APC makes an adapter that changes output voltage to 110/120/127. Line-R1200, about $60~65ish? Amazon.

Picked one up used sounds clean and quiet. Changing the tubes really brings ups the base and smooths it out.Paired with a parasound 275 plays cleaner than my rogue cronos magnum. It does feel like it will break if you sneeze on it though. His review is pretty accurate Will be adding a ground.

Just added another one of these to my system. I have three of them and I run them on an APC Line-R set to 120 and then dialed into 120 on a variac. They have been running for three years in brutal conditions in my garage. 16 hours per week all year in Texas. I have good tubes in them Gelelex Gold Lion 12au7/12ax7. I have changed the two 10 uF 250 film caps and two 10 uF 160V electrolytic caps to high quality audio metal film caps 10 uF @ 400V X4. Also changed the WIMA caps on the sockets. I left the remaining electrolytics and resistors alone. They sound absolutely amazing. They sounded good before I modified them actually. The main thing with these is that you run them at 100V. The power supply is actually rated at 110v which is weird. I have each running into an ST-70.

It may not be the voltage at all. Chinese tubes are not known for reliability and even many of the expensive tubes can have a very short life. If you want tubes that are likely to last, go for Eastern European/Russian tubes.

I love these preamps. I have two of them. The only thing that I dont like is that it has a 110V transformer. I just run mine on a variac at 110. They sound amazing.

About 110 or 120v. +10% of line voltage should not impact the performance of the amp. If it does it is bad design since 10% tolerance is normal to take in account. A bit higher line voltage might reduce the live of the filaments of the tubes though. Same as incandesent lamps.

I bought one and it sounds great. I do however get a intermitent static sound. Sometimes if I move the interconnects and power cables around it stops for a while. I put some genalax gold lion tubes which were pricey but sound better than the stock. I also bought a $60 power chord from emotiva which has the girth of a garden hose, probaly overkill but I don't trust the chinese quality control. All in all it is a pretty good sounding upgrade.

I just bought one of these and came across your video. Thanks, I found it very informative. Since the power cord has a grounded plug, wouldn’t that prevent one from mistakenly inverting the power if plugging into a wall outlet. That being said, I’m sure someone could use an extension cord that’s been tampered with, in that case probably a risk… you thoughts?

the tube sound is 2nd harmonic distortion
@frodobaggins7252
Жыл бұрын
Actually, tubes do create distortion but they are 2nd and 3rd order harmonic distortion that is actually pleasing to the ear. In fact, that is what creates the "tube" sound. The reason hifi went to solid state among other reasons was to remove all distortion for the purists. Anything that "colors" the sound and was not included in the original recording is removed. Problem is, many people like some coloration. When you hear people referring to audio equipment as sounding "warm", or "dry" they are referring to a characteristic that is produced by the equipment that doesn't give an accurate representation of the sterile environment the music was recorded in. This is also the reason "audiophiles" shun tone controls. They want to hear the recording in it's purest form. Pure tube amplifiers are also known to be lacking in bass or can be flabby or boomy in the lower registers. Getting high wattage is exceedingly expensive as well. Class D amps run cool and getting high wattage out of them costs next to nothing but they are pure and bright, edgy and analytical, and the distortion they produce is high order and not pleasant at all. This can be fatiguing and one of the best ways to soften that is with a tube buffer or preamp which adds back in some of that pleasant warmness. In fact, many have come to believe that class D with tube buffers or preamps create the best of both worlds. Manufacturers from high end Bang & Olufsen, McIntosh and PS audio to low end Chi-Fi have all started to go in this direction. kzitem.info/news/bejne/qmiAy3x7ZpRyko4&ab_channel=Thomas%26Stereo kzitem.info/news/bejne/2Xew0aWZs5h_lHo&ab_channel=PaulMcGowan%2CPSAudio

I was thinking about getting this. If I do it will be painted black. I will say this, Not sure the 110/120v really makes much a difference at all. Your caps and resisters have a power rating on them. I would think they will only use what's intended.
@6AM_YT

The worry isn't about the caps or resisters, it's about hitting the preamp tubes with too much juice. But they're probably fine. The ground issue is more of a concern, but much easier to fix.

I used an adaptor 6x4 to 6z4 to upgrade the rectifier tubes and almost fried the pre-amp. It should have worked and I"m guessing those adaptors do not work. I bought them on amazon and though most reviews were good there was some reports of bad outcomes.

Tube sound comes from distortion, in the way that if you go and send a clean, pure 1khz tone it will not be clean and pure on the output, you can have noise and /or harmocis. The distortion from guitare amp is more with the gain you but way too high.
@6AM_YT

Howard Dumble said it came from a crystal lattice, so I don't know what you're talkin' about. Kidding aside, my point is that a tube amp designed to be clean will still produce a "tube like sound". The idea of designing an all tube stereo amplifier to purposely introduce distortion, even if it's second order harmonic distortion, so bizarre I can't fathom it. I would love to know if there are actually companies that are doing this. Doing it with hybrid amps, I might understand.

I work at a shop that repairs, mods, upgrades, etc. guitars and tube amps, etc. All it takes is 1 good zap to put you in your place. Someone had tried to fix their old Marshall P to P wired amp and somehow put a live wire from the PSU to the input. It was a freak mistake, but I should’ve slowly brought up the voltage on the variac, but I plugged a guitar into it, put my hand on the neck, and completed the circuit carrying around 400v. I thought someone had smashed me in the back between my shoulder blades with a baseball bat. Again, it only takes 1 good zap, and your left hand will forever be in your pocket while probing around with a non conducive probe. My choice is a chop stick. Before working on a high voltage anything, know what you’re doing. Cool vid, man.

@@6AM_YT Yeah, no doubt. It was a scary experience. I’m sure you’ve seen cops getting zapped by a taser in training? (I think you know where I’m going… lol) Maybe people who work on high voltage gear should get a controlled zap of just enough voltage to show em to be careful. I’m obviously kidding, but you never forget both your first love or a big zap. Lol

How are people to learn anything if you are not willing to teach? If you really dont want people to die on you then you have to thoroughly explain things. Im saying this because the internet is a place to share information, a place you can learn lot of things. But not everything is is out there. So if you know something that can help another out, you should just put it out there, especially since you are already putting out some content.
