Learn Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in easy way. NMR is a special tool that plays a key role in structural elucidation of many organic and pharmaceutical compounds.
In organic chemistry, NMR spectra can be used to identify a structure for which spectral interpretation is essential. By observing the number of NMR signals, one can approximately estimate the types of nuclei present in the structure. In case of 1H-NMR, the number of different types of protons attached in different way to parent chain can be detected by studying NMR signals.
All nuclei can not give NMR signal but nuclei with spin quantum number I = 1/2 can only win this game. Nuclei like proton (1H), 13-carbon (13C), fluorine (19F) and few other nuclei can give NMR signals.
Electrons surrounding a nuclei can oppose the magnetic field applied externally thereby they reduce NMR signal. This effect is knows as shielding effect. But the effect of these electrons highly depends on the connectivity and orientation of the groups in the molecule.
In this spectroscopy, the effect of neighboring groups on the nuclei is also studied. Few of the groups increase the electron density surrounding the nuclei under study thereby they produce an upfield effect. These groups shift the NMR signals to right side leading to decrease in the chemical shift.
