Alexa, as always your videos make me think. You are incredibly grounded and have such a gift for communicating. I really appreciate your content and how thoughtful you are.

Haha thank you but just fair warning, I have not accumulated as much makeup/skincare as I have clothing, so it might not be super exciting material 😅

I moved countries shortly after a MASSIVE (half size) declutter and it was still not enough to only have actively used pieces. Lends credence to the idea that you wear only a fifth of your wardrobe consistently.

Nothing like moving countries to force you into evaluate what's the most valuable to keep! It's been a little while since I moved now so I really want to be careful of accumulating more.

I have about the same number of items as you, except I have a much smaller house and no walk-in closet, so I have crates of wardrobe overflow all over the bedroom 😣 it's not great! But also like you, I don't want to get rid of things arbitrarily, I want them to wear out organically so that I'm not being wasteful - so it's all the more important for me not to keep bringing new things in!

We will figure this out! I also think in our cases it will become more clear after the season of pregnancy/nursing are no longer "wardrobe considerations"...I know I'm still hanging onto things "just in case" or also don't wear a lot of my favorite stuff because it's incompatible with keeping a baby fed...so, we will get there 🥰 but just like you said, the easiest first step is to stop the flow of new things in!

Really appreciating the idea of slow decluttering. I always felt a panic like I have to get to a certain number or suffocating in stuff but then I make a decluttering regret or mistake. Uggh. Anyway thanks for bringing this concept to my attention!

Great decluttering! I like to think of it as refining-sometimes the term decluttering has connotations with it. I don’t think capsule wardrobes are for everyone honestly. Your schedule is very fluid and being able to mix and match across areas depending on tasks is important.
@Alexas.nobuyyear

You might be right about a capsule just not being for me or others with very fluid schedules. I think the current focus is just to, as you say, refine a bit more and perhaps benefit from the same things as a "capsule" without actually defining it so much.

I really appreciate the honesty of these videos which I’m binging atm. You articulate exactly how hard it is to avoid consumer spending. Somehow we all have to get far more aware of what we truly want and need without it being warped all the time by our hungry ghosts.

I am trying to not be influenced by others and to only buy things that can be worn in more than one way. Like you are saying you only wear them so often per week.

I moved 2 times the last 6 months and that made me declutter so much. If anyone ever feels like they lack clothes (or anything else for that matter) I recommend moving it😂 Ohhhhhhhh boy it was a lot and very confrontational even though I have been on an ongoing No-buy/low-buy for the last 3 years. Now I buy things that I will do my best to wear out. Also I think about what I leave behind when I exit this plane of existence and I dont want people to clean up a bunch of mess😅

Same - even though I HAVE moved I somehow still have way too much! I'm feeling that again as I'm about to film some "style reflections" videos - looking once again at my clothes and wondering how I ever thought I would be able to wear so much.

thats funny I just saw that same video about consumerist very good !! OMG love your comment about if you have enough clothes for 2 weeks to wear without repetition is only 26 wears a year !! eye opening for me I just did a big declutter and was trying to mindfully bring about 14 days of clothing with out repetition but hearing how little ill be using my clothes, maybe ill rethink that thank you !!!
@Alexas.nobuyyear

Yeah the video really made me think! I'm sure I'll even have more to say about it as my thoughts develop. And yeah thinking about how many wears is crazy to me too - I'm not sure I will personally be able to go down to 14 days of clothing in total but I guess I might eventually apply that to seasonal capsules...so with 14 tops and 14 bottoms that would be 28 pieces in each capsule. If we say there are 4 seasons that's a total of 112 pieces of clothing over the whole year. And according to my clothing app I have over 200! So maybe 112 is a more realistic target for me to get down to in the nearer future...but then, if we do the "how many wears" math on 112 pieces, that's wearing everything only 6.5 times per year. Which feels way too low! Makes me wonder why on earth I have so much clothing. 😳

I think it seems that you have fun trying one or two outfits before choosing one? Dressing can be an art! Why not! I think your style might be a bit French? Artistic and chic but playful!
@Alexas.nobuyyear

Sometimes I do for sure! Other times I'm trying to get out the door and don't feel quite right in what I've got on and feel compelled to change 😅 And you know, I think my "polished workwear" category does lean a bit French in that I tend to gravitate towards slightly elevated pieces with some kind of artistic detail... but I also think I have a "relaxed workwear" category that feels more Scandinavian (hence all the Djerf Avenue pieces I own, things like the oversized blazer, and tshirts)...but because those are both categories that I wear to actual work, i.e. the same activities, I haven't really considered it like that. Thanks for this comment that made me consider!

Congrats on such a big declutter feat! It's a lot of work. I recently did the same, and I felt so ashamed. I should know better, I did a small declutter when I moved to Denver with only three suitcases. Which yes is still a lot, lol! But it was a time when I had less, and when I left to come back home I gave almost all of it away. It wasn't worth it to move it back. I should learn to live with a small wardrobe and small number of home items. I also didn't buy much because I knew I wouldn't live there long term. Overall, my habits are better than before but there's room for improvement!

Well, we live and learn! And 3 suitcases may be "a lot" but compared to what we see so commonly on social media of wardrobes absolutely full, it still presents quite a contrast. I had been thinking about how I have a ridiculous amount of clothing and then I was recommend a few other KZitem "wardrobe declutters" where the creators had SO MUCH clothing - and if this is what we are seeing, it's no wonder that the "normal" amount has become a bit distorted. And I think this kind of content is pushed because the more that we all feel like we should or could buy, the more money some company ends up making. I think this is becoming my new motivation to really stick to my no buy, and then beyond that, not buying anything new if I can possibly find a secondhand version! I bet living in Denver was amazing, seems like it'd be very picturesque with the mountains nearby!

I was shocked at how much I decluttered during my seasonal switchover. I now realize it was about equivalent to recent thrift purchases. I really try to get the clothes to fit comfortably and not cram things in, so obviously if things are coming in others have to come out. The older you get the more of a cumulative collection it becomes, so it gets harder to find castoffs. Obviously you don’t need more, but the collector impulse remains. Inevitably, body and life changes mean certain items are no longer relevant. In that sense, not buying too much of one type of thing (mini skirt, high heel, a rise of jean, a dress shape, etc.) that’s no longer appealing will be smart long-term. I’ve really found a wardrobe a p p useful (writing it that way because sometimes it gets misinterpreted by the algo and deleted). Channels some of that collector and fashion visual urge into things you already have and there’s something oddly comforting about having your wardrobe with you at all times. It is a sort of armor as well, after all. Provides realism about how often things are getting worn, too. In passing, I’m always astonished that Djerf Avenue could be any kind of aspirational thing. It sounds like a knockoff Sesame Street.

I'm interested to see how much of my wardrobe is truly timeless as I proceed with the goal of "not buying things" even after no buy. I feel like much of my "nicer clothes" are in fact things I could imagine wearing when I'm 70 years old, but perhaps not so much of my more casual items. I hope that time will tell and I am fortunate enough to find out. Agree that having your wardrobe on you at all times is comforting! And also agree that the brand name "Djerf Avenue" is quite silly but luckily the level of visible branding they have is comparatively subtle, and for me it's more about how they make clothes that are the right length for my body type and proportions that result in full length sleeves, rather than 3/4 length (and pants in various inseams) whereas many other brands do not! 😄
