4:40 "But I've always been too scared to share music, because it's so, so personal." That is the beauty of music. It's a way to share a raw part of yourself. It's a way to connect with people that can transcend the lyrics themselves, regardless of how "finished" the song may be. Thank you for sharing your music with us.

Kim, I have never commented on YT before, but thank you for sharing this. Courage is a rare commodity (even courage that can occasionally be flat. Ha. I kid). It is plunging into potentially dangerous waters. It is easy to be sanguine about this sort of thing as a friend or a well-wisher, but far different to reveal yourself. Consider yourself blessed because it seems like you have a wonderful group of friends. I am eager to hear what you choose to share in the future. Sometimes joy creeps in through the fear Kim-I hope some has come to you by sharing this.

Thank you Kim. Your mix of silliness and poignancy is truly unique, and I'm thankful for these glimpses you give us from you making sense of your time. I'll admit though that I had to laugh at the buzzer sound.

You know you're part of a "secret" society comprised of those of us too shy to share our feelings with the world musically. It's a big, big, group. I'm more than twice your age (I think) and I too have notebooks stuffed with lyrics, cassettes (yes cassettes) of me playing my Casio synth through my stereo, trying to find riffs to explore. I catch myself singing some of my own stuff while walking my dog and still, after decades, trying to tweak them into being "better". But you've broken down the first barrier, so I envy you, and gleefully cheer you on to greater exposure. You have much to give/share.

The garage band songs were right bops, haha! It is great that you honored your life's work of songs in this video. You are doing really well and you need to continue working. I tell my art students that art is just a by product of an artists life and perspective. The collection of songs are in themselves still products regardless if if they are 8 seconds or long. We live in a world were polished songs go straight to Spotify, but people still love hearing demos. We love watching people grow. We love hearing demos or work in progress not because of the thing itself, but because it shows that the artist and person take time out of their lives to create something and that is what's really cool.
@OhItsJustKim
4 жыл бұрын
yeah i think one of the most valuable things i've learnt from these comments is that people care about art purely to experience the artist's individual perspective. obviously i know that because that's how i feel about my favourite artists. but the fact that there are people interested enough in me to want to hear what i express is an honour.

I really needed this video for my own motivation to write! Thank you as always. I especially loved the little section where you listen with your friends and all bop together. I think it's actually quite clever to start by putting out music from when you were so young!! Those years are the ones that we tend to cringe about the most, and now I hope you can see that even the parts you may have been most nervous to share are largely being warmly received. To a certain extent, it really doesn't matter what your singing voice sounds like (though I happen to like yours quite a bit). Your lyrics, your writing have a consistent voice all of their own. That, more than anything, makes this worth sharing. What you have to offer can't be offered by anyone else, or at least not exactly. I hope you keep sharing!

Okay, I'm amazed by many things: 1) by you manage to find all those old things, especially because you say you're not very structured. 2) by the design of your guitar 3) by how much I enjoy listening to those (arguably not perfect) songs 4) (and most importantly) by your shift in attitude towards sharing your music - I respect you for that! ps. I agree that music is never finished, that's why I enjoy improvisation so much, because it just exists in the moment. I'll probably never have anything on Spotify but at least I'm able to enjoy music with others...

I had typed all this before but it didn't post and just now realized. But, as close as I can remember what I had said. So the song you posted before this video really did touch me. And made me tear up, I felt the emotion you put into it, and just happy tears mixed in of being so proud of you. So it along with this I am slo so inspired by you, I have always just LOVED music, but never learned how to express myself musically in anyway, I keep trying to teach myself to play an instrument and never sticking with it long enough to really learn... but now I will. Thank you for that... you have helped me in previous videos in so many ways. even in just relating to your adhd, (i just don't have the hyper part) but what brought me to you, was a video where you were doing welsh words. I am American but of welsh descent and wanted to learn some of my heritage and learn some welsh words. But your channel has meant so much more to me than that now. You really are like this e-friend that I only get to see every now and then, but everytime I do, I laugh and I learn something.... I am so glad it has become more than every now and then tho... And Kim... you truly have a BEAUTIFUL voice.... I would so love it if this became a music channel... well, have the random talking to the camera every once in awhile for old time-sake too tho. LOL

Kim. I am a poet. I published five books in the Netherlands, published by one of the biggest publishers in the country, became a bestselling author. I don't know why, I suppose because people understand what the hell I am saying. Every poem I published hurts a bit. Actually, it hurt a lot. Because I gave it away. But I did it. It was alright to give away. Fuck it. Share it. The point is still not anywhere to find, but it feels better, because people loved it, as they told me. So, back to you. You are amazing, I love to feel your soul. Give us yourself. It hurts to be alive. But being alive is the only thing we have.

