The snare almost sounds like a synthesized hand clap or something, which I actually kind of like. But yes, definitely very different for him and I'm probably more partial to the more open and booming sound he usually has. Still one of my favourites of his drum tracks, as with the rest of the album.

These drums were recorded separately from the cymbals. One track are the drums with no cymbals and the other track are just the cymbals.

@@suburbanindiethe separately recorded cymbals vs. drums recording thing is still so crazy to me. The drums sound like they're on the other side of a concrete wall and the cymbals sound like they're right next to you

have a listen to simply the best by tina turner see if you can here the metal. Its a common technique for getting rid of spill and making the drums sounds tighter and giving more space for guitars and vocals. Chris lord alge vibe sounds massive on radio

This guy is awesome & you know why ? Hes not a stuck up asshole who is so modest. Technically hes not the best drummer but passionately no one is better or more cool. I e never seen him miss a beat or break a stick on countless Nurvana shows ive seen & he hits hard !

Morten it gives the drums themselves a more punchy, tighter sound. In fact most of the Songs for the Deaf album was done like this. With the cymbals and drums recorded separately.

That's actually really interesting. At the end of the first chorus when he does that little tom roll, I also hear a cymbal and always wondered how he hit that cymbal perfectly while doing that little roll. Lol now I know

@@Michal844and I agree, he is absolutely my biggest hero in terms of drumming! Not the most technical, but hits hard as absolute hell, and ALWAYS knows what serves a song, and never overplays when it's unnecessary. A true drummer's drummer, imo.

@@volutedmetal8543 yeah when I see people try to say that he isn't that technical and try to argue he is overrated it gets annoying. Because you can get any techincally better drummer and none of them would be able to replace Dave on QOTSA or Nirvana. He just has something you can't teach or learn, and that's what makes him special. There are tons of techinally superb drummers, and there is only one Dave Grohl.

Wow... It seems that the snare was played with brushes and not with sticks... Never heard a sound like this... It's like a mix between a big band Jazz snare with the dryiness of John Desmore's snare.

It's most likely that the drum mics picked up what was playing through Grohl's headphones. You can hear Dave counting some stuff out at certain parts. This clip also smells like fresh pots.

Cymbals were recorded totallg separately from drums. Neither were on the kit when the other was being recorded! Idk if Gene Trautman did it for Millionaire and Go With The Flow, but Dave definitely did for all the other tracks
