I went to see Bo live during his "What." run, and I was so excited to go meet him after the show. Waiting in line, I could see his face as he sat down preparing to sit there for the next hour meeting all of his fans, and WOW did he not look happy... And it wasn't like "Ugh these people annoy me" kind of unhappy/snarky or anything like that, but just in a general way about the whole situation. Of course, once the people started coming up to him he was all smiles and laughs and he was awesome to them, but seeing how unhappy he was in that brief moment and being able to relate to that "Alright, time to put on the smile for everyone" feeling, I didn't feel right about being just another person in line making him wait longer to get out of there, so I left. Bo, I hope you're happy.

Maybe it's not just about taking time off and coming back, maybe the performing is not serving him that well, even if we sure love it. I think he touched on having mental health issues in the past and he seems to me like someone who understands this issue and addresses it. Probably what led to his decision to make a change. But still he wanted to incorporate it in his final show to give as an explanation to his audience and also just to raise awareness on this. He was really young when his life changed so much, that would mess with anyone's head. People are not really aware of the fact that growing up like this (some start at even younger ages and with incredible pressures to be perfect and make it) can be (I imagine) a very different life than the one we lead. Bo said right before this song: " If you can lead a life without an audience, do it."

Another theme I loved began at the very opening of the show when sings to the crowd "if you (blank) say 'hell ya' " and the crowd responds repeating hell ya. After several variations he ends the pattern delivering the line "if you can divide by zero say hell ya", and the crowd yells it. He reprimands and tells them to listen and not be Pavlovian (trained like a dog). Later in the show he gets the almost all white crowd to yell out the N-word without realizing it by using the same kind of conditioned response pattern. Finally, he does it again (although with a darker twist) during "Can't Handle This." After the big revelation of his love/hate fear of the audience and then telling them how he's going to manipulate them... he steps back into role of topical entertainer and the mindless crowd cheers as he repeats the lettuce and cheese lines.

yeah, its why i love bo burnham and kanye. They are very self-aware about their role as an entertainer and hate how fame makes them so plastic in the eyes of the public. In kanye's song "pinocchio story" he sings about how he wants to be a real boy again, how he doesn't recognize himself on TV, how people use him to pull strings and how the audience doesn't love or know him, but just the idea of him. Meanwhile, people in the background are cheering. Its why he kept the song on the album the live version, because the audience is a part of the message. Its juxtaposes his message and his realness as an entertainer from what the audience wants him to be. A puppet that just performs for them without caring about his feelings or how fame impact him.

small detail I haven't seen anyone talk about but I always notice: during the break in Kill Yourself, Bo says, "it's a sensitive subject, and you're probably just hearing me say that, and I've dealt with s- I don't wanna be insens- look" first off, he cuts himself off. this might not have any meaning other than timing, but I feel like it could be something about him wanting to rephrase it so that it's perfect, so that it conveys exactly what he wants it to. and, my main point, "I've dealt with s-" that part always just hits me. he's dealt with suicidal thoughts, I assume by the tone and phrasing, or something to do with suicide. knowing that alone hurts, but the fact that he cuts himself off to make the more generalized "I don't want to be insensitive" statement instead just really gets me every time. ouch.

I'd like to add: when he sings about having a messy burrito, it can mean that when he started his path of comedy, he didn't know how many things wouldn't go like he'd planned, or the things he didn't see coming, thus that he wouldn't've gotten half the shit. It represents how different his decisions turned out to be, and I think that's really powerful.

This. Also, I think the Pringles can is an analogy to the confines provided to him by his job, and there's no way for him to comfortably get inside. There's a good possibility this is extendable to the contradictory confining expectations of society, where "having a daughter" expresses a desire to give his legacy a chance to break the confines.

I'd honestly go one step bigger... I personally think the Burrito could (not that it's his intention in this one and it symbolizing his career makes total sense) be representative for life in general. He would have done a lot of things differently if he had known what would come of it, he'd wished for more advice by someone with experience (the Chipotle worker) and overall there's too much of some things, other things he never would have gotten if he'd known they wouldn't fit". Life is overwhelming him the way the burrito is too much for him. It doesn't all fit and it feels like too much.

