Watching this from Russia now, it’s like interacting with the dearest people, my true spiritual family… What Thomas says about being gentle and non- judgemental towards those who are leaning to veganism due to the range of reasons, not the only one, resonates so deeply within me! Your advocacy, Thomas, is a divine blend of profound knowledge, deep wisdom, and being both human and humane..❤️🙏🏼 Special thanks to you Jeff, for this VeganLinked project!! Being currently in a country which is almost “vegan hopeless” from the point of view of both the rigid / orthodox traditions and the severe climate conditions, it’s such a soul pleasure and relief to feel connected to my dear vegan family of the world! Vegan since 2015))

I love your interviews and all of the interesting, insightful people that are interviewed. I have been a nurse for 20 years and going vegan in 2017 has been the best thing I could’ve done.

I didn't know about Veg Michigan! I went vegan in 2015, but really committed when I moved back to Michigan. Thank you for posting! Edit: I think its fair and respectful that Veg Michigan moved towards using "plant based" vs "vegan", as veganism's main focus IS reducing animal suffering, not the health of humans.

Humans are animals too. So it only makes sense if it's healthy for a human and you're vegan that you would want what's best for that human animal ... 💚

That would be cool I suppose. I've interviewed a few I think. Most of those people are newbies. I mean unless you are referring to somebody like Susan Hargreaves who I released a few weeks ago...

I still don't care for labels. When people ask, I say I don't eat animals and nobody's confused 😎 12:43 Their impact is incredibly inspiring, especially the 30 say pledge ✨️

I don't care for labels either but we use words to explain things and vegan is the perfect word that will ideally become so universal that everyone just is and we won't need it anymore. I used to say I don't eat animals. I found myself saying I don't consume animals or their secretions because you got to cover that too. And then we got to deal with everybody trying to say some version of that instead of just saying vegan. There's literally nothing wrong with the word vegan. Any negative connotation is just a natural response to the truth. The truth often comes with resistance and opposition. It's not because of veganism that this is the case this is just life. It's also similar to loss. Like Elizabeth Kubler Ross's stages of loss. We essentially all go through these stages of denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. People don't want to lose something they are so intimately connected with. If you're just ordering food nobody's losing anything so really there shouldn't be any resistance. But when we are trying to influence others it's inevitable no matter how you frame it. So it's all in how you say vegan. If you say it with a bad attitude then it's going to come across negative. 80% of what we communicate is nonverbal. So it's all in how you say it. And then if you're cool about it then You help others get comfortable with the concept and not have a negative connotation. Or if they have a negative connotation this is a perfect opportunity to explore why they feel that way. Because it literally means nothing more than to not exploit animals or hurt them needlessly. When people realize that it's merely this empirical, simple thing then they are faced with questioning their self and how they could have a negative vibe about something so pure and beautiful. Having a word helps us normalize this philosophy and concept. Saying something like I don't eat animals is obviously insufficient. What about wearing them? What about their secretions, what about other products like furniture and inside cars and so on. Vegan simply covers that all. Same plant-based doesn't work either for the same reasons plus mini plant-based products have egg and dairy in them. There's really no reason to avoid using the word vegan as far as I'm concerned. I thought about this long and hard back in 2017 for quite a while when I was trying to figure out if I should use the word vegan in this passion project. And since then I've been proud that I stuck with it because I have yet to come across any sort of rationale for something else.

I admire him for forcing himself to watch the videos because honestly I think I would be non-functional if I did. I watched a video last night with Dr Neil Barnard and he mentioned an experiment done on mice and it horrified me so much that I literally tossed and turned all night last night and barely got any sleep. My brain will never forget it😞

I tend to use both terms either depending on situation or at the same time ~ plant based vegan, as I think both have different connotations for different people and using them together covers all bases and reasons for me. I find this kind of activism inspiring and would love it if local activists where I am could do this, as I'd love to get involved, but my health isn't good enough to drive it. However, I will be sharing this video with them 😊❤

The problem with plant-based is, for example, just yesterday I was in the grocery store and they had all these plant-based meals. You turn the package around and there's egg and dairy in it. I literally reached out to the manufacturer of the product right afterwards asking them to stop using that term erroneously and reminded them that Dr Campbell coined it in the '80s. And that The based is just for things like mushrooms and algae. :)

I should have said I use wholefood plant based vegan, not just plant based vegan and for this reason I don't buy much ready made food, so this post has increased my awareness of the problem with this label on processed food products. I also read your response to someone else about labelling and entirely agree plant based should mean containing no animal derived ingredients what-so-ever. The reason I use wfpb is to indicate that I eat healthy food not derived from animals, but follow up with vegan to emphasize that I no longer use any products derived from animals and strive to protect them. I have found it effective in making people more receptive, softens them to ask what I mean and opens up a conversation. However, it's not good if manufacturers are taking advantage of the term in the wrong way. I'm also gf, so if on rare occasions I buy ready made I have to label read, because even if it says gf on packaging, I have to look out for e.g. oats bring added as I can't tolerate them even if certified gf, so I would also spot if any ingredients weren't vegan, but I know lots of people don't read the ingredient lists, so this is a big problem and I will be trying to warn folk. I totally agree it shouldn't be a problem, plant based should mean only plant derived, not the basis of the dish being plants with added animal ingredients, which to me is a deception. Are the plant based products that don't have animal derived products in them also marked vegan? I probably won't now buy anything unless vegan certified regardless of being called plant based. Thanks for your thoughts and clarification.
