Whole point of conditioner is to replenish natural oils which shampoos strip away from your hair and scalp. If you're not using shampoo in general, then you're natural hair oils will stay in check. Ergo, no need for conditioner. Unless you have a really specific hair type that needs it. Otherwise stay away from it.

Edit: I used shampoo, it made my hair flat and frizzy but my hair feels softer cuz it was oily, I might gotta stick with using shampoo very little and only use it once it starts getting greasy, cuz when I used shampoo but then didn't use any hair products or anything cuz I didn't have enough time, my hair curls were looser and defined and it wasn't frizzy but the minute I use shampoo it's frizzy for a couple days but then it gets better. Hate the process because it takes days for my hair to actually look good and then it only like that for 1 or 2 days I don't use shampoo but I use conditioner bc it helps make it smell nicer and have have very very curly hair as I am mixed. So it helps me detangle it easier and quicker but now that I stopped using shampoo, when I do use it, which is only for special conditions but I don't do that anymore bc now when I use shampoo, it gets really really greasy and frizzy and it looks like my hair died,my dandruff is so much better and I don't have to be self conscious of having little white specs in my hair and having dandruff falling whenever I do anything

Yep, I only wash my hair once every other week with a ricewater shampoo. My hair has never been healthier. It’s the best way to go after bleaching your hair as well. Okay to clear some things up- 1) my hair looks fine in my profile pic I don't know what you're seeing but my hair is literally just tied up. 2) just because I don't wash my hair everyday doesn't mean I don't shower everyday. I rinse my hair out in the shower everyday. 3) when I did bleach my hair, not washing it for a couple of days after bleaching helped with any frizziness that came from bleaching and helped keep it from being as dry as it would have been had I washed it everyday after. 4) everyone's hair is different. This is what works for me. 5) my hair is thick and has a mixed texture. If i wash everyday, it's very unmanageable and looks like I have a lion's mane. 6) just do what you want to do. If this is gross to you than okay, but it's what works for me.

As someone with really greasy hair who also ditched everything for 40 days, my hair got greasy af and didnt fix until i started shampooing again. Just trying to get this out there so hopefully it can help someone, it doesnt necessarily work for everyone. Different hairs react differently to this routine. Edit: this got a lot of replies to I'm just gonna clear some things up: 1) my diet is actually pretty healthy thanks to my parents, no greasy food and no sugar for the most part. 2) I did shower lmao, as in I did wash my hair, some people mistakenly thought I didnt do that either. I think if one doesn't wash their hair they're in for a heap of trouble. Anyways it was just water and a tiny bit of brushing for 40 days, but that was it. 3) my hair didn't just get greasy, it also smelled awful, so that's also something to keep in mind. Thanks for reading lol, and thank you all for the suggestions. I might try the challenge once again by using the suggested products and ofc not going cold turkey, but who knows, maybe one day.

Yep, tried to do the same. I had to go back to at least a simple, semi-regular shampooing and conditioning routine. you do it wrong, don't go shock your hair by forcing them too early by not shampooing. hair still need to maintain the same way as you did with shampoo, as your hair become very greasy, the hair already maintained your routine. start by having less frequencies of washing your hair with shampoo. for example if you do 7x/week make it 6 the next week and so on. I tried that for a month. The itch never went away and then my neurodermatitis came back with a force, where I thought I was completely over it. Also made my hair super heavy and stringy. The only hairstyle that didn't look horrible was a ponytail with a braid. My hair didn't grow faster, it didn't become healthier and looked absolutely the same when I started washing again. And it took me a few weeks to get rid of the itchiness. Maybe it works for some people. Didn't work for me at all. Edit: As I get these like every other comment: - No, I do not have a bad diet. Yes, I have tried different diets throughout my life. A healthy diet is definitely better for skin, hair and overall health. Exercise is also important! - No, I did not just stop washing my hair. It was a whole routine with a lot of brushing, washing with water and washing my brushes. And yes, I still used soap on my body. - The scalp does not produce more sebum if you wash your hair regularly, that's a myth with no base in science. - I wash every 3-4 days with the Wella SP clear scalp shampoo and sometimes I switch it for a milder shampoo to not strip my hair too much. I also oil my hair and use a watery hair tonic on my scalp if I feel like I need it. I also massage my scalp to increase blood flow and relieve tension. My hair grows like crazy (waist length rn and I'm going to cut off a big chunk again soon) and is in a good condition. As are my nails and skin in general. - The problems I tasked about came and went with not using any shampoo. That's the common denominator. - Neurodermatitis is a chronic condition. I am lucky enough, that it's not so bad, that I can't manage it well usually. The no shampoo method was one of the things I tried in managing my rather dry scalp. It didn't work for me and that is okay. Other things did. - Your experience with it is valid and legit, but so is mine. It's absolutely worth it to try different things to be more comfortable with your hair. No shampoo or very infrequent shampoo is an absolutely legit method for SOME people. It not working for me doesn't mean it's bad for you, but also doesn't mean I am doing anything wrong. We all have different skin and hair and there is no one size fits all solution. - If you have skin/hair problems, don't hesitate to investigate whether there might be some underlying condition. Sometimes it's as easy to mend as making sure your vitamin levels are good enough. But sometimes there could be something else and it's always better to know than not to know, especially since some conditions make each other worse. EditEdit: It's really fascinating to see that now that I've very thoroughly addressed the samey comments I've been getting here, instead of rude and baseless assumptions about my diet and hygiene, I just get rudeness for the sake of it. Thanks for letting everyone know you have nothing to contribute. Sorry for making you upset with my experience.

