The good old days when Mike could sing this :')
@bluskyelin4me776

I'm not sure I'd classify 2006 as the good "old" days for NOFX. I thought this song came out in the mid-90s. To be honest, I didn't think they were even still playing. I like to recite random song lyrics around the house so my 10-year-old can tell me "that's not even a song, Mom!" She googled the lyrics and hit on this video. Ah, but it's always a little disturbing to be reminded that our mothers had entirely different lives back in the "old days." :p
@Supernerdland

I think he was talking more about the political/cultural climate we've been embroiled in these past few years, not the era of the band. Thank you for story about singing random lyrics around your kiddo :3 that was freaking adorable. :D

His change for the "just an average Joe" line reveals the true meaning of the song. It's one of the most ballsy punk songs of all time, almost no one gets it.
@jimmyb4812
Жыл бұрын
What's the true meaning?
@iyziejane
Жыл бұрын
@@jimmyb4812 The surface meaning, or at least what I thought when I heard this 20 years ago, was that it's an anti-racist song about not labeling people with skin color. The true meaning is that it's an anthem for American Jews, who despite looking white, consider their culture and race to be separate from European whites in important ways. So the song is about that complex situation, where they look white but don't want to be called white. It's all there in the original lyrics but when he changes the "just an average Joe" line in this performance he spells it out. I say few people get it because I've seen many adults go through life without catching on to this Jew/White distinction, and it was even more unknown when this song was new.
@jimmyb4812
Жыл бұрын
@@iyziejane Huh. I never even thought of that. Going through the lyrics with that idea in mind does make a lot of sense. I think it may be both at the same time, but it definitely does seem to also be talking about Jews.

The Ramones formed in 1974 and released their first album in 1976. The Sex Pistols formed in 1975 and released their first album in 1977. Both are among that initial rise of Punk...but technically, the Ramones came first.

I'm always one to dissect a song. These lyrics tap into some deep, deep-seated feelings (ones I've always had) about resenting the label of 'white' and how newer generations--Fat Mike's & later ones--really resent the stupidity of our ancestors; with all their labels (now-dead terms like "colored folks") and--as *Greg Graffin* said--their "1950's fantasies" of having a happy family and a nice house with a white picket fence on Easy Street. For many white people, that was *never* reality, but it's still the ideal life for so many conformist whites. Maybe I'm wrong, but IMO these lyrics have nothing to do with being racist, in fact, the opposite. It's about how labeling people is pointless, stupid, and very 1950's.
@chrisr3671

That's the beauty of nofx. They reflect societies social problems past and present and sing about it in a satirical way. That's why they're one of my favorite bands.

Chris R Amen to that bro. I feel exactly the same way about *Bad Religion*, although their songs--especially Greg Graffin's lyrics--have a more dark & sinister tone to them, but all of it's still *awesome* music.

'Colored' ain't dead. It's now 'people of color'. And it's just as racist. Like beige ain't a color. Fuck you people. Not you. They're called... 'progressives'. Yes, it's that pompous.
@taylorhutchings4612
6 жыл бұрын
So when he sings "I ain't part of no conspiracy I'm just a fucking rich jew" at 2:34 it's somehow about anti racism? He's jewish so the lyrics are clearly ironic as he's projecting a negative image of white people and then subtly stepping back and basically saying "oy vey but that's not me goy I'm not white."

Anyone hating someone because of their religion is a bigot, but there's a difference between disliking a religion and people of religion. I dislike meat, but that doesn't mean I dislike people who eat meat. Do you see what I'm saying? "Good people will do good things, and bad people will do bad things. But for good people to do bad things, that takes religion." - Steven Weinberg