This theory isn’t all mine FYI.. I think that the burrito metaphor can also work in relation to Bo’s career. First to understand his progression to this point, you have to understand that he was a very young kid when he started out online and all he wanted to do was perform. However as his career develops, he starts to become disillusioned with the idea of art. Seeing the ramifications of viewing art as a marketable product and him becoming a brand to sell to people (art is dead, we think we know you). Bo started on social media and became a sensation, but he realizes the damage that fame can cause and begins to crusade against the very thing that gave him an audience in the first place (repeat stuff). By saying that he wouldn’t have gotten half of the things within the burrito if he knew they wouldn’t fit serves as a metaphor for Bo saying he wouldn’t have pursued this lifestyle if he knew it would break him. I also think it’s interesting the ingredients that Bo lists, taking out foods that are essential in making a burrito. By the time Bo takes out all of the food he isn’t left with much, but then again at least the burrito isn’t broken. Similarly, it’s heartbreaking to listen to Bo say that he wishes somebody would have warned him. He had all of these “experts” telling him he could have it all, but then by the end he was left broken. Broken by the very people and the very system he sought out in the first place. P.S. When Bo starts screaming into the mic at the end of Make Happy, I wince every time

Its so awesome to see what he has done with himself since his last comedy special. He dorected Eighth Grade. One of the best movies of the past 10 years and his directorial debut. It was pure Bo. Yeah, but. The Pringles bit is set to give context for the burrito setup. While the Pringle’s is a metaphor for not being able to reach for his happiness, despite his success, the burrito metaphor is meant to imply that he has so many things in his life. If he knew what he was getting into with everything, he probably wouldn’t have started at all.

In a podcast interview Bo actually revealed that the entire Pringles/Burrito bit was genuinely just him joking and mockingly acting like those were his biggest problems, also as a little dab at Kanye and his ranting. He specifically said that he had seen people talk about different interpretations for what it means when he talks about things not fitting in his burrito and relating that to his feelings or his life, but he confirmed that there was *no intentional deeper meaning* about his mental state in that part of the song and it was genuinely just a joke. It's supposed to be about him starting out making jokes and ranting over pointless problems acting like those are the biggest ones he has and then suddenly turning very honest in the last part and revealing his actual issues. And the "Thanks, I hope your happy" after the song is also more ambiguous. Like, I hope you're happy as in a genuine "I hope you're happy", which is how most people interpreted it, but he actually meant it more in a way of "here it is, are you fucking happy now???". However, they ended up using a take that "skews more to the genuine". I really like all these interpretations and that the absolute masterpiece that is "Can't Handle This" meant so much to people on so many different levels, I feel the same way. But at the end of the day, not every interpretation was intended by the artist. :) Source: kzitem.info/news/bejne/xoV3qH2Xm5mDdpw (starting at 11:20 & then also at 25:45)

Something you failed to mention or notice ( or maybe I'm just reading too much into it ) are a few more angles to the first song ( straight white male) and the third ( can't handle this ). You were really close in your analysis of Straight White Male when you said 'the first verse sounds like real problems' and of course you weren't wrong with anything you said after, but what you missed is part of how the song is structured and how Bo gauged audience response. The first verse leads us in on the idea that Bo is going to list honest problems, and at first he does. But as soon as the joke is revealed, 'straight white male', suddenly all the other problems are exaggerated and sarcastic, like you could put air quotes over them. But remember the first verse that sounded real, and how that stopped as soon as the joke came into play? You were right with your statement that Bo dislikes white privilege but is conflicted because he benefits from it. But he's ALSO conflicted because... Bo does have problems, real ones. He's a straight white male with problems, but by utilizing 'straight white male' as the butt of his musical joke, it becomes so easy to trick his audience into disregarding his first verse. The second thing i noticed was in Can't Handle This. Someone else pointed out the pringle thing, but I want to add to your words on the Messy Burrito bit. Not only is Bo trying to get the audience to realize that something has become to big to handle, but he's also calling to attention his own shortcomings again. Looking into the burrito metaphor, he's still getting a burrito even if it isn't perfect, but it's the perfectionism that concerns him, something that is also sort of implied by how his shows run on strict scripts that he cannot reliably deviate from, with perfect timing required for various bits. Bo wanted something one way and it hasn't met expectations, and that has left him frustrated. It seems like a commentary both on Bo and people in general: we want something and we want it to be perfect, but often times will try to completely reject it for it's flaws. It actually is in a similar vein to 'Lower your Expectations'. We want perfect children, spouses, kids... we want the perfect life, or the perfect burrito in this case. No one wants an imperfect or messy life, and nobody wants a messy burrito. One last thing i noticed is with the 'ill blow my dad before i eat it with a fork' line. Here we have Bo acknowledging again that he's facing a difficulty, but he is also blatantly stating to us that he would rather commit an act he finds deplorable or disgusting rather than make it easier for himself and cave in, possibly to get help. And it's all wrapped up in a humorous package that makes for a funny line with a bit of shock value to distract you. Anyway, sorry about the long message. Have a good day!

