Fantastic interview! I could listen to these two legends talk about music and life for hours. I was lucky enough to have a chance to interview Soken-san and Uematsu-san directly in the past and those conversations already blew my mind, but seeing an interview with them two together is a whole other level of awesome. Especially as a composer. Thank you for making this!

Ugh...Uematsu is 63! i was born in 85 and been inspired by his music since the early 90s with FF4. I would not be a musician without him, period. I am going to be devastated when his time comes. please live another 20-30 years!!!!

While Nobuo Uematsu is certainly recognized in the video game world, I personaly feel he's not recognized enough, given the results his work has achieved. Looking back at the FF games he's done - especially 6, 7, 8, 9 & and part of 10 - they were absolutely ground braking and industry-changing products, so significantly narrated by the music, particularly. Obviously they told some great stories, with loveable characters, deep gameplay mechanics and cutting edge graphics, but Nobuo Uematsu's music was the thing that gave them the soul. This unique characteristic that so many fell in love with, and cherish to this day. The newer FFs are still good games with some great musical pieces - but as a whole they clearly struggle greatly to be as influential as the older titles (not meaning sales, but the overall impact). When talking about the greatest video game creations in history I think "Final Fantasy", and when I think "Final Fantasy" Nobuo Uematsu is the first thing that comes to mind, undoubtedly. And I'm so grateful for all the music and emotions! Long live Master Uematsu ✌🏻🖤

While I agree that recent iterations of FF haven't been as "impactful" I think in part that gaming landscape has changed so much as a whole, and also the wide breadth of games available just really make it hard for any single game to really stand out and "define" a genre or generation. There are some in recent memory like Breath of the Wild or even No Man's Sky's revival, and a handful of others, but of course even "generation defining" is anectdotal I feel. Also FF 14, like No Man's Sky, managed to save itself and become a really ground breaking MMO game of its own right, still going on, finished one complete storyline and on to another, and still operates as a monthly subscription based MMO which has all but pretty much died except for WoW. Lastly, I think that as people who grew up with the NES era and up of FF games, the new ones will always be compared to older ones, the impact we felt playing them, and that they had on us, and I honestly think that no matter what, it's never coming back. I love many new games, but I alwas go back and repla old games. There's a nostalgia and bias to older games I played that just isn't replicated, but I feel for children growing up with games this generation, they will have those experiences and they will be defining to them, and I don't think it is even "wrong" to assert such an opinion as well. We probably will see articles heralding FF 11 and beyond in ways we didn't think so, and it will be no less accurate to say that some people felt the same way we did playing those early FF games as they do with recent iterations.

Only recently discovered Soken by playing the FFXVI demo and I couldn’t get over how well he blended familiar melodies from previous Final Fantasy’s. It's worth noting that Masashi Hamauzu, Naoshi Mizuta, and Takeharu Ishimoto are also genuinely very talented as well! Hamauzu worked on the X soundtrack with Uematsu long before doing XIII and VII Remake, as well as a few SaGa games... *And* he was bass singer for original FFVII's One-Winged Angel choir! Ishimoto's work on Crisis Core and Type-0 is excellent, and Mizuta's work on FFXI Online and Stranger of Paradise is too! Then there's Mitsuto Suzuki's *excellent* Mobius soundtrack...

I love the raw quality of Uematsu-san's early NES tracks. It's like the first album of your favorite band as they wail in their garage with cheap instruments and endless passion. I actually think he shouldn't revisit his old work though. It's hard putting yourself in the creative shoes of your earlier self. That's what makes Soken's adaptations so amazing. He loves those songs and can add his own endless passion.

Seeing this two together makes me imagine a jam with the Black Mages and Primals! I'm not one of those people that usually bothers to play other music while playing any Final Fantasy, so I feel a lot of love for both composers after growing into all their looping tracks and watching their bands perform. The way Soken uses Eternal wind in the Shadowbringers theme absolutely feels like he made a gift to an altar. You don't even have to imagine it. The Crystal Tower is right there in the cinematic when it plays. The sky around it is saturated with literal holy elemental light in HD. That's how good it sounds to me, every time I hear that part, I can feel my pulse picking up.

Thank you so much for letting us hear this talk!! I've gone out of my way to learn more about music so I can better appreciate some of the intricacies of both of their pieces, and I've even gone back and listened to a lot of that 70s prog rock and been delighted at hearing where some of my favourite songs had come from. I'm a XIV player but I'm also one of the few North Americans who played 2 and 3 on the famicom-- I had the chance in high school back in the late 90s, so I can say that at least one XIV player loves that old famicom sound! I still smile when I hear a lot of those original songs. I also love the talk about the records-- I think it's really fascinating. I've never been super into the notion of LPs because I don't have any personal memories of records and I don't really believe they sound somehow 'better' just by being a record, but talking about how just the process of listening to music on vinyl changes your attitude towards the music really makes me understand better about them. I can't wait to hear them all!!

When I was a child, I spent years leveling around Cornelia since I didn't know how to progress an RPG on Nintendo, let alone know what an RPG was. It was then that I grew in love with Uematsu's music and came to appreciate how each musical piece was the voice of a character, a town, or the game itself. I remember not liking FFX much because of the voice overs and fell out of love for Final Fantasy and would not discover that love again later until the later years of FFXIV through Soken. After that I gave myself time to go back to the other games and isolate Uematsu's score through out the other FF games and have come to enjoy them as they are. Seeing them both here was a great treat. Thank you for bringing these two together to give us, the fans, a little insight into their minds.

Growing up, Uematsu was a huge influence to my appreciation of music. He is absolute God tier and I guarantee I am not alone on that, including by those in the gaming industry. I'd argue the majority of composers in gaming music or chip tunes look to him as a major inspiration. I firmly believe there is no way to accurately measure how big of an impact Uematsu has had on gaming and possibly music in general. He is, on almost every level, on level with Shigeru Miyamoto for how important their contributions have been to the medium.

hey, i hope somebody can find this maybe. when i was a young child my parents got the ps1 for us. i was born 1990. although 7 very loved, 8 always stuck the most with me. the music, the characters. it was very much relatable. back then it was cool to be the hero, and gain better. ive grown to have an obsession with the music that has been created in the final fantasy universe. back when we were young early 2000s, my cousin had the newest things always. he had the ps2, and the new final fantasy 10. my memories were blurred, but ive really remembered so much of the game, just from watching my cousin play. when i replayed the game myself last year after 20 years, the nostalgia kicked me immediately. i regularly go into youtube to find old classic soundtracks like that. listening to them during the night to give me back that feeling it once gave me.
