Note: For thick hair, try not to wrap your hair too tight around your finger/hand. Also, you can do two bun instead or until you get used to doing it. Most, if not all, Indian learn to tie their hair this way. When I straighten my hair, it won't stay in a bun, so I put on a hair band after tucking in the tail end &/or a decorative mini claw clip at the tail end to secure the hair in place. This way the bun will definitely last longer.

I used to do this when I was an archaeologist. Six weeks in the middle of flipping nowhere and minimal personal care (if someone was on their period they got first shower dibs so it was often the case I washed in sun-heated water from a local stream stored in a plastic tank) meant no matter how many elastics I had, I could never find one when I needed if. I didn't even learn it from anywhere, it just made sense to me to tie my hair in a knot of some form!

This only works with certain types of hair. Nothing will hold with my hair. Unless I secure with a thick hairtie for a bunch of hours. After that, remove the hairtie and it will stay. I had 2 knot buns similar to that in high school. For those with slippery hair, that's how you do it.

Honestly, loose buns can feel way more painful than very secure buns, like this. When the hair is loose, it kind of bobs around a lot and ends up pulling on the hair with more force (especially with mine, since it's over 3 ft long and pretty thick). Love styles like this!

@Est.4_14 what a waste of time this comment of yours is. Sure itd be great if everyone had freedom to do what they want but due to colonisation and white supremacy, the voices, discoveries, traditions, history and many other things from non white countries are silenced. Or not given importance. This makes it quite easy for white people to steal or seem like they were the only persons to discover something that has been done by many people of colour for many years. Its an unfair system and calling it out is not spreading hate or gatekeeping but in fact bringing attention to ignorance and history of non western countries/cultures. People should be allowed to respectfully try all kinds of things from other cultures or add it into their life. But its shitty when white people or people who have more power and privileges (such as big celebrities, big companies, those that have generational wealth and etc) take things away from others and claim it as theirs. Many artists have also stolen from lesser known ones in the same way, making it seem as though it was their own original idea or never done before, even if it had been. Unintentionally or not, claiming it as their own original idea without research or acknowledgement of people who regularly do this, is shitty at least in my eyes.

@@bbbean Well, thanks but I just cut it short. I need to wash my hair in the morning because if I sleep with freshly washed hair, I look like an exploded pillow the next morning. And short hair is so easy to dry. Also the high humidity for like 4 months doesn't really go well with long hair but it's okay ish with a short haircut. And when I had hair long enough to probably do that style, my hair worked like a warm silk scarf. And each morning my neck and hair was soaked in sweat. I tried braiding for a while to keep it out of my neck at night but you're busy when you work and have small kids. Not to mention unwanted weird waves each morning. So short hair works best for me.

This is me , I have extremely straight hair so this won't work. My mum , who has wavy hair, does this all the time. I tried to as a kid but failed haha

When my hair was long, I used to tie it up with a lock of my hair. I'd take the majority in a ponytail, just excluding a tiny lock from somewhere in the back. Id twist it in a snail bun and then use the spare lock to tie it going in the opposite direction of the bun. I could workout, run, dance, etc and it wouldn't fall.

Super fine straight hair said, "No, I don't think I will." I just don't have the density for it to hold together. However, any pencil or pen will do if I have nothing else. Somehow figured out how to put my hair up using a pencil when I was about 10 and I love using hair sticks, especially in the summer. I've done something similar to this, but use a hair fork, and even then it's a 50/50 shot whether or not it will hold.

Yeah, my hair is two feet long and its super fine and flat. When i tried it, it held until i shook my head a little. 😞 thought i found something that would work.

Thats so interesting. My hair is 3 feet long and the hairs are fine and sleek but I have a looooot it's very thick and my hair is too thick to do this. She must have a specific length (shorter than to her butt lol) and density to her hair to achieve this.

@@elizabethstanley6701 Yah, my hair tends to form more of a knob than a bun when I twist it up. Granted, it's always wanted to revert to its default state, so it takes either a tool like scrunchies or sticks, or an entire can of hair spray to get it to stay otherwise.

I can do this, usually higher up on my head, but for the life of me I can't do the pen or pencil trick. How do yall do it!? (I'm dead serious, not kidding, how do yall do it)
@Amethystar

@@animelover69 I know a couple ways. The way I taught myself is to hold your hair like you're making a ponytail, put the stick underneath, wrap the hair around it once (or twice depending on how long), then twist the stick until tight and tuck the pointy end of the stick against your scalp. The second way is to twist your hair and wrap it into a bun, then insert the pointy end of one stick at the bottom side of the bun and go up diagonally until it's sticking out a little bit. Then flip the stick so the pointy end goes back under the bun and shove it the rest of the way in. If you like two sticks (and I do), just add the second for stability. I use longer sticks (9" or so), but some people use shorter ones. I also find it stays more tightly if done when your hair is wet. It doesn't really dry inside, but I live in a dry place and that hasn't been a problem for me.

This only works if you have 'fried' hair (as you pointed it out yourself lol) so if you have healthy hair no matter how long your hair is it won't stay . (:

It doesn't have to be fried, just needs a bit of texture. Straight/flat hair can't hold these types of knots. You might be able to form a bun and run something like a pen through it, but even that might require a bit of texture.

This is exactly how I do my hair when I’m chilling around the house or get hot, but my hair’s super long so I’m able to use my whole hand and do a high bun. Honestly worried I won’t be able to do it anymore after I chop off my split ends, but my hair’s past my back so I’m sure it’ll still work fine.
