While I appreciated that Colleen Hoover penned a novel about domestic violence, and how individuals who've grown up exposed to such abuse could end up in a similar situation in their own relationships, it all seems to end a little too smoothly. Lily allows Ryle to have joint unsupervised custody of their daughter, her logic being that her own father abused her mother, but never Lily herself. In reality, not all abusers operate the same way.

the biggest horror in this whole thing to me is that Hoover used to be a social worker before becoming an author. the way she 'handles' heavy subjects like trauma and mental health comes off as deeply irresponsible to me, especially for an audience of young women. the men are just Damaged and you can fix them, and the women either ~heal enough to become Mothers~ or are Evil. I sincerely hope she didn't make those opinions obvious as a social worker, but it's very evident in her books.

Then Ryle becomes even more violent with Lily and then Allysa tells her that if she stays with him, she’ll never speak to her again. YOU LITERALLY WANTED THEM TO GET MARRIED ***AFTER*** RYLE HAD LAID HANDS ON YOUR BEST FRIEND. Huh?????? Does Colleen even understand her characters’ logic?? Allysa was so frustrating the entire time. I have been abused in the past, but now am dating my boyfriend of two years. Just the fact that he wouldn’t hit me, a month into us dating, made me emotional and realize how “traumatized I was”. A year into our relationship, I read It Ends With Us. I had been working through a lot of my trauma and feeling so much better. CPTSD symptoms were lessening and everything. My friends suggested I read the book, and I did. It honestly hurt how I even view my friends. This book is terribly written and glorifies abuse. The thought patterns in the book (as a victim) are almost exactly how I’ve felt in the past. It was terrible for me to “re-live” it. This book kept making me feel like the abuse I went through was actually love. I have a super hard time believing love is kind and calm - and not abuse. This book almost ruined my whole “survivor” mindset. And I think Colleen should be ashamed that so many people got that take-away from her.

I have many issues with how this book handles domestic abuse, but my main issue is how it handles the climax. Abusers don't suddenly become reasonable people when confronted with their behavior. It is incredibly dangeros to do that, especially when physically vulnerable, like Lily was in that moment. It scares me that Hollywood heavyweights like Taylor Swift and Blake Lively would put their names behind this. Oh, and don't even get me started about the author's hypocrisy on being a cycle breaker (google the allegations against his son if you don't know...). Btw, if anyone is interested in an actual eye-opening book on domestic abuse, I recommend one called "Why does he do that?" by Lundy Bancroft.

They also put their names behind 50 Shades, so this is hardly surprising. I'm also a librarian with a distaste for Hoover's books. Sadly I've read too many of her books. Tell me if anybody else feels this way: There's a very pernicious trend within her work of what I would charitably call "strawman" depictions of stereotypical "independent" "Liberal" white women being subjected to abuse by damaged men who are coded as being "intellectuals" or "educated" professionals (i.e. strawman stereotypes of what conservatives think "liberal" cishet white men are like) and these women being saved by men who are coded as being more "traditional" (read: conservative). I have a feeling that all of her work is playing into a fetish she or perhaps an audience she has cornered has of a sort for seeing "liberal" "strong independent white women" being abused as a way of teaching them a lesson to not stray from men who are more "traditional."

You might be interested to know that the very same trope has been happening in Chinese online romance novel space for some time. An elite power wielding abusive "strawman", a not-like-the-other-girls and "independent"-but-what-she-does-always-benefit-the-strawman-somehow female lead, and a gentle traditional man who is also abusive but hides it better. One interesting thing is that an author explained why she designed every plot to harm/abuse the female lead, and the reason being that she the author "feels that the strawman is perfect and the female lead does not deserve him, so the abuse is to give her pity points and to let off steam for the author". This is insanely messed up. Apparently the readership is waking up too. This type of authors are nicknamed "boymoms" and "dick-worshippers" by readers, and this genera is now heavily rediculed by young women. There is hope in this world after all.

This book doesn't change anything about the conversation surrounding domestic violence - it perpetuates it. Through Ryles sister keeping important information about Ryle from Lily to keep her in the relationship, her mother telling her to hide her bruises, and Ryles redemption ark for having a sad childhood it all continues the same old narrative we've heard a hundred times before. And it is his redemption ark alone that RUINS the entire meaning of the story. The mere fact that Lily's abuser is still allowed to be around her child is disgraceful. That's how domestic violence continues, we don't place any responsibility on the perpetrator for their actions and let them get away with it because of their own traumatic past - that's the cycle of abuse queen! this story is a disgrace to domestic violence survivors and claims to do the exact opposite of what it does. 'good people' don't do bad things - hurt people hurt people! and frankly it is dangerous to tell someone that their abuser is actually a 'good person' they just did a 'bad thing'.

from what i’ve delved, baldoni wanted there to be intimacy coordinators and others to help rehearse and go through the dv scenes and lively kind of blew it off. a majority of his marketing that he’s flown solo on has also been more about speaking up about dv and trying to touch on that topic whereas the rest of the press tour has been a lot of florals and oh so pretty, bordering on trying to make a barbie effect. ex. “wear your florals when you go see the movie”. it’s rumored to say that lively was looking to have this be her “oscar” performance and kind of overruled a lot of baldonis choices and coho went along with it, including bringing her husband on to write some of the script. overall i like lively, but i think the way she and coho have marketed this movie is bordering on hazardous, whereas baldoni is truly trying to push what this movie should be about.

