Can’t just lump this all on Marmol…Cardinals had plenty of veteran leadership that could/should have provided guidance, but didn’t. The front office failed by hiring a green manager instead of a grizzled veteran. Marmol certainly wasn’t up to the task, but this isn’t a singular point of failure This is a top down leadership problem at the end of the day. Management, Front Office and Players.

Arenado and Goldschmidt are both shy types. When LaRussa was manager he had a system of 4 team leaders that spoke to the team when something needed to be addressed. When that didn’t work those players would come to LaRussa and say hey Tony you need to take this. I so agree that it was a Marmol problem. He could have tried to use Tyler O’Neil and Harrison Bader as player leaders but he attacked them instead. That to me is where it fell apart. Someone would have to prove me different.

Here is the reason why I think Arenado didn’t step up like people want. I think he tried to do that when he was in Colorado. I remember him getting in people’s faces and telling them what they did wrong and being the leader but that didn’t work out for him. Now, he is just like “f it. If that is the way they play, that is the way they play.” But also, it shouldn’t be 100% on Arenado and Goldschmidt to lead like that, it should be on the managers and coaches to do that. I see Arenado being a guy who wants to win but the rest of the team is complacent.

As Kieth Jackson would say, “Whoa Nellie”! As a Cards 60 year fan I recall the last manager that truly lost the team was Vern Rapp (76/77). Will Arenado’s statement be the beginning of the end of Ollie Marmol?! This is telling of Marmol’s inability to lead a clubhouse! The first two 1/2 months of this season will be very interesting. If the Captain of the Redbird ship can’t get his crew to conform and perform the Cardinal way then it’s time to bring back Molina and order!! Indeed this falls on Marmol!!

Agreed, mishandled the Tyler O'Neill situation and Contreras situation. Seems to be in awe of players like Wainwright, Arenado, Goldschmidt. More of a fanboy than a manager. Too young... needs to manage more levels of minors (before becoming an MLB manager). Mozeliak is at fault, because he fast tracked Marmol to MLB (as first base coach) based on a brief single A "short term" success. We need a manager that is either experienced (put in the work as a manager in minors for many years), Or, has played on the MLB level (i.e. can relate to what MLB players going through) i.e. Skip Schumaker. Is physically intimidating enough to demand respect (i.e. Matt Holliday)... Marmol doesn't command respect, he just seems to be there...and a spectator/fan boy in his own clubhouse... Needs to speak his own mind (not repeat what the General Manager/Mozeliak says)

the Cardinals should have fired Marmol and replaced him with a real manager instead of a front-office flunky. and traded some of their extremely overhyped "young talent" (Nootbaar, Donovan, Liberatore, Edman, etc.) for actual useful major leaguers. the Sonny Gray signing was great, but everything else they did this offseason was laughable. I see another last-place finish for them this season.

Marmol lost the team when he erroneously called out Tyler O'Neill for not running hard and being thrown out at the plate in the first week of the season. O'Neill was given the stop sign by the third base coach, and he slowed down approaching third. The third base coach then gave him the score sign, but O'Neill wasn't able to round third base and obtain his full running speed before being thrown out at the plate by six feet. Marmol , instead of reviewing the play on tape, called out O'Neill publicly in front of the entire clubhouse, and then went before the cameras and reporters and slammed O'Neill's play. Marmol then benched O'Neill. This situation festered all season, resulting in the Cardinal's dumping O'Neill, an All-Star, Gold Glove Outfielder with power to the Red Sox for basically nothing. Marmol must have photos of somebody - he certainly hasn't shown that he's a Major League Manager. The Cardinal's haven't had a Manager since Tony LaRussa - and they haven't won a World Series since he left.

Getting a good balance of experience and younger players is something that Cardinals need to have. With the successful players of the organization retiring or have departed (WS in 2006, 2011) the Cardinals are seeing a trend in the lack of leadership that has seen success in playoff spots. Wainwright and Yadi had a nice balance of leadership. Yadi is a game changer of an individual and his leadership was a staple in their organization. Well, with Arenado and Goldie not really being super vocal guys... management should know that and understand it. Bringing in Carpenter was mostly to have a voice in the dugout, I think. The guy can't hit as he used to, obviously, but still might bring up some flair in a clutch spot because he has been a good clutch player for us in the past. Without the shift, it should help him find more success in our ballpark. Getting some reliable and seasoned veteran pitchers whether they be new to the organization or have prior experience such as Lynn is a good thing. I definitely think the Cardinals had an eye-opening experience on where the organization is as a whole. Bloom and Yadi back in the organization is good. Wish we had Maddox and Montgomery along with Shildt but that's a pipe dream. I truly think that would completely change the dynamic of the 2024 season and beyond.

F.O./marmol shoulda not gave in to waino but they did which hampered the cardinals more then it did any good in all honesty... dont think i would care about anything when u have a pitcher with a era over 8 playing behind for every 5th game.. waino is a great pitcher/person for the org but even if u hit 200 wins ur still 3rd all time as a cardinal... i didnt see no upside to it its not gonna put him in the HOF... just was a selfish clown act... and should have been corrected by the F.O./marmol so in the nut shell its the higher ups that are at fault n nor arenado or the vets or the young talents etc...and also want to add i think the cardinals supressed contreras's flame to be loud n vocal to fire people up..

I've been a Cards fan since 97 and a Nado fan for the last decade. Marmol is awful, Mo needs to go, DeWitts need to sell team. Nado/Goldy are too quiet and not leaders. And bringing back M. Nolan Arenado doesn't have to be the best leader in the world, but by very subtlely throwing everybody else under the bus and not stepping up to be the veteran leader in the clubhouse himself, he kind of shows that he isn't doing a lot to step up himself and isn't taking a lot of accountability, and the same goes for Waino and Goldy as well. Other head honchos like Marmol and Mozeliak really aren't helping at all, but Arenado kinda told on himself with those comments. The Cardinals resemble a shipwreck more than a proper team. This is an organization whose complacency and kicking the can down the road for decades has finally caught up to them in my observation.