More and more as I get comments discussing and adding to the topics I bring up in this video, even if people tell me I’m wrong or I missed something (which I promise I take no offense to, I definitely look back on this video and think of a million ways I would change it) it makes me happy that there is even a discussion taking place about one of my favorite pieces of art. I get excited every time someone like you leaves a comment like this because it’s a whole new exploration that I haven’t thought about and my appreciation for Bo just widens. Bo was on the H3 podcast a little bit ago, and watching that blew my mind and getting his own perspective made me want to delete this video and start over from the ground up haha. In the end, and this is something that I don’t think I’ve really put out there, this video is meant for me and the analysis is less of an analysis of what I think Bo meant and intended and more of what it means to me. I found what. at a very important time in my life, and Make Happy came out when I was going through my first breakup from a serious relationship, so the messages that I took from it really stuck with me and have such an importance on my philosophy and what I think. In the end, this video is mainly about why I love Bo so much and was an easy way to circumvent writing an essay for a class. Sorry for rambling in reply to your comment but I’ve wanted to get this out there because I still get comments so frequently after posting this video almost a year ago now. I feel like Bo is somewhat in control over his 'catering to audiences in spite of yourself' issue. I think this video deals with the deper, more personal stuff, the stuff he hasn't processed fully. He doesn't want to lie to the audience, yes, but on a deeper level, he's even unsure about the things that aren't lies. I want to voice some extra thoughts and concepts, that I feel might also add to all this as well. For a comedian, who has used metaphors and similes before in his content, it isn't out of question that he truly does have an issue with Burritos and Pringles. The issue aren't the products, but the contents of the product. You don't buy a Can of Pringles for the can, you buy it for the chip. Same goes with a Chipotle Burrito. So content right? He literally sings, "I want to say what I think and Not care what you think about it." As a content provider, every since his humble beginnings, he has had to create a persona to sell his content. A brand. A label. In "What?", during the final song, "We Think We Know You?", the publicist even tells him he needs to stay prevalent on the internet and to keep the Bo Burnham Brand alive. He is the literal Pringle can to his Content. The literal Shell to his Burrito. He wants to be able to access his ideas and concepts without dealing with this persona. As Content needs to be continually supplied it become tarnished, messy, and not genuinely true the the content creator. We are the issue to this dilemma for sure! He absolutely hit it on the head. I don't want to go into any more, just to keep this message to a minimum. I'd really like your take on this. I had to do a lot of studying into Content creation when I was working towards my Degree in Film, so I am curious your take on it. Thanks everyone!

He has mentioned in interviews that he still wants to write, but for other people, that he doesn't want to perform it anymore. This solves the "I love you, I fear you" regarding the public. If you're not the one on stage, it's safer. My thought is that he doesn't want to hurt people so he might feel conflicted about saying the controversial things he is saying. But with someone else's voice/face, he might feel more freedom to do this. Him not wanting this persona anymore makes sense to me. He got a lot more real with people in the audience in Make Happy.

The lyric he had been repeating over and over like someone trying to escape from a pattern they're stuck in... "I don't think I can handle this right now" gets changed the very last time. After the frenetic lights and his wrenching yells he changes it to "I'll handle this right now-" then drops the mic and exits the stage walking away from the career and attention he had been addicted to.

The repetition is both a part of the music as well as part of the inner turmoil he is experiencing. The echo chamber of depression repeating your ability or inability and self worth is so powerful.

Been a fan of Bo for years, just watched Make Happy for probably the fourth time and every time I watch it I find different meanings. This past time I took to youtube to try to help me find a deeper meaning. I loved this video!! Very well done. The ending of the show makes me so sad, but I love how real it is. It also really shows that fame and money cannot make you completely happy. When he says "he attempts to give you what he cannot give himself" my eyes well up with tears. He's such an incredible human. I need to go see his new movie ASAP!

