it has finally arrived! I think I pre-ordered this around April 2023 and it is now mid-June 2023.. so, about 2 months wait. First unboxing impressions are it feels substantial in hands.
I have been wanting an AP Royal Oak style watch for a while. hell, I would really love a blue dial AP RO, period. But, that simply isn't and won't be in the stars of destiny for me. There have been many microbrands and even Seiko mods that come very close to looking like a 1:1 of the AP RO. But, I didn't want to go on such a replica in design. The CasiOak isn't my thing, either.
Since Nivada Grenchen is a revived brand and the F77 is a rather rare model within their oast catalog, it's RO inspired design met my criteria and felt right for me to go with and purchase.
They did a great job at bringing back such a cool model. There are a number of subtle improvements and changes from it's vintage model origins. To name a few off the top of my head, this new reissue actually went 1mm smaller than the vintage model from 38mm to now 37mm case size.
They've also very subtlety smoothed out the form of the F77. It's a trade less straight and hard edged like a RO and has a little softer lines and curves added. If you were to compare the vintage F77 to the reissue side by side, you see the slight difference in the bezel geometry.
And, if you opted for the date version like I did, it differs from the vintage as it used to have a day and date complication. I don't need a day and prefer a simplified use of just the date. And, for me, such an integrated bracelet sport watch design just feels a little more proper with a date window even though the no-date version will retain more dial symmetry.
I was curious if it may retain too much vintage qualities and feel a bit too light and/or rattly. it is not.
Also, I've only seen some social media photos and videos of the pre-production models that have been passed around and they seemed a little beat up.. which made it hard to gauge how the final production version's finishing will be like. so far, I am not disappointed from what I can tell upon the unboxing.
Between the two immediate dial colors at the time, I knew I wanted the blue. But, I was not 100% certain for the tone of blue would be right or too bright? Finally having this watch I hands and in the metal, I think overall the blue is a nice tone. it can appear to be bright and pop, but, I don't think overly so. It's not quite as dark or deep as maybe what I have seen from an AP Royal Oak or Vacheron Constantin Overseas. But, I think it's it's own unique shade of blue. And, with the textured woven dial the F77 has been known for, it additionally caries it's own design cues.
