Thank you! I do think this is probably as specific as I'll get regarding the numbers, and since I believe my symphony salary is relatively public knowledge - everyone at my job has access to everyone else's income level because it's in our collective agreement - I don't see a practical downside in sharing at this time. (But of course I could be wrong about this!) For jobs that are more variable in salary, negotiable, or have merit-based bonuses etc. I can definitely see how it could be a big problem to share...

I started tracking my expenses about six months ago and it was really eye opening. I now try to only spend about 4k a year on guilt free spending. It’s a little higher than yours but I also don’t have any kids lol so I splurge a bit more on skincare, haircare, clothes, and random plushies. I’m healing my inner child by buying some cutesy stuff that I always wanted as a kid 😂 Miniso gets me everytime! I also don’t really travel anymore and have downsized my apartment to reduce my expenses. I’m with you on not wanting to spend it all though, it’s tough, but I’m working on it.

Oh yes totally feel the "healing of the inner child". Miniso is such a cute brand! Actually reminds me of the decor in my kids' bedroom now, they've got a kind of strawberry and Corgi puppy "kawaii" theme going on, which was extra fun to put together since I never got to have a cute bedroom when I was a kid. I also hope the theme will grow with them since it's not specifically "only for children"!

I think you should consider your husband’s income in your personal spending allowance esp because you are a full time stay at home mom! A lot of your labor isn’t being compensated so just applying these percentages to your income skews things a bit. The financial diet youtube channel has great videos on how to keep this equitable in relationships with respect to finances and domestic work. You can then decide what amount from your personal spending allowance you want to limit to spending on shopping for yourself and base your no buy around that. The leftover could be for Christmas, experiences, more investing etc. Just my two cents :)

I like this point! And I also enjoy the financial diet. We do actually combine finances, but there are a few reasons I did not include his income in my guilt free category. In my journey to manage my shopping, the number I get from 10% of my income feels like a reasonable target for my immediate goals because it's more about being happy with less consumerism than it is about the money. Also, because of the nature of our spending categories, it also kind of makes sense for him to have a larger "fun" budget. His idea of fun includes things like DIY car and lawn maintenance, and those things can be more expensive but also have a practical purpose (doing work on an older car can save $ rather than buying new, etc.) Whereas the epitome of my fun spending is something like a $200 sweater, that while cheaper, only serves my own interests and isn't strictly a "need", and I want to cut down on non-essentials on principle. It might all shake down in a similar way regardless because more of his income will go towards vacations and etc. since his "savings" category is also higher - and since we're combined, there isn't really separate "savings" beyond retirement accounts. Hopefully that all makes sense! It's skewed, but for a specific goal this year with reevaluation as necessary 😅

I love seeing other people's budget breakdowns. I always think it's better for people to be thinking about their finances than not. (I did write a very long tangent about governments worldwide doing more to support and fund arts and culture, but it ended up as a rant more than anything. I genuinely believe there should be far more monetary support for people who are ensuring that our cultural memories, artefacts, techniques, skills, etc. are kept alive and remembered and created and renewed.) My 'wants' budget sits around 20% of my after tax income. I must add that I typically don't spend this amount (closer to 2-7%) and I periodically consider it 'untouchable' if I don't use it (i.e. it doesn't just keep accumulating as fun money). The figure was originally set up to accommodate for larger one-off purchases (e.g. something indulgent like an superfluous antique coffee table) rather than a figure that represents how much I actually regularly spend of my after tax income. Your figure of 10% of your salary doesn't seem high to me, simply because the cost of items that fall into 'wants' doesn't change regardless of how much you earn. As long as you have essentials covered, I'm very much of the mind that life is there to be enjoyed.

Love to read your comments! Even this budget breakdown is in a bit of flux as we're feeling more pressure to get an emergency fund built up...just seems to be getting harder as unforeseen expenses just seem to keep on popping up (my dental work that I vlogged about later being one of them 😬 and then some car parts!) ...eventually I'll probably update on how no-buy is impacting my finances a few more months in but long story short is I don't actually feel like I have any more money than I did before 😅

I am happy to share some of my expenses compared to my gross individual income. Clothing (includes accessories and jewelry) = 1.7%. Gifts = 0.6%. Hair salon visits = 0.4%. Makeup = 0.2%. I love hearing about your no buy year because I spent almost my entire clothing budget in the spring and want to save the rest for Black Friday deals. Thank you for the inspiration!

Any mother who also works has her plate full! So many hats! ( not wardrobe hats! ) If funds are tight than that's how things are. But if money is ok then it is not a sin to enjoy life. Moderation should also effect doing without! We only get the one life after all!

