Excellent video as always brother. As I have already mentioned before, Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami is one of my favorite plays in Kabuki and the character Danshichi is in my top 10 Kabuki characters. However, I have a question here: how does the experimental and alternative version of the Nakamuraya house of this play (starring Nakamura Kankūrō VI) differ from the Matsushimaya version, commonly known as the "original version", Nizaemon version or Ainosuke version (starring Kataoka Ainosuke VI) and the Edo version, aka the Tokyo version (starring Ichikawa Danjūrō XIII)?

The Nakamuraya version is radically different in the staging, using candles on stage for the koroshiba, and minimalistic stage settings. The Kamigata version removed the use of Takemoto narration, and used a rougher makeup for Danshichi, among other things. I want to make a video about it this summer, although I don't have footage of a Kamigata performance, so it is a bit tricky to study the scene properly.

I’m tracking down a particular dance I’ve seen a few times before, the performer is a male who hops form leg to leg alternating between out stretched arms and I’m wondering where it came from

Seems like a pretty exciting program! Quick question: where do you find the music you play in your videos? A lot of the kabuki albums I have found online are really old and low quality, but the music in your videos is always great.

I mostly use those old grainy records that you can find on KZitem, with a bit of audio editing to remove some of the noise.

Perhaps the ease of recording video of performance so it may be played at any time has made the seasonal aspect less important? Plus I think that the need for the theaters to pull in live audiences would make them lean harder on more popular and well known pieces. In Western Shakespeare performance,it is far easier to get an audience for "A Midsummer's Night's Dream" than for "Pericles, Prince of Tyre". ( Though my local Shakespeare society is taking a crack at Pericles this summer - none of us have ever heard of a live staging since the 1970s.)

The modern repertoire system of highlights definitely has an impact on these aspects of performance. But there are dozens and dozens of popular plays and dances set in the spring to choose from. In the case of summer and autumn it gets a bit more difficult, I suppose. Would love to hear your thoughts on the Pericles productions, by the way!

One quick question, How long are the performances? I heard they're 30 minutes long.

The daily performances usually last a bit over 8 hours, divided into two shows (morning and evening). Some short scenes and dances can take 20 minutes or less, while dramatic scenes and multi-act productions often go for several hours.
