7993

Darryl Henry there's a website you should look at called carcomplaints.com, pretty much every CVT has issues. My neighbor has a 2015 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum and had the transmission replaced already. I also have a friend with a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer and his CVT has been acting up for awhile and when he took it to the dealer he was told the transmission needed to be replaced. To be fair the car has over 150k on it but the fluid has been changed every 50k miles. I have driven a few vehicles with the CVT and had no issues but I've also driven a couple with issues. Regular automatics and Dual Clutch automated manuals have their faults too but their kinks have been polished out for the most part. CVT's on the other hand, not so much. I'm not saying your wrong, but a conventional automatic or a DCT transmission are better options in my opinion.

I've said what I needed to, my own experience with the flawed CVT design regardless of the manufacturer, customer complaints on the transmission, and expert reviews who don't like the transmission either. Sorry I can use facts to back up something as dumb as a bad transmission design. On the Subaru website, I remember reading that they described the manual transmission as something along the lines of “lightweight and dependable”. After seeing this video, I’m ecstatic to have a dependable manual transmission on my WRX. You wouldn’t think much of having a “dependable” transmission until you experience the failures of a CVT. CVT’s are so god awful compared to regular automatic transmissions. At least Mazda has stuck with PURE automatics.

If you turn your car on cold and brutal accelerate the transmission will soon cause the belts to slide best solution to warm the car right and I'm not talking about the temperature gauge I recommend changing the transmission oil and put Amsoil CVT Transmission fluid your car will last longer on transmission with no issues.

I RACED the shit out of that car up and down the interstate. Since I drove it hard, I made sure to change my CVT fluid every 30,000 miles instead of 60,000 and I put full synthetic oil in the engine in addition to premium fuel everytime. Unfortunately it met an untimely fate due to an idiot with a suspended license pulling out in front of my car with his Honda Accord. The car can fail, but the owner can be part of the blame as well.

Lucky for me i dont drive for long periods at a time and try to keep the weight load and hill climbing to a minimum. I changed my CVT fluid every 30k miles and my oil every 3750 miles. I would drive 200 miles round trip for work and raced the fuck out of my car. Most of these stories are user error. Just saying.

Brilliant. Freaking. Post. I hate that people expect to buy a car and not figure anything needs any maintenance ever, until there's a problem, at which point it's an automatic leap to "FUCK NISSAN I'M NEVER BUYING THEIR SHIT AGAIN AS LONG AS THEY HAVE CVT".

Vehicles should NOT need maintenance to this extent being still practically new, and clearly it is not a few people having this issue, it is MANY MANY people with THE EXACT SAME ISSUE. @@meaganrosemunoz7621First of all, watch the tone and language you have in your reply to me. I didn't attack your bank account nor did I force you to buy the vehicle so cut that shit. Secondly, there are laws and warranties in place for your protection. ANY CONSUMER, especially in today's age should be aware of the risk when purchasing any product. Cars are a guaranteed liability anyway so it's imperative that you take steps to make the most of that liability and you protect yourself. I'm aware you're frustrated, but most, if not all car companies, aren't building their cars to last anymore as its about market growth and share. I'm giving you my testimony in my experience of owning and having worked on my OWN 2 Nissan Altimas and getting them to well over 200k miles. So yes it sucks that you're having issues with your car, but I guarantee you, it's more than just Nissan. EVERY automaker is having some form of quality issue.

LOL boy I am a grown woman I will speak as I please.. x'D, I am just stating the obvious, you were blaming the consumer and how they treat a vehicle regardless, when it is very obviously a flaw within the company itself, and it is absolutely ridiculous that they refuse to take responsibility for an ongoing issue. We should not have to do extensive research for a new vehicle on whether or not it is reliable. ITS NEW.. it SHOULD be reliable. That is all I wanted to point out.. and trust me I know too, this is also my second Altima (previously had an '08, only problem was air compressor went out so I sold it to my dad and upgraded, he fixed the minimal issue and is practically like new lol), and my sister in law has the same make and model as I currently do, and she rags that thing and has twice the miles that I do, and yet I have more issues than she does (Not fair lol) I am not trying to be snippy with you, and you are right, it is obviously a marketing thing, and people eat it up. It is ridiculous without a doubt. Also not gonna lie, the new body style is so sleek!

