When naming vanillin, shouldn't it be 5-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde, why does the carbon with the O double bond not count?

I think it should, it could be a mistake. You might also be able to label it a functional group and not include the carbon I guess, but idk

what is the difference between phenyl and bezene and cyclohexene?
@austinsalmon853

Not sure about the difference between phenyl and benzene (possibly just using different nomenclature), but, the difference between cyclohexane and benzene is that there is no alternating double-bonds on the cyclohexane like there is on the benzene rings and phenyl.

You refer to a benzene substituent as phenyl when it's attached to another chain or ring. If it's standing alone with its own substituents then it's just benzene

+Alexander Litrel phenyl and benzene is the same thing. but its different if when we used it for naming. if the benzene is attached to a ring more than 6 carbon, the compound is NAMED AS phenyl-substituted alkanes. example: 3-phenylpentane. If the benzene attached to six of fewer carbon it named as alkyl-substituted benzene. Exmple: propylbenzene. correct me if im wrong. >..

@@haleemahsulaiman2457 Just incase anyone else is wondering: "The key difference between benzene and phenyl is that benzene is a cyclic hydrocarbon in the shape of a hexagon, containing only carbon and hydrogen atoms, while phenyl is a derivative of benzene, created by the removal of a hydrogen atom. Therefore, benzene contains six hydrogen atoms while phenyl contains five hydrogen atoms." (so benzene = C6H6, and phenyl is C6H5)

There is no clarification because only one position is available for the ketone group. It other words, wherever you attach the ketone group you will get the same molecule.

can cyclohexanecarbaldehyde written as cyclohexanal ?
7 жыл бұрын
Although you asked this quite a long time ago, I'm still going to try to answer it, just in case :D In this case, we use "carbaldehyde", because the aldehyde is not part of the main "chain". I think "cyclohexanal" could never be used. Only maybe "cyclohexylal" if you identified the aldehyde as the main chain.
