As a past drug addict, being 6 years sober without relapse, it's a lot easier and cheaper to come up with $20 for dope than it is to come up with $500+ or more for rent especially when your sick/in withdrawal all the time due to your addiction. And if you don't have a stable income as an addict, which most don't, you spend more days than not sicker than a dog. It's not easy to keep a job.

@jayschafer1760

You're probably right. However, if I were the defendant, I would spend nearly every free waking hour applying for jobs and making copies of each job application, so that I could hand the bailiff a big stack of paper to drop on the judge's desk during the court appearance. "Your Honor, you ordered me to apply for 5 jobs each day. Since we last saw each other two weeks ago, I have only been out of jail for 4 days. During those 4 days I submitted 114 job applications, copies of which are in front of you." If the defendant did something like that, he'd at least get some respect from the judge for trying and making a good effort.