@@meaganrosemunoz7621 And I'm a grown man. 🤣🤣 No but for real, I understand. You shouldn't have to worry about new cars being crap on you, but even Honda is having this issue with the gasoline seeping into the engine bay diluting the oil. Hyundai/Kia is having problems with their cars spontaneously combusting and Toyota, they're okay, but I'll never forget how they had the spontaneous acceleration of their cars and blackballed a private investigator who found the problem and destroyed her life because she became the whistleblower of the ongoing decade investigation. But hopefully Nissan will get their shit together because their transmissions are or can be shit, but I'm like you, I love the way they look.

Basically the transmission won't shift correctly causing the car to not accelerate or causing it to shutter/stall. Nissan's CVT's are garbage. the transmission breaks in a ton of 2013 altima's. Wouldn't be surprised to see 2014-16 models having these issues in the near future as well. Nissan dealerships won't fix it unless you're under warranty. It cost $3-5k to replace it. Just be careful when you drive and if this type of issue occurs expect a heavy fee to fix it or trade for a new car asap.

Mr. Will The Nissan dealerships are super sketchy because they know this is a major issue with the 2013 altima's. They know it'll cost a lot of money to fix so they're avoiding the problem at all costs. Your car should be under warranty for 60k miles unless you purchased an extended warranty when you bought the car. Otherwise you're pretty much out of luck. Nissan will say it is a computer issue but when you take it into the shop they will update the system but nothing will change. My friend who is a mechanic gave me two options. Pay $3-5k to replace the trans with the exact same CVT and risk it breaking again or trade in my car and get something else. I chose the latter. Anyways, there are no codes that show up at other car shops to say their is a transmission problem which is why a lot of mechanic shops can't specifically identify the problem when trying to run a diagnostic. It's a huge problem for many drivers. You can google "2013 Nissan Altima problems" and you will see a ton of issues people are having with their transmissions. Hope this helps anyone with the issue.

Your dealership is lying to you, Your suppose to change the CVT fluid every 30k miles per owners maintenance guide. There is also no "Special tool" required to replace this fluid, however it is highly recommend that you use Genuine Nissan CVT fluid. Use any other fluid than Genuine Nissan and you will void your warranty. I'm not sure why the dealer you went to was refusing to change the fluid, I would get it done at a another dealership.
@foxtrot685

ShockinglyBleh indeed. you can even hear the CVT unit whining. that means it is overheated. it is overheated because that old fluid can't cool the CVT off anymore, it's cooling propertirs have been burned off. also the fluid has friction material in it that keeps the metal belt from slipping on the pulleys. once the fluid is toast, so is the friction material so it's only a matter of time before the belt slips on the pulleys if it hasn't already. that is instant non-repairable damage. go find a better Nissan dealer if you haven't already.

Nissan is finally getting what it deserves. They are now forced to cut their sales by 20%. Yay! Ever since the cancer known as Renault came into the picture, Nissan has been selling problem, unreliable cars plagued with French gremlins. Some gremlins became known immediately ( think 2013+ altimas, rogue’s pathfinders, Infiniti j35’s, sentra’s) and others began to hatch with time (2003+ Murano’ s Altima’s, maxima’s, Rogue’s, Frontier’s , Pathfinders, Quests) . From cvt lawsuits to radiator/transmission lawsuits to timing chain lawsuits, to oil consumption, to catalytic converters, to head haskets, to blown engines, to bad electricals, nothing about Nissan represented the reliability people once associated with this Japanese name. Let this stand as a lesson for any other reliable brand that tries to hide unreliable JUNK behind a once reliable name. RENAULT=NISSAN AND NOW MITSUBISHI=JUNK! Avoid at all cost! And when RENAULT-Nissan says they are going back to focusing on making “profitable” cars as oppose to large fleet sales, just remember, they’re talking about their pockets, not yours. This same stunt is what they said when Renault first came in to the picture. It’s more of the same-ole, same-ole. Turd cars wrapped in nice shells with cheap/unreliable components taken from the lowest bidder. Dont forget, when Renault first came into the picture, they specifically said “NISSAN NEEDS TO BE CAUTIONS OF OVER QUALITY. DOES IT MATTER IF THE CAR LASTS 6-7 YEARS? NO BECAUSE THEY’LL LIKELY BE GETTIN A NEW ONE ANYWAYS”. (search google for the exact quote). This is what they proved to mean by “profitable” cars. If you buy a Nissan, you’re not their customer, you’re their sucker. BUY TOYOTA/LEXUS instead!!

I still haven't heard of Toyota having any issues with their hybrids anyway, but whatever the case may be, Nissan doesn't hold a resale anymore in comparison to Toyota. A 2013 Avalon base model with 72,000 miles on it was just sold for 22k A 2016 fully loaded Maxima with 35,000 miles was just sold for 17k. That's sad.
