One of the best of all time. I wish we still had a handful of athletes like this guy. Maybe if we did I’d still watch sports. Just a class act thru and thru.

He pitched until he physically could not. People argue about best this best that, but who do you really want to see pitch. Nolan and high gas.

He's still an underrated pitcher, which is just incredible. I saw him pitch when he played for Houston, and had a seat behind the catcher. For 3 innings, I did not see the ball. You heard Ryan grunt and the pop of the ball in the catcher's mitt. Guys throw hard now, but no has ever thrown harder than Ryan. I think he threw something like 12 1-hitter and 19 2-hitters, and of course set the record for strike-outs which, like 7 no-hitters will never be broken.

He threw an 88 mph ball with a dislocated shoulder at 46 his last time. His feats sound like a Grecian myth

@@hospice8896 That's not true. It was an elbow ligament, not his shoulder. And if I'm not mistaken, his last pitch in his last start was a 96 MPH fastball.

I’ve only seen one no-no in person and it wasn’t Nolan. I wished it had been, but it was awesome none-the-less. It was one error from being a perfect game. The error was on Charlie Hayes, who miraculously saved the No-hitter by a great play on the hot corner. Terry Mulholland was the pitcher and the date was 15 August, 1990 at Veterans Stadium. I still have that ticket.

He held up the base and said yesterday Lou Brock was the greatest base stealer, today I am. Every Sports headline said Nolan throws 7th no hitter! He was also Nolan's 5000th strikeout victim.

Look at that final pitch...straight down the middle and a HOF'er who could damned-well hit missed by a mile. If you didn't grow up watching Ryan at any point in his career...sucks to be you.

Starters now happy to get into the 6th inning- don't blame them, though - statistically, it's really hard on the arm to go more than 100 pitches.

Earlier that day Rickey Henderson stole his 939th base surpassing Lou Brock. Ryan got the headline. Henderson was also Ryan's 5714th K, making Henderson Ryan's "victim" twice and it couldn't have happened to a "nicer" guy.

Rickey was awesome. “It gave me no chance. He just blew it by me. But it’s an honor. I’ll have another paragraph in all the baseball books. I’m already in the books three or four times.” Rickey was also Nolan's 5000k...on a 3-2 fastball, tad high.

The quote by Rickey is what made the story. He made the self-important quote, and then he gets knocked below the fold (that's a newspaper term) by maybe the most unassuming star in professional sports.
