lime! thanks! I have been using straw, I may switch to the pine now, but tractor supply is all the way on rt 112 and I hate that ride.

Straw will work as well or you can use wood chips. We prefer pine flake because we have had such good results in the past.

This is such a great channel. I’m learning so much and taking notes lol. I love the idea of the deep litter run. Do you add kitchen scraps to that? If so, would that encourage unwanted critters? Also do you clean the run out and add to your compost when you clean out the coop? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

Thank you so much!! We give our chickens almost everything. We don't overload the run with food scrapes that they don't eat in a day...That would probably attract rodents and the like. We actually do vermicomposting and the worms get the majority of the kitchen scraps. We do move everything from the run to the big compost to let the heavy nitrogen load break down some more, but that doesn't take very long. Thank you for the comment and the questions!

@@cedarporchhomestead Would you consider doing a video on vermicomposting? That sounds very interesting.

@@christinewilke893 we have an early video of when we first got our worms and set up the worm tower. We also have another that show us harvesting the worm composting along with harvesting some of our regular compost.

I've never tried that lime, ordering now to try it out. I've always used the DE but have been looking for an alternative. Thanks

When you get it let us know what you think. We like it better than the DE, but would love to hear others feedback as well.

Is the lime harmful to chickens if they peck at them

First Saturday Lime is advertised as being safe even if "accidentally" ingested. We have been using it for probably two years so far and haven't had any negative effects from it.

I’ve got a chicken run similar to yours and I’m wanting to put a metal roof on it as well. The problem is the run is already put together and has hardwire cloth around it. The frame is kinda flimsy and I’m afraid to put a lot of weight on it. How did you put yours on there without getting on top of it?
@cedarporchhomestead
Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately only one word describes it…Carefully!! Using a ladder I was able to very carefully put the roof on. I didn’t video that part because it was pretty sketchy. Doable but sketchy. If you’re going to put a roof on please be extremely careful.

Please know that pine shavings can be toxic to chickens.
@cedarporchhomestead

We haven’t experienced large flake shavings as being toxic, however I do appreciate your advice on the subject. Fine shavings can pose issues of their own and cedar flakes and shavings have been found to cause problems. What do you advise as non-toxic alternative to pine shavings?

@@cedarporchhomestead the best thing, from what I’ve read, is hemp or sand, but hemp is SO expensive. It seems like if you’ve used pine for a long time, it would be ok? I have, also. Sand seems like it would get nasty, fast. I’m NO expert. Just have been reading a lot about it for a while. (With surprise) Just google “are pine shavings toxic for chickens?” And you’ll find what I did. I hesitated to even mention it, as I know how things can be on the net! I really enjoyed your video and will be watching! I learned a lot! Thanks! Jennie

We currently have 9 currently but the space could easily accommodate 12. We will be adding a few more this season that we will hatch in our incubator. I’ve got some leghorn eggs from a friend and we are a few days out from those hatching.
