Former Victorian Police Chief Commissioner Kel Glare says there was no reason for police to be involved in the Peng Shuai t-shirt incident at the Australian Open.
Spectators wearing t-shirts which read, 'Where is Peng Shuai?' were asked to remove them before Victoria Police were called to deal with the matter.
"Certainly things have changed, there's no doubt that police were required to do things that they probably didn't want to do and that didn't go over well with a lot of the public," Mr Glare told Sky News Australia.
"But so far as this episode with Tennis Australia is concerned, there was no way in which police should've been involved, in any way, shape or form - unless of course there was fear of a breach of the peace or there was an actual assault - but wasn't a matter for police to be involved in that at all."
