Flat-shifting! Read that the late-great drag-racing legend Bill 'Grumpy' Jenkins would grind half of every other tooth on the gears to make for more positive 'flat-shifting'.

Great technique, notice how he rolled out of the hole - with minimal wheel spin, then got on it quickly. Also, that's a standard bench seat car - which is why the shifter is shaped that way. Lastly, anyone catch the shift light - lower / right dash?😊

Its harder to do with modern cable shifted transmissions, hence it being a lost art
@creolegaudet

@@Cutlass_Rudd It's actually not. A modern manual shifter will actually make it easier. It's virtually impossible to miss first to second. The talent part is that left leg tapping that clutch pedal just right while having the stones to not back off the accelerator, keeping it to the floor, between shifts. Second to third is the most difficult because you could mistakenly go back to first. Third to fourth is a piece of cake. Unless you have some wild rear gears, you shouldn't need to go into fifth.

Geezer - Regrettably after reliving my youth with a Pontiac Tempest 400 4 speed I drove extensively from 2013 to 2023 going through three different engine iterations and about 50000 hotrodding miles, I had it with 4 speeds! Noisy Throw out bearings, Pilot bushings, rubbing and bent clutch forks, hanging up linkages, just the repeated mechanical action EVERY SHIFT you can feel the wear of each acceleration run, and then the Oh Shit moments. Done with it- Buick GS455 with TH400 auto for me now...smooth and lays it down just fine, and SO MUCH more reliable not even a question if you are doing serious miles.
