But professor pls tell me why do we call (SO3)-² as sulphite instead of sulphate. As we call (ClO3)- as chlorate. And why we call (SO4)-² as sulphate not as persulphate?? Please solve my problem professor

They are just relative terms, one more oxygen vs. one less oxygen, they don't correlate with numbers like two or three.

how do we differenciate between an ionic compound and an acid just by looking at it's formula ?? by that , that an ionic compound has charge and an acid dors not ??

Oxyacids typically have hydrogen stuck to some other element with a bunch of oxygens that follow such as Hx---middle atom---Oz with x and z representing the number of hydrogens and oxygens. Ionic ions don't always start with hydrogen and follow this format.

how come the charge doesnt change when you change the number of oxygens?

When a neutral molecule loses a proton you always get a -1 charge.

H2SO3 has 3 oxygen atoms but has prefix (ous) it should be (ic)
@isratahir9401
Жыл бұрын
The polyatomic ion SO3 is sulfite whereas SO4 is sulfate. SulfATE will have the ic ending not sulfITE. So, H2SO4 is sulfuric acid and H2SO3 which has one less oxygen will be sulfurous acid.
