This video aims to demonstrate how the neurologic music therapy technique Patterned Sensory Enhancement can be used to improve movement goals with patients/clients with deficits in their balance/range of motion/strength/endurance. Patients/clients with deficits in these often struggle to move around safely and effectively for both short or long periods of time in their homes and outside environments.
Like TIMP, PSE is a useful technique to use with patients/clients with these deficits because it allows them to improve in them. However, PSE does not involve them to play instruments to practice these movements. This technique allows them to 1) practice movements resembling activities of daily living with musical cues for coordination and timing, 2) slow down and speed up movements to focus on safety and efficiency, and 3) provide cues not only for timing, but spatial cues for the direction of the movement. Related fields who work with patients/clients with balance/range of motion/strength/endurance can use these factors to help in providing treatment to their patients using music or related mediums for therapy.
Musical factors that must be considered in applying PSE would be the tempo and harmony for coordinating the movements. The meter and tempo as well as harmony and pitch all work to cue the force/emphasis of the movement. In more challenging balance or other movement tasks, another person is needed to assist their safety and mobility. As demonstrated in the video, to increase those with higher-functioning balance and ADLs, the movements can shift to TIMP to add extra movements and an extra challenge to them.
