It really works great doesn't it. I used this method over 15 years ago when I made a banister around my stairwell. You can even make your tenon a bit longer if your careful with the draw knife and I love it better than a tenon maker because it gives your work that hand crafted look that sets craftsmanship apart from the factory mass produced look. Good work sir.

You can also use hand cut tenons as an "upgrade" to upsell your product if you are to the point of taking orders. Thank you for the compliment, always appreciated.

I like these hand carved tenons more than the mass produced ones, much more authentic.

How do you stabilize the tenon. Can you show us how you build the jig that holds it? Thanks. You make some good videos :)

How do you make the other half......hole in log that fits this?
@Kcdragz

With a simple drill bit, either a spade bit or a forstner bit works the best. I suggest using a scrap piece of wood to drill a hole first to test fit prior to drilling a hole in your actual piece you wish to use for the furniture. Hope that helps.

While this works its way more work then needs to be. Buy a tenon cutter and make your work easy!

Hi. do you think this would work on texas cedar logs?

Hey I work with cedar a lot, I’m sure after 3 years you found your answer. I’ve never tried this method but I can say cedar is be try brittle wood, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work I would only bet that you may have problems with the actual tenon breaking off. Also if you succeed in making them may be a good idea to apply a coat of sealant on the ends of the tennon as cedar has a tendency to crack when exposed to air from the end grain. Thought this may help someone else with the same questions like I said I’ve never tried this method but have years and years of working with cedar.

Does your tenon have a hole through the center? From the drill guide bit?
@TimberKraft

Yes the tenon will have a hole from the center of the hole saw bit.

Saw a very experienced furniture maker here on KZitem, who uses round wedges instead of slices. This would work perfectly then
