Do you need to place a jack under the engine at any point when removing those bolts on the top mount. I already see you answered the question I had about not needing to remove the spark plugs. Other questions I have should I disconnect battery, does the oil need to be drained.? I'm working on an 02 to 08 engine 1.2 Its got a slight oil leak and I'm trying to locate the problem and since I'm seeing some at the top on back and some at front this seems to be a good place to start. Since it's higher than the filter. Thanks Sparky.

Hi there I enjoy all your content. Great videos, all very well shown and explained 👍. Just a quick question, how long do you need to leave the ‘liquid’ gasket/sealer to cure before the engine can be used? I’ve seen differing answers ranging from 1 hour to 24 hours, so in your experience how long would you wait before starting the car? Many thanks 👌
@maxautouk

Depends on the sealant, I always go by what the manufacturer says most of the time you leave it for at least an hour or so until it skins over slightly then you fit it The longer you can wait before starting the engine to let it cure the better really... My biggest piece of advice is less is more, a little Sealant goes a long way and I've seen countless leaks because of too much sealer

@@maxautouk thank you for your reply. The sealer I’ve been recommended to use claims to “make a leak proof gasket in seconds”, it’s the V-tech Vital Red RTV on ECP. I’ve done quite a few rocker cover gaskets where there may be a dab of sealer required in places to supplement a rubber gasket and found a couple of hours to be sufficient but I was just wondering what you did on this particular job where the whole gasket was a liquid type. Thanks again, look forward to seeing some more of your content. Top man 👍

Thanks for the reply sorry for my slow response KZitem only just started notifying me of replies to my replies - I usually wait as long as possible, overnight if I can. But if the customer wants or needs the car back asap we have let them go after just half an hour and they have all been ok so far

@maxautouk no problem I appreciate you replying to me. That’s what I did, the customer wanted to take the car ASAP but I made them wait for 3 hours before I let them take it. It’s been great so far no leaks, it appears to have sealed perfectly. One thing I found that slowed the job down a bit was when I removed the rocker cover I discovered the factory sealer on there, looking a bit past it’s best, but on top of it appeared another bead of a different coloured sealer. It looked like it had been off before but instead of cleaning the mating surfaces off they had just put the new sealer on top of the old sealer, hence why in the first place I think there was a quite severe oil leak all around the rocker cover and not just a small weeping of oil in a few places. So after me spending the time cleaning off both surfaces of the old sealer before using my own beading of sealer the car has been perfect ever since. Anyway thank you very much for your advice and help, it was amazing and it really helped me out. Good luck in the future. I look forward to seeing more content 👌👌👍👍Chris

Good video. Whilst you had the cover off why not tell us how to check that the timing chain tension is OK. Just a thought as my main interest is whether my chain is too loose.
@maxautouk
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, you can't really tell if it's right enough or not from there for a few reasons. You have to check the tension at the longest section of chain between pulleys which you can't do at the cams and the tensioner works off oil pressure so the chain will always be slightly slack when the engine isnt running or doesn't have oil pressure and lastly you need an electronic gauge to check it properly which you need the entire cover off to do which on the k12 involves removing the entire engine - that said when a chain slack enough start causing issues or jumping teeth you can hear it clattering badly when the engine first starts and when it revs mainly

Hey seems like you did not remove first the negative terminal of your battery before removing the sensors like MAF, TPS etc. This is to avoid check engine light to come out after you bring back everything. And you also forgot to cover the intake manifold by a clean cloth to avoid falling of screws inside the intake manifold..

If there is a deep groove then you can use the rubber gasket but on this instance where the groove is so shallow you need to use sealant.

@@kooppis if it comes with a rubber style gasket I would use that when refitting, if it comes with sealant I would refit it with sealant. As far as I know all of the Cr12de engines have the valve cover fitted with sealant. There may be other variants I haven't worked on. The first time I did this job I ordered the rubber gasket then I realised when I took it off there was now at the rubber gasket would fit so I used sealant instead after I cleaned off the old sealant. @@maxautouk Do you know if there will be any difference between the CR12DE and the CG12DE ? I was just in my closeby car parts shop for a few bits and bobs and asked about the gasket - he said it's a rubber one with the 4 O rings included. I think I'll have to check it with the VIN to take what I need before pulling everything apart.
