This is pretty similar to the No Menu Challenge fight, but I wanted to record a version with more "classic" rules as well, the rules being:
-No Materia (NM)
-No Limit Breaks (NLB)
-Initial Equipment (IE)
-No Accessories (NA)
As far as I can tell no one has fought Emerald with these rules before, so I thought it would be interesting to try. The differences from the No Menu version are as follows:
Harder:
-No Coin
Easier:
-Can start the battle in back row
-Can change battle speed and ATB mode
-Can easily set up 7777 on all three characters
-Can sort my items
All of this means that the battle is significantly harder in this version. The lack of Coin far outweighs all the small things that make it a bit easier. The main reason why no Coin makes it so much harder is that it takes much longer to kill the three eyes I need to kill (the fourth is left alive to keep Emerald in stage 2), and the end of the fight when T/S Bombs start doing less damage also takes longer.
This meant I had to make up for the lost time somewhere. I turned the battle speed all the way up and changed ATB mode to Active. I also farmed two more Stardusts for a total of eight. I got to use seven of them plus three T/S Bombs before the Foot Stamp (compared to six Stardusts and no T/S Bombs last time). Having three characters with 7777 HP made it a bit more likely to get a lucky opening this time since it didn't matter which character he used the first Emerald Shoot on, but just the fact that he used Emerald Shoot five times in a row before using Foot Stamp is quite lucky (1/81 chance if I've done the math correctly), and on top of that the first two were on the same character and he never used it on Cid. I don't think I could've asked for a luckier opening than this.
I also realized that there was no point in healing after the Foot Stamp or after the following Emerald Shoot, since he will always use Emerald Beam (percent-based damage) after that last Emerald Shoot, and I also didn't need to spend time moving characters to the back row this time, so I got more damage in during those two rounds as well.
Unlike Emerald himself, the eyes take full Gravity damage, so each T/S Bomb (except the first one, since the damage is capped at 9999) will halve their HP. The eyes are weak to Fire, so I finished them off with a Fire Veil. I could have reduced the HP of all three eyes and then finished them all off with a single Fire Veil, but it's faster to kill them off one by one since it reduces the number of lasers from the eyes each round, and it's also risky to keep the two damage-dealing eyes alive longer than necessary. An Emerald Beam followed by two "HP lasers" on the same character would have killed that character and I would lose too much time recovering from that.
Once the eyes are dead, the fight becomes identical to the No Menu Challenge fight until it's time to deliver the finishing blows. Emerald Weapon is weak to Lightning, so when the T/S Bombs started doing very little damage, I first used my Dragon Fang before switching to Swift Bolts. In the end I finished this one 11 seconds faster than the No Menu version of the fight.
