Look at the Q & A of the Rotella link - it says that the amount of sulfur in this oil will clog "modern" catalytic converters used for gasoline engines, and that T6 its is for diesel engine use only (or gasoline engines with out a modern cat converter).

Don't you have a cruch ring or copper washer for that oil plug? My Tracer with the same CP3 engine calls for a new crush ring for each oil replacement.

I like how easy it is to change the oil on the fz. But the first time I changed it I needed channel locks to take the filter off because yamaha sure cranked that thing on. Did I read that right though, you're using oil intended for a diesel engine?

I ran Rotella T6 5w40 in my y2k VTR1000F Superhawk for 70,000 miles. It was always happy with it.

You can stab the filter with a big screwdriver and that used to turn it lose. Pick the angle in first. This is if your stuck.

@@JuiceBanger1 this works but be very careful. I've seen someone go right through the filter and puncture the oil cooler. I used to do it this way on my 01 ZX-6R before I had fancy tools.

My drain plug is on the bottom. No way was that 2.85 qts that came out unless the footage was speed up. Also place some oil in the filter so that its primed before running the engine.

@@blurglide it makes no difference. It takes 2 seconds for the filter to fill. That whole time oil is already coated pretty much every part in the engine. The engine is never “dry” unless you tear it apart and spray it with brake cleaner.

Yes, there should. A crumple gasket specifically sold by Yamaha. Do not do this without it.

@@bernardomotard : the crush washer does not have to be switched out every oil change. It's there for the simple reason not to overtighten the bolt. That's all it does. Once it is crushed it can easily be used again. No worries.

PistnRods the fairings of course. There's a couple of screws and nuts and that's only to make it loose so it's still difficult and requires some shimmying

Makes my CBR250R oil change look like brain surgery. Oil drains directly onto the midpipe and has a spring loaded oil filter case that is a massive pain in the the dick to get on. Summer cant come quick enough, getting that 2017 FZ-09 soon.

Most dealers go off of retail, unless your sales guy is a greedy dick that ups the price. If anything, complain to Yamaha about part prices. Service rates just depend what store you go to.

Running non-moto oil in a motorcycle with a wet sump will ruin the engine and transmission. Use something like Motul, or any oil that's designated for motorcycles.
