This video aims to demonstrate how the neurologic music therapy technique Therapeutic Instrumental Music Performance (TIMP) can be used to improve movement goals with patients/clients with ataxia. Ataxia is the impaired/loss of coordination of the voluntary muscles, which often is the result of a traumatic brain injury or a stroke. The inability to coordinate their arms and/or legs leads to issues with mobility, balance, and ambulation.
TIMP is a useful technique to use with patients/clients with ataxia because it 1) provides a target for the movement, 2) helps establish a motor loop for the behavior to be coordinated, and 3) helps entrain and retrain movements to become voluntary. Related fields who work with patients/clients with ataxia can use these factors to help in providing treatment to their patients using music or related mediums for therapy.
Musical factors that must be considered in applying TIMP would be the tempo and instrument choice for the movement. A steady, slow tempo will allow the patient/client time to plan and coordinate the movement. In cases with extreme ataxia, having an additional therapist such as a physical therapist or occupational therapist can help in facilitating the movement hand-over-hand.