The plan for next week is a kind of summary of my life as it relates to shopping (possible triggers from childhood), and jobs and money (how I've funded the shopping and also how I spend a lot of my time) - if there are any lingering curiosities after that video, perhaps a more specific "q&a" session will be in the future of this channel 😄

This was so interesting and I love learning about your life and career in music. My situation is atypical as I haven't worked outside of the home since 1997. My wonderful husband was a patent attorney and his income supported our family of four. He passed away in his 40s which was an absolute shock and tragedy beyond description but he was a planner. Im not sure if it was his legal training or his personality but he always thought of worst case scenario. Thank heavens because I could have never come close to replacing his income.

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear your husband passed away so young! I have no idea what I'd do in that situation (I also couldn't replace my husband's income) and I'm sure that living through that has colored your life in so many ways.

$2500 sounds like a fair amount. I wouldn’t include all gifts in that since you and hubby are both Santa. I might create a Christmas/birthday Savings Account for that. Also… please consider college funds for the kids. I’m flabbergasted by the bills our 2 have in college right now. Maybe on the pie charts you and hubby can allocate percentages to that as well. 🥰If they choose another type of career path or education, it will be a great start for them. (Trade school, college, etc)

Yes! We are looking to move away from physical gifts and maybe use holidays as a way to hype up vacations later in the year. College fund is part of our savings category - I didn't get too specific in this video but we are working on it 👍

I think theoretically, that's more than enough money. However, having tracked my impulsive shopping for ever a year, it's not even close to enough (I'm working on it!!) I think you and your husband should have equal free money. You said he makes more, so his 10% would be more...and that seems unfair considering you do the "momming"...which is hard work! Maybe you guys have already discussed this though! Just something to think about.
@Alexas.nobuyyear

Totally understand this viewpoint! But at least for now there are a few reasons why I'm ok with unequal "fun" money - firstly I really want to work on my own consumerism habits and getting my own spending down, whereas it's not such a problem for him, and secondly the things he buys for "fun" usually happen to be a kind of household expense, like lawnmowers and car parts (either for a classic car or the 1995 van we drive as our family car, so this is sometimes a cross between "necessary" and "fun" if its repairing or improving one of the regular vehicles). So if his free money goes towards a nicer lawnmower to help him do that aspect of our "housework" I'm ok with him having more $$ for that, whereas my budget is more than sufficient for a handful of fancy sweaters or whatever it is that I tend to buy! I know it may also be a sign that we need to rework our "categories"... but we've only just started thinking in percentages at all, so we will adjust as necessary if we need to!

My shopping budget is ~$200 a month and that budget includes beauty, clothing, and the infrequent purchase of home decor, but not sports, hobbies, travel, entertaining, gifts, and eating out. The total of "wants" which include all those things is 19% of our take-home income YTD (after health costs and retirement). I budget myself for my own shopping but other categories have more flexibility because I feel confident in our retirement and savings goals being met and it's not "mindless consumption" in the way shopping can be. Last year I spent closer to $400 a month with a few vintage, luxury bag and shoe purchases as well as maternity clothing but have felt very content with my closet this year.
@Alexas.nobuyyear

That's amazing that you have confidence in retirement and savings, and also that you're at a place of wardrobe contentment! Maternity clothes and also adapting for a new life with kids can be a pitfall for wardrobes, or just general size fluctuations, but I think I'm finally starting to get a handle on my wardrobe and clothes-buying habits. Next step over here is to prioritize our savings and retirement and reach that place of confidence too!

I’ve been thinking about discretionary money especially as it relates to my toxic trait, clothes shopping 😂. I want to get down to spending about 200-400/yr. I feel like that’s fair considering I’ve been spending somewhere north of 2k over the last year 🙈🙈 We are also debt free but I want to throw more towards retirement. I’d love to retire early! I think your personal spending budget seems fair.

I'm coming to realize that actual numbers goals aren't proving to be that helpful, at least this year where there's already the overall goal of "not buying"...we're still in the struggle of building an emergency fund amidst seemingly endless expensive things "coming up" (dental work, car repairs, etc!) 🫣

To me budgeting the "guilt free money" is hard. Because when you look at the number as a total it feels like an insane amount to be spending frivolously.. but then spending it bit by bit throughout the year feels normal😂😅 thanks for sharing your numbers I think you're doing great and being really mindful
@Alexas.nobuyyear
5 ай бұрын
Right?! A "reasonable" weekly amount really adds up. But it's kind of helping me to see where I stand as far as my values vs. the actual numbers. Like in my mind I feel like I want to spend even less than my numbers on "guilt-free spending" over a year because I don't think I "need" to buy so much, and I want to cut down on shopping for reasons other than money (clutter, resources, time spent browsing, etc). But I guess that's the idea of it being "guilt-free" 🙃 just one piece of the puzzle of consumerism for me!