Maybe when he said “wouldn’t got the (blank) if it wouldn’t fit” maybe it meant comedy, like he wouldn’t have done comedy if it meant “it wouldn’t fit” (so like it wouldn’t in his life) Maybe when he said he can’t fit his hand in a Pringle can he meant he can’t reach his happiness Maybe when he said he’d have a daughter so she could fit his hand in the can means that he’d give his daughter the life he didn’t have Life’s biggest wonders...

Great break down! I saw Make Happy live. And than later watched it on Netflix. The feelings you get from watching it recorded are nothing compared to live (though recorded is still am experience). When the Finale song started I (and my friend) were excited for the joke and where the song was gonna go, when the "break down" happened, it was so intense. I ended up crying. Seeing it live made the whole thing so raw and I just wanted to hug him and make him well happy. It was amazing, and intense, and beautiful. I hope he does find happiness, he's an amazing talent, but no amount of fame is worth poor mental health.

I've got a theory that the Pringles bit is actually part of him expressing his feelings - including the bait-and-switch - and is tied to his unhappiness. At the time that he made this, Bo felt unhappy with his life. He knew happiness was there, but he just couldn't find it in anything. In other words, the Pringles are at the bottom of the can, and he knows they're there, but he just can't quite reach them. Then comes the part about having a daughter. Keeping with the idea that Bo has forgotten how to be happy, he's thinking that maybe if he has a daughter, someone who can find happiness in nearly anything, then maybe he can learn how to be happy again through her. Or, through his metaphor, he'll have someone who can reach into the Pringles can and grab the chips - someone who can find happiness where he can find none.

I’m not sure if I’m the only one who thinks this or not, but I feel like the Pringle Can things is a metaphor for life. He puts a lot of emphasis on not being able to fit a hand in a Pringle can and then he tells the crowd to put their hands up and says the same thing. This is him saying that life is too short for everyone and that they can’t make the best out of it. This is also expressed when he said that the diameter of the Pringle can is too short. That’s practically him saying that life is too short

Bo is one of the very true performers left. He's didnt let the cash and fame blind him. He didn't sellout. He was disappointed on how the industry was and is trying to inform that all performers, including himself, can't not be trusted. Yet so many see performers the answer to their problems. How if only they could be in their shoes life would be so much better. He's trying to tell that it's not all what it's made out to be. Can't handle this and Are you happy are both good examples of how people expect performers to us them happy. To make all our problems go away. That they have to sacrifice themselves for us. That's what I'm getting from Make Happy, What, and Words Words Words.

I always loved the Pringles bit. I always thought they represented happiness and how trying to force it out just makes a mess and you only get little pieces or crumbs of happiness. I also think him not being able to reach them has to do with getting older or at least less innocent. Thats why he mentions having a kid that can help an adult be happy. Im not 100% sure on exactly which but they both make sense to me. But I know there is more to it than just pringles.

Awesome analysis, but I am afraid you've missed one crucial element of the finale: The burrito is his life/career, allow me to explain. He talks about how he's going down the line and loading up this "burrito" with all these "ingredients" and at they end they don't all fit. I believe this is an analogy for his success. Going to Chipotle was a metaphor for show business, as well as all the ingredients. As he's making his way through his career, he's adding all these "ingredients" to become more and more successful, but by then end he's unhappy because his burrito, his life, is just too stuffed. Had this been explained, I think the audience problem could have been driven with a more intense meaning of living up to the standards of his messy burrito. EDIT: I forgot to mention that the "Burrito Expert" was him complaining that no one told him that adding on all of these things will string him out, which adds another dimension to this performer/audience paradox.

Except that the “burrito expert” are celebrities. Since they are the so called “Experts” in fame. What proves this theory In interviews he said that people shouldn’t listen to celebrities saying “stick to your dreams” or “anything is possible if you put your mind to it” he even called out Arianna Grande in an interview.