@@PutSomeTwazOnIt Afaik the dermatologist standpoint on the topic is to wash as often as is needed to get rid of the itching, because the itching means there is an inflammation going on. For me that is every three to four days. After years of trial and error (several medical shampoos, that were horrible and a whole bunch of shampoos with and without all kinds of stuff and in a big price range), I am now using the Wella SP Clear Scalp Shampoo against dandruff. I did not have dandruff, but that shampoo gives me the longest period until I begin to feel uncomfortable. I don't care that it has sulfates, as long as my skin and my hair are healthy. And they are.

Hair is different for everyone, some people have to wash their hair every day and other people can’t wash their hair for more than twice a week. Most people push their wash day to once a week especially for curly or long hair. If you have really oily scalp however it's better to lessen that time frame. For dry scalp try using leave in conditioner or oils. If you decide you just need a quick rinse off between wash days make sure to use conditioner. I did this 3-4mnths before the start of 2024, it was a really good decision on my part. Before, my scalp was very itchy & I'd have a mountain of dandruff if I didn't wash it everyday. Now there's no dandruff after a good, high pressure rinse (I only use water, and I have a hand-held showerhead. I use the jet function to get to my scalp). I've even convinced some others to start the same process (with obvious variance in the routine, suitable for the person's needs). The only product I put in my head after all this time is black castor oil (for hair growth). My hair is naturally oily, so for a while, I only needed my sebum to keep it healthy. Now It needs a tad bit of help from going dry, especially in the back- and black castor oil is what I use to combat breakage. I apply this stuff when my hair is lightly damp to the touch (from water) because the oil helps keep the moisture balance from being too dry.

The reason his hair is better is because it's no longer being dried out by alcohol, ceatyl alcohol, steryl alcohol, or the multiple forms of sodium or silica/mica they generally add to shampoos. There are very few shampoos that don't add these ingredients into them. You could say that those ingredients are bring added to clean your hair, but they actually dry out your hair even more. Ot can also more breakage and damage to your hair. That then leads to you going to the salon and getting your hair done. Then whoever cut or styled your hair can suggest a hair care product to buy before you leave after you complain about how bad your hair or dandruff gets. Your hair looks great for a few days, then is ruined all over again, rinse and repeat. Conditioners are even worse than shampoo. I've never in my life seen a conditioner where on the label it does not list those ingredients. Conditioner dries and frizzes your hair so that it "looks fuller", but is overall making it worse.

Yes, but the oil stays in the hair. When you live in an ultra urban area with air pollution like Shanghai or Hong Kong or New York, your hair is going to trap pollution like a filter and the oil only exacerbates the situation, leading to more oil secretion and clogged follicles. @@wkhdtit’s likely the products you’re putting into your scalp causing this. It could take 1/2months for your scalp to recover and not be used to products going into it everyday. It could very well be, the shampoo & conditioner you use, is briefly keeping your scalp moisturised for a day or so then causing it to dry out without the product. Hence causing the dry scalp, itchiness and dandruff.

You can actually not wash your hair technically and get away with it… but this only applies if you either: swim a lot, take baths, and most importantly don’t smoke/ live in a city with a lot of smog. Smog in sebum =stank. And tbh showers become irrelevant because showers only work if you use detergents which you used in your body but you skipped your hair so… baths it is. Oh and i mean swimming in a lake or River. Sea salt and sebum just draws moisture out of your hair which can leave it feeling like a straw

As someone who has absolutely murdered their hair with bleach and dye over the last 13 years, nothing has made my hair feel as good as not washing it for 2 weeks. It feels disgusting and every day all I wanted to do was wash it, but now my hair finally doesn't feel like steel wool anymore.

It’s cause all those chemicals they put in most store bought shampoo and conditioner and really just all hair and body care products, that’s why I think more people should shop at small businesses on Etsy and stuff, there’s a lot of small businesses who make amazing shampoo, conditioner, and tons of other body care products that are free of harmful chemicals and are also environmentally friendly!!!

As someone who literally makes body product at home … u probably have no idea what ur talking about and I guarantee the shampoo u use still has “chemicals” bc chemicals are not inherently bad & the green washing is real .

I’m black and we can go up to 2 months max without washing our hair. “What does this have anything to do with being black?” Because Our hair is different and yes we take showers too. We put shower caps on to prevent our hair from getting wet. If you’re wondering how can we go so long without washing our hair then it’s because our hair doesn’t get oily or builds up oil. It does the complete opposite by absorbing it. We don’t put any dry shampoo in it but we do have to oil and grease it. No we can’t wash it every 2 days because our hair would literally be unhealthy, damaged, and break off. And If you reply to my comment with ignorance I’m reporting.

I'm 4 years without shampoo. I use conditioner but only when I get a haircut. The first couple of months the hair gets really oily and if you have dandruff it might get worse, but it gets a lot better after a while. Avoid hot water and don't scratch your scalp with your nails, fingertips only.
