We loved leftover turkey growing up, but we always went to my grandparents' homes for holidays. So, my mom would start a crock pot turkey breast like this before we left and let it cook while we were gone (we lived in the same town as grandparents). When we got home, she'd put it away and make stuffing & instant mashed potatoes, as well as frozen dinner rolls, gravy, and canned cranberry sauce. Those were always our favorites, and we loved having leftovers for days.

In my family, boxed is always stuffing. If homemade was in the bird, also stuffing. Homemade on the side was dressing. We always had dressing for Thanksgiving because we stuffed the turkey with root veg and fresh herbs.

We always had stuffing *(dressing I had a senior moment). My grandmother owned and cooked in a restaurant so in order to make enough it was cooked separate from the turkey. There was a danger of salmonella with stuffing and with a restaurant food poisoning was definitely to be avoided.

I honestly didn’t know what (cornbread) dressing was until I met my husband. I’m a Cajun girl and we only had rice dressing (some people call it dirty rice) for holiday meals. Happy to report, my rice dressing is always proudly served with my husbands’ family holiday get togethers and my nieces and nephews say it’s not a holiday meal without Aunt Dawnie’s rice dressing 😊.

From Oklahoma here. Always called it dressing. It is something we make on the side of the turkey, not in the turkey. Can't get those crisp edges if you "stuff" it in the turkey. And my family are HUGE dressing fans. The best part of Thanksgiving. No one likes cranberry in my family but it just isn't dressing if you don't have that dollop of cranberry sauce on top. Thanks Bev

We make both stuffing and dressing. Stuffing for us is the typical recipe, dressing is wetter and put into casserole dish and baked until set like a cake would be. I used dried, toasted bread, chicken, onions, celery, soup, seasonings. It’s a family recipe that my cousin used to make. Now I’m the dressing “chef” and make many pans by request. It’s become tradition and we love to cook together. My daughter has started cooking with my dad on holidays. Making memories.

Here in the the central part of KY we call it dressing and it’s served as a side dish but everyone makes it differently. My mom made hers using homemade biscuits, homemade cornbread and a few slices of bread along with ground sage and turkey broth. One dish without onions for those finicky eaters and a second with onions. Got to please everyone 😊. When she passed away making the dressing became my task and although I use the exact same ingredients it seems I can never get mine quite as good as hers. Oh how I miss her cooking! I also make yeast rolls from scratch, macaroni and cheese from scratch and some desserts. Oh yes, I make my pie crust from scratch too. Can’t stomach the store bought ones. We have ham and turkey, broccoli casserole, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, corn casserole, green beans (not casserole), homemade dumplings..the list is too long to continue. Wishing you a blessed Thanksgiving!

I LOVE throwing sides in the smaller slow cookers and let them simmer without taking up Stove & oven room!❤ I use slow cookers DAILY & for Thanksgiving, they cook: the sweet potatoes for the casserole, green beans, turkey and my homemade cranberry sauce. ❤

I was just talking with her this weekend about wanting to make a Turkey breast so that I could have the leftovers and my own sides, etc. With changes in how our family holiday gathering is and also being gluten free, I don’t miss some things actually on the holiday so I will be making up for it afterwards. Never done that before but I am looking forward to being with my family. We might as well be across the street as I live in Broken Arrow. Hi Mindy! Your question about stuffing vs. dressing...here's two ways I was told is the deciding factor...1) stuffing is when it's served beside the turkey and dressing is when it's served inside the turkey and 2) the words stuffing and dressing are used regionally, stuffing being northern, dressing being used more in the south. As to how accurate that statement is, I have no idea, lol, but speaking anecdotally, I'm from the south originally and grew up calling it dressing, too.

Stuffing = IN the bird Dressing = on the side. As Aton Brown would say: "Stuffing is Evil!" Stuffing, if not watched carefully can lead to an under cooked bird internal temperature and ultimately food poisoning. My mom NEVER stuffed her bird. We always had dressing on the side. My mom's an Arkie so we always had Souther style cornbread dressing with sausage. Family favorite to this day. My son won't let me even think about trying any other recipe! :D There's just my son and I so we only ever do a on-The-Bone turkey breast. Only one year did I do a full turkey because we had "adopted" a couple my son works with so we made sure we delivered Thanksgiving dinner to them as well. We had plenty to share and it was awesome!