The ending of the show "I hope you're happy", and the way he says it has always hurt my heart so much. This whole show combined with his older song "Art is dead" is just truly saddening. Of course performing etc has brought a lot of good into his life, but it has also made things harder on himself.

i've seen bo live and i've watched his video content and i while i always think he's incredibly witty & talented i much prefer when he can take the extra time to make it as perfect as i know he sees it in his head. sometimes at a live performance it's like i can see him thinking about how the show looks/sounds in his head, about how much better or more produced it could be. i know he struggles with the guilt of trying to make content for us to enjoy, but i wish he's take a pause on live performances and not worry about "performing for us" so much and instead just focus on creating art that is from him and for him. a wonderful talent, one of the best comedians of our generation, no matter what he comes out with i'm sure to be blown away ~

Late commentary is late, but this got me thinking about the line where he says "I'm ok with small mistakes. If you got no more chicken I'll take pork. But I'll blow my dad before I eat a burrito with a fork." I saw one or two people mentioning this line, but I agree with their idea that it (and the whole burrito metaphor) is meant to speak to Bo's perfectionism. And we've all heard the warnings from professionals that perfectionism begets depression and anxiety. And I also agree that his comment about "blowing his dad" represents the lengths he will go to not compromise on his vision, even if some modifications are healthy. And it stings doubly because it seems that from past performances (especially with "what." and the infamous poem called "dad"), Bo and his dad really don't get along. It could all just be for comedic effect, but I think writing an entire poem about how he wishes his dad would die in violent ways is a little extreme, even for Bo. He also seems to spare his mother the same harsh commentary. "I'm ok with small mistakes" = I know I've been complaining this whole time, and I really am willing to make some concessions "But I'll blow my dad before I eat a burrito with a fork" = but this is my life and I am a perfectionist, I am an artist and my sorry mental state will just have to deal with it.

Bo stated in an interview the burrito thing was not as deep as people were making it out to be; it was just another joke, no metaphor. I understand the point of the song and I respect it immensely. It saddens me to my core for him, however people do need to understand the burrito thing was just that, he made the two jokes (pringles/burritos) to make up for the sheer emotion of the second half.

There are a few ideas in this which I hadn’t considered before, but I feel it’s depth is more suited to that of a commentary. I think you should expand on the context in which this performance was created, including Bo’s history and how that impacted the performance, “Can’t handle this” and himself. I also think a crucial part of this version of the show that was missed off is his song “Are you Happy?” I would argue that this is THE pinnacle of the show, rather than “Can’t handle this” as it leaves a much more pensive and emotional ending. Overall, however, this is one of the best pieces on “Make Happy”.

This performance was by far the most powerfully and generously put together message of all time, emotionally I am left feeling happy and yet sad, mesmerized, deep, empathetic, passion and growth that reaches the depths of my soul The one thing I admire greatly is his ability to be honest, not only to the audience but too himself as well while at the same time recognizing his own problems and issues and then dealing with it by putting all this into a show that will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the greatest and it was all done with such emotion that is absolute genius in my eyes. I think Bo will be back when he’s ready, he’s not one that’s into the norm of today’s establishment of the Entertainment Industrial Complex that’s mostly made up by dead corporate giants and empty people that sold their soul in exchange for pretentious and arrogant fame and so called stardom that often contains nothing but empty lyrics and one liners of someone else script, Bo in one of Bo’s acts includes a small segment of Bill Hicks skits where he is using the mice to offer a BJ to the devil (Satan) I wonder if Bo has seen this Devil rear his head and this is maybe what freaked him a bit. Hollywood is all based on Magic as well as satin itself and this satanic creature has destroyed countless people in its mix. I think Bo might have witnessed this and see’s it for what it is.

Great analysis. I have some additional thoughts, though. First, I think the pringles can might be a metaphor for not being able to quite fit in with other people, and when you can't things get a little messy. He even gets most of the audience to raise their hands which might be making the additional point that it's not just a problem he has, but a more universal problem. Second, Bo becomes silhouetted after saying, "He should just shut up and do his job." Before launching back into the burrito metaphor. The silhouette imagery here is to underscore that the bits he does for his job only reveal an outline of him, that there's some truth to what he believes in there, but it misses the nuanced details. So, when Bo emerges from the silhouette and you can see all of him, he's now able to drop the act and the silly metaphor and say what he really feels, which is that he doesn't feel like he can handle this right now.

There are three other performers who come to mind when I think about Bo. Pink and Andy Kaufman and the magician Chung Ling Soo. Pink made a song about explicitly rejecting the process ("all you have to change, is everything you are...") and she has lived her life that way. Kaufman was always performing. So was the Chung Ling Soo. When Bo seems to be live, it seems like he really does have anxiety problems performing. But he's also said that he magnifies his problems for the performance and he wonders why people understand when he magnifies for humor that he doesn't really mean it but when he magnifies the seriousness they assume it's the 'real' him. As with Kaufman and the magician, we are presented with a mixture of real and performance and don't really know where the line is.