I think for me, creating art and creating music has always been a raw and painful experience that I ultimately love by the end of the process. But on the way climbing that creative mountain, it feels like a Herculean task making something vaguely consumable and worthy of yourself. So watching the evolution of your own music journey is really heartening for me to hear. Discovering that other talented folk also live in these extremely critical isolated bubbles breaks me out of the negative and isolationist mindset I've placed myself in. I have always enjoyed the sneaky bits of music you've included in your videos ever since I found your channel years ago, so I'm happy you're giving your music more light. As long as you keep sharing, I'll keep listening ❤

Wow! That's a crazy heartfelt video! I can understand your notion so much that it feels every other musician has something special going for them but I have to tell you (as kind of a musician myself) you got something special in your songs. Even just in the clips contained in this video. It's soul and emotions. The best songs are written by strong feelings and you used that emotion and gave it a fabulous vessel. It is extremely brave to share your closest songs with people you have never met and mostly probably will never meet but I am glad you do. Many of the snippets here gave me so hard chills, that I would like to sit down immediately and sing them myself because they touch me and/or inspire me.You speak about a lot that hit home with me, thanks for the inspiration, motivation and you bravery! I am of to finish some of my unfinished songs lying around.

You're so right about things never being finished. I currently do music production at uni and found creating music very difficult but I have done lots of live sound stuff. I did music technology in college and my work was almost submitted late because I was being too picky on things when mixing it which looking back made it worse as it sounded better to begin with. I have learnt a lot from that experience, not getting work in on time, but of how to do things leave for a bit and then go back and then improve a little and then leave it forever as a "done" project. I also have words written down and want to turn into music form but don't know exactly how to go about it. This video has inspired me to look into what I need to do to improve. But going to start by getting a MIDI compatible keyboard and try and figure out where things may fit

In my field we call it scope creep. I've always struggled with calling things done. You have to go into a project knowing what it should be when it's finished, but you change during the process and what you want changes too. But this is inspiring to say the least. I'm incredibly self critical so I didn't think I was good enough to actually pursue music with my own songs until I was 25/26. Now I'm doing a master's in music and have released music with my band. I've been a semi-professional singer for a few years and I've only very recently started performing anything I've written myself. My fear is always that I often can't tell if a song is good or not and that I'll make a fool of myself. I don't share every song now, but in the last year or so I started sharing them with friends and then the wider world and I've found it a lot better than I thought! I've had some really good feedback and it's just made it easier to share other things, and given me more confidence to write more. I look forward to hearing more songs from you in future!

It might not be the next Billie Eilish but what I can hear in those songs is you. Is your identity and spirit. If there is no other motive for making the music but having fun and being honest with the art then it will convey that and it will be unique :) I completely understand your struggle because I have it to and I've come to realise that I should just create and release and not think about it. But it's hard. We have to compete with everything that's out there and it's so much harder to look for the tiniest detail we don't like and blowing that up then to be happy with the things that do make it good.

Kim. You made me cry. I'm not going to lie, I regularly watch/listen to your videos, some several years old. At first it was because I thought your accent was cute and you were funny, but then it became because I identify with you so much. And this is why I stayed-- you have something to say, and you say it differently than anyone I've ever met before. You are a soul deeply searching for purpose and meaning and direction, just like we all are to some extent, but the difference is you seem so much closer to finding it and you are so pure of heart in a way I don't know how to be. I guess I just want to be more like what I see in you. I hear what you're saying and I'm so inspired by your resolve to always do things a little bit better and be more genuine in your pursuit, and smiling even though it hurts like hell and you're insecure. And for the record, I love all your music. I didn't even know you did stuff like that until recently but it is so strikingly beautiful. You are so amazing. PS. If you feel the overwhelming need to drop everything, move to America, and date a 30-year-old self-conscious short chubby guy who is yet to really find his way and has terrible luck in relationships and has no idea what he's doing, keep me in mind. 😝

One of the biggest lessons to learn was letting go of perfection and just letting a song be. A lot of the mistakes give it character, or often are unnoticed by everyone else for being so minor. and only our own selves, knowing how it "should" be, get worked up on it not being that. My favourite song made so far was entirely down to a massive mistake. Had I not made the mistake, it would have been fine. On the level with a few others before it and since. Instead, it turned it into an entirely different thing, I hadn't even considered. and it was better for it.

I unerstand where you're coming from completely, I relate to this so much. I have been uploading covers on KZitem since I was about 16? I'd say I have done what you feared to do, put the stuff out there, for all to see. And to be honest, I wish I hadn't back then. I made most of them private now, because honestly they are... bad. I really should have made songs for myself only, for at least a couple of years, learning to craft the videos and evaluate their quality. Instead, I wanted to churn them out as soon as possible, so I didn't give myself the time to learn. I wish I hadn't shown them to anyone back then either, as they sometimes come up in conversations, and it's difficult for me to explain that the stuff I make now is so much better. Besides, they did give me some constructive criticism, but it seems I was somewhat blind to my own imperfections... Don't feel bad about being insecure. Honestly, I believe that's a good way to perfect your abilities and be ready to face other people's opinions when you're ready. Perhaps, if you weren't so critical about the songs you made when you were younger, you wouldn't be as good now. Regardless, it's lovely to see you diging back in your past works and getting something out of it :)

I'm a songwriter and musician, working towards a degree in Music. I didn't realise you were as competent a songwriter as you have clearly shown in this video (my personal fav's being the one from the stairwell and the outro song)! But yes, you're completely right in saying that releasing a song can complete it. Even if it's the worst thing in the world, music is all about expression and creativity - not about being perfect or completely unique and original or even necessarily about be good. Saying that - you have so much potential, genuinely. Really cool video to watch! P.S. boy would I love to work on some of those songs and ideas xD
