Back in the late 90's I was driving trucks as part of a project to chip-seal the snowy range road. It is absolutely beautiful up there, but no fun to drive a loaded dump truck up and down that road.

Snowy Range is one of the main reasons we retired to Laramie. It is only about a 40 minute drive from our house. It is one of the few places in the Rockies where you can get up to timberline on a paved road. You are correct that it is not that well known as the various National Parks (which are gorgeous too but LOTS of people). Sugarloaf Campground is one of the highest in the National Forset system, 10,797'. IIRC there are a few in CO slightly higher but this is the most accessible. Another advantage to the North Fork Campground is that you are only a few minutes from the small town of Centennial if you need something. Also, several good restaurants in Centennial if you don't want to do your own cooking.
