Very curious to see why some macro algae’s grow better in one system but not in another. Had a clump of cheato in my sump for two months. No growth and loss of coloration. Switched it out for some caulerpa and that stuff grows like you wouldn’t believe. Setting up my 150 gallon with a 40 breeder refugium and an undersized skimmer. Going to try a couple different macro algae’s and see which one does best. Great video.

Thanks for the peek under the hood. What's your take on reverse lighting schedule? Is pH something you monitor regularly?
@Coralust
5 жыл бұрын
I do not run a calcium reactor anymore in this tank and with the large refugium and dosing, I do not test regularly for pH. I felt it just made me worry for no reason. But it is a good indicator to watch if your having to many problems.

how big of a refugium do you recommend for a 90 gallon tank?
@NinjaSushi2
Жыл бұрын
The Triton method recommends 25% of your tank volume be your refugium volume but if you're going refugium only I would recommend 50% of your tank volume be a refugium. Put different forms of macroalgae in there and you don't really need mechanical filtration. The different microfauna, microflora and macroflora will do the work.

Hi!! I don’t have refugium or anything like that, limited space to make one I have a 75 gallon saltwater tank with a little high in Nitrates. You can grow all kinds of plant life in the display of a freshwater tank. Which does essentially the same thing. So yes but no one does.
@invaderjoshua6280
Жыл бұрын
Yes. I would always suggest plants in the display if possible in any tank that can. But a refugium is also great for freshwater to be used as a time out box for bully fish.

The mesh use to trap the chaeto, it is make from the "jump guard" product from DD, if so ,do you face any problem with the aluminum bar inserted in seawater? did you notice any adverse reaction to livestock ? i was thinking to do the same..

Love the direction you took, very natural approach! Do you think (may be hard to measure) the macro algae strips the water of beneficial elements your corals would otherwise be using?
@Coralust
5 жыл бұрын
Yes it's possible to lose beneficial elements with the excessive fuge but you should be doing water changes or dosing to help replenish those used up. Even a protein skimmer will remove some good with the bad but it's better then not controlling organic waste.

I just got a sump and want to start my refugium but do I need to have fish in my display tank before beginning it to provide bacteria for it to grow? I don’t really have a place for it to go in my sump so I am going to do away with the filter socks and put my refugium there and have a back mounted protein skimmer.

You can start your refugium before adding fish and its OK to remove your filter socks. You just want to make sure you have a balanced system.

Unless it’s hard anodized specifically to protect it from corrosion, the anodizing will leach. You may or may not see any ill effects now but in time it may be an issue. Been in the metal industry for almost 25 years.
