Astounding illumination of the experience of suffering in myself and others. "He suffers so much and does not know how to handle his suffering so it spills over into your life and others around him." Gives reason to contemplate one's own suffering in the past and at least recognize the beginning of one's response of compassion. But-- it is MY practice that makes the difference in the relationship, and never my demand that the other person get a practice, do something in the practice, in short, change. This whole teaching ("you cannot take the left away from the tight or the right away from the left") is profound and so good for practical use in daily life. Thank you.

I love this video. But please help me understand: Does this also mean there is no peace without war? No wealth without poverty?

That is a profound question. I'm not knowledgeable but would love to hear what Thay, or one of his students, would answer. I expect that the answer doesn't in any way condone war or poverty but would bring us back to ourselves. My work is to heal my own suffering and grow in compassion and hope that I can affect others positively through my compassion.

Perhaps there are two kinds of peace: peace as part of a war/peace duality, and peace that transcends this duality. Same with the wealth/poverty duality.

One is more simply the absence of the other. Without the possibility of war, the existence of peace would have no significance. Because of the contrast between wealth and poverty, you understand the opposing weights of material possession and absence.
