Former neighbours of mine bought one of these brand new in the early 2000s. It was a blue one, I think a 1.4 LX. They traded in an early Ford Fiesta mark 3 for it They were so proud of it that they invited my parents and I to have a closer look. I remember how incredibly comfortable the driver's seat was. It had velour upholstery like this GLX. Sadly, a few years later the husband passed away and the wife traded it in for a 107 or maybe a 108. 🤔
@lloydvehicleconsulting
Жыл бұрын
Yes sir, the 107 would have seemed a lot more basic compared with this. The GLX does have some quite nice seats in it. Sounds like those neighbours kept cars for quite a long time!

Definitely consider a Peugeot 206 because the driving experience is not that much different to the 205, it comes with standard power steering and it is not really that much smaller than a 306. My Wife and I fell in love with its looks when it was released and we drove it and tried to buy one but unfortunately excess demand made the new 206 expensive and the Dealers were doing no deals so we managed to buy a brand new Citroën Xsara with a more powerful engine, more luxurious trim and far more practicality for bearly £1000 more than the 206.

These don't remind me of the 205 to drive at all, actually (I have tried two of them). The 106 and Saxo feel far more like a 205. They were very popular back in the day, and many were built in Coventry. Without discounts, however, a car like this would have been rather unappealing, and I would probably choose a Xsara over a 206, as you did back in the day.

A year and a half (on May 2022), I have bought myself a 2004 year built 206 with Zest 3 trim package and with less than exact 243k kms on the clock. It has 1.4 HDi eco 70 engine, which is actually built by Ford from 2002 until 2014. My 206 was sadly not well cared of until I bought it. Had to finish with body repair, buy new set of tires and lots of parts to fix or replace. Now, it looks like brand new, it never disappointed me. I don't think that I would ever sell it.

My mate owns and drives one of these, that one is a fairly early example on a Y plate, I believe they first came out on an S reg? My mates is a 52 plate and an LX like this one, they do drive nice, and pretty well equipped. I think the 205 had more character. The rear swingarm bushes are often what kills these off as it’s an expensive job as they often seize in and so often requiring removal of the trailing arms and replacing with reconditioned units. I had a SAXO 1.1 and head gasket did start to fail in that so it was quickly got rid of, it often starts with oil leaks in the corners of the cylinder head but as you mentioned not as common an occurence as the Rover K series.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

That is absolutely right, they came out in 1998 on an S registration. That sounds right about rear bushes, there are a few common problems with these. The TU engines tend to be a bit less prone to head gasket failure than the K-Series, as you say, but it does happen, of course.

I don't think we had the 1.1s in New Zealand. Usually we received the larger engined models. Like the 205 of old I think that the success of the wild rally specials helped 206 sales!

Hello Sir , I remember having a test drive in one about 12yrs ago and found the pedals to close together for me at the time and I didnt like it , now about five years ago my dad bought one , a 1.4 52reg low miles last owner was over 15 years . He paid about £700 with 12 months MOT , I really liked it , it drove so well , the TU engine was very good never any issues and I changed my mind about em . It had carpet on the glove box like that one .
@lloydvehicleconsulting

The pedals were OK in this one, the 106 and Saxo were far worse in this respect. You can pick these up for surprisingly little money in reasonable condition, actually, probably because they were massive sellers back in the day. The TU engines can blow head gaskets, but it's not necessarily inevitable, and they are better than the Prince engines....

Surprisingly enough, those wipers are to RHD spec. LHD don't have the double hinge design box like the RHD cars have. It's not a full conversion, but I believe its designed to give more stroke to the arm, for a clearer screen to LHD market cars.

An excellent review as always Sir, peak Peugeot alongside with the 306 and has been mentioned went a bit wrong with the 07 range of numbers with the exception of the 107. I think nowadays even the 208 is like a sprititual sucessor to the 205.

Yes, sir, the 207 is not very good. Not very good at all... The 206 isn't the best Peugeot I have ever driven (I much prefer a nice V6 406), but they aren't bad, and I do understand why they were so popular at the time.

I had a 2002 forbidden fruit. The front passenger seat tips forward for a secret compartment. The wiper pushes across and up so coverage not as issue. The 2002 version had a small facelift - different steering wheel, sound control pod on steering wheel and different velour cloth. Also was a saloon version in some markets - horrible. Other random facts - back fog light is mounted on springs. Plastic grain was modelled on an elephants ass. The early base L had lower black bumpers - tragic looking. Naturally you’d have a Rolland Garros Sir!

They did the same thing with the wipers with RHD mk2 Renault Clios. Was it cheaper to do this with the complicated linkage that pushed the drivers side wiper further out. I ran a 2003 Clio Dynamique and found the wiper pattern not too bad but left an annoying little unswept patch of screen in the top right hand side corner

Yes, they haven't got the best driving position I have ever experienced, but the 106 is much worse... Exhausts and rear suspension seem to be quite common issues on these, don't they? I have had plenty of Focuses on No Budget, and they are a bit better, but then they were more expensive.