Justin Baldoni is catching a lot of heat but it seems out of character for me. He’s been a feminist for longer than it’s been “popular” for men to be. Blake Lively has always been after money, fame, and making her husband happy. From moving the date to create an Oppenheimer/Barbie effect just like her husband has been trying to do with his other business ventures and their marketing strategies like Mint Mobile to editing scenes. He’s been vocal about showing DV and how we should not blame victims for staying. Blake has wanted to turn it into a romance movie because that sells. Again I could be very wrong but it seems quite one-sided and looking and each person’s history and intent can help shed clarity.

charitably i assume that they arent trying to market justin baldoni as the romantic lead so that the character isnt overly romanticized, but who knows. and maybe he wants to be seen more as the director than just one of the cast. the only marketing ive seen of this movie was blake and the actor for atlas so i assume they are trying to push the non-abusive male lead as the heartthrob. but on the other hand, blake and ryan have a habit of promoting their movies with their in-group of pals (why the hell is hugh jackman helping to promote this movie?) and i wonder if justin baldoni just isnt in their clique in the same way

While sometimes the change in abusers will be subtle and gradual, that’s not always the case, sometimes their moods and attitudes change so fast it’s like a switch went off or like they were possessed. I’ve seen this happen my whole life with both my mom’s marriages and now my own sibling’s behavior. I have yet to read the book or watch the movie, but the quick switch doesn’t sound entirely inaccurate. Abusers will get ticked off and turn on you at the drop of a hat. Though I hate that she justifies Ryle’s behavior my making it a love triangle, it gives him a legit reason to get ticked off and abusers don’t need will reasons, they will create a reason out of anything.

Ok, but this is a lot bigger than Colleen Hoover. I cannot count how many times I've picked up a book at an airport bookshop with a cute cover, then flipped through it and realized it was a f*cking nightmare: intentionally on the part of the author, or not. "Don't judge a book by it's cover" is a proverb for a reason: and while it's certainly applicable to cute boys it is also meant to convey that you Should Not Trust Marketing. If the cover is cute, you're going to expect a story with a healthy main romance that ends with the happy couple riding off into the sunset or whatever. If that isn't what the book is about, it's false advertising. Please, ffs, read your erotica on AO3. It is NONPROFIT, so there is no false advertising. While not every author is perfect about tagging their work, you are so much less likely to get jumpscared by squicky stuff. It's not that it isn't there, and it's not even that every story with squicky stuff in it will acknowledge how squicky it is. However, more often than not the author will tell you that there is squicky stuff ahead. It has a very strong culture of treating issues of consent seriously, without limiting what people can write in any way. If you feel up to reading squicky stuff, there is lots of it and you can specifically look for it. If you don't, you can screen it out of your search results. It is hands down THE BEST platform for erotica, if you care about ethics (and I really can't see why anyone would not). Also like: free smut>$10 smut.

Here is my personal take as a literal romance author: I have no problem with dark romance. I am a fan of dark romance. I do *not* like dark romance packaged to the masses as regular romance and with zero trigger warnings at the beginning. Colleen Hoover plays on triggers for the sake of “plot twists” in a genre where it is by definition being romanticised. Verity has a mother abusing her children as this device. That is my very specific trigger because when I had postnatal depression, I had thoughts of harming my child so bad that I was hospitalized and became a case of Child Protective Services for a year. Your plot twist < my trauma For years, movies and TV shows have had ratings and low-key trigger warnings at the beginning of them all. Books are the Wild West where anyone can read and write anything, so we rely on genre conventions to keep us mentally safe. When someone like Colleen Hoover comes into a genre and writes in a way that does not adhere to genre conventions it is very unsafe. Before anyone wants to come at me that “it’s just a book”, for *years* I had a car accident in one of my books that had no trigger warning. Then my brother died in a car accident. One day, I was listening to the audiobook *of the book I wrote*. Despite having literally written the book. Despite knowing it would turn out okay. I triggered myself by listening to it and fucked my whole day up. I spent the day crying and shaking and thinking about my brother. Words are powerful. Books are powerful. Authors should be very aware of that fact and some authors aren’t.

Again, this is my experience, I just personally think he was extremely rude and the way he treated crew the way he negated the schedule to fit his schedule so we were running around this house shooting in an unproductive way, which made us go into OT. Director expressed to him frustration that she’s experienced as a female director he literally groaned at her. groannneddddd. I over heard him giving his assistant shit for not being able to buy him certain tickets at Disney land he kept saying “I’m not waiting in line, I’m not doing that. Call someone.” Like bro.
