If your looking for sci-fi stuff I’d recommend Stellaris trailers. There’s not necessarily specific lore about it because it’s about you building and managing your own empire in a completely unique galaxy but the trailers tend to cover what can happen in the game such as diplomacy, war, rebellions, and so on. I recommend watching them from chronological order but in reality it doesn’t matter that much because the trailers are made so you don’t need any before hand context to get a decent idea of what’s going on. My favorite trailer was for nemesis doc because of how polished it was.

If you haven’t seen the Outlast series yet, I’d recommend watching through their trailers. Outlast scared the everliving hell out of me to the point that I’m numb to horror cause “it’s not as bad as Outlast”. It also pushed the boundaries of what should be legal in games, as Outlast 2 was almost banned in Australia for a very controversial scene that was eventually heavily censored. It’s made by Red Barrels studios, who happen to be out of Montreal. The Outlast Trials is their upcoming game, set to release (hopefully) sometime this year.

Well, any opinion is valid. I love Sanderson though. The guy really steps outside his comfort areas as a white male Mormon. He reaches out to all sorts of people from the disabled, minorties, and so on. Helps a lot of them with their projects, pay them to be test readers, and really listens to make sure he is writing respectively. I love him myself. But yeah, If you have a vibe then. Mask of the Rose trailer came out today, you could watch that. It takes place in Fallen London - a Victorian Steampunk world and one of my favorite universes that also features Sunless Sea and Sunless Skies. I found your channel by browsing for WH40k videos and notice most of the franchises you feature are fairly violent and/or focused on high-fidelity 3D graphics. The Gamescom has plenty of variety for themes but also show off their best graphics, but not all the greatest games are so graphically intensive. Hopefully you'll enjoy this recommendation and find it a refreshing change of pace.

Solid stuff! Also bricky has a new 40k video out, about all the various legions of space marines. If you watch it, the only thing I'll say is legion 2 and 11 are "removed from imperial records" and presumed to be imprisoned or killed? It was initially a games workshop way of letting you role-play your own custom legion before they really got into lore and stuff. Now it's just... a gaping hole in the storyline that people hope will be filled in eventually. Fatshark is the studio that made the vermintide games, warhammer fantasy video games, and I'm extremely stoked to see what they do with darktide.

The missing legions are a historical reference to the Legio IX Hispana, a Roman legion that vanished from historical records around 120 AD. Historians have debated over what happened to the IX Legion for decades, if not centuries. Hence, 11 minus 2 = 9. It was just a cool thing Rick Priestly threw in, since he was an archeology major in college. Since then, the fluff has stayed in to allow players to make their own rules, but that wasn't the original purpose. As far as the in-universe explanation goes, no one really knows except the Emperor, maybe some of the primarchs, Malcador the Sigillite, maybe a few other humans (like less than a dozen across the entire galaxy), and maybe some xenos (like the Eldar Harlequins). Captured by an enemy? Killed? Culled by the Emperor himself? No one knows. They could have been wiped out during the Rangdan Xenocides. Maybe they turned traitor during the Heresy. Maybe they got lost in the Warp. Maybe their genetic materials failed. Or maybe they're still out there.

Always cool to catch up on game trailers alongside interesting or fun reactions. The only thing I would like to see more is the sense that you're seeing _some_ secondary content (secondhand content? secondary sources?) from time to time, even if you don't do reaction videos on them. There's so little to grasp about video gaming from trailers alone, but there's a lot to engage with and learn without actually playing the games. I don't think most of it would make good reaction content, tbh, but I just want to share because I really appreciate the medium of video games. For anyone that's interested, and hasn't yet gone down the rabbit hole, here are a few creators in several categories: AESTHETICS, ANIMATION, AND VISUAL COMMUNICATION: • eurothug4000 - mostly about environments, especially those that are cozy and tranquil • New Frame Plus - character animations, especially how to stretch limited animations to communicate lots of emotion and characterization • Afterthoughts - not just gaming. gaming content has mostly been about UI WHAT GAMING IS LIKE FOR NON-GAMERS • Razbuten's "Gaming for a Non-Gamer" series - informal experiments trying to find the best ways to create video game literacy • Monty Zander's "Noobus Humanus" series - more informal experiments, but more like a progress journal mostly following one genre of games • Etra's Games for Non-Gamers - informal experiments creating supplementary material to help teach game basics, including making games from scratch to act as tutorials COMMUNICATING "WHAT IT FEELS LIKE" • Mispap1 - cinematic edits of gameplay • Viva La Dirt League - comedy sketches that mostly take place within the worlds of video games, poking fun at gaming logic • Lazy Purple - notable "What it feels like to play" TF2 series • Boy Meets Girl - short videos showcasing different games. A little like Girlfriend Reviews, but with more gameplay and multiplayer focus. LOOONG-FORM VIDEO ESSAYS • Jacob Geller - not limited to video games, often morbid, always insightful • Noah Caldwell-Gervais - loooong in-depth looks at gaming staples. I don't know how this madlad manages to crank out feature-length video essays one after another. PLAYER INTERACTION AND PSYCHOLOGY • Daryl Talks Games - a mix of using games to explain psychology, and exploring narrative and design techniques that influence a player's mental state • Adam Millard-The Architect of Games - mostly exploring design techniques regarding player's mental state, with a little more industry-oriented content • Extra Credits - their gaming series (colored in green) is overwhelmingly about making humane game design: helping players understand how to have more fun, and encouraging designers to avoid exploiting players. There's also a lot about games as meaningful pieces of art. PERSONAL FAVES FOR FULL PLAYTHROUGHS, SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON ROLEPLAYING AND INHABITING THE GAME WORLD • Many a True Nerd - highly recommend his Life is Strange series • Materwelonz - highly recommend her Outer Wilds series

About Brandon, I'm not sure but a friend of mine just.. detest him (or at least his writing). But that's mainly in comparison to Robert Jordan, as Brandon was asked to finish the Wheel of Time series. The friend majord in English literature and teaches English and he feels there is so much difference in how the two authors write, their way to describe, their character vs world descriptions, how they construct their stories, and even down to prose (is that the English word?). Personally there are some authors writing in the same fantasy world (Warcraft-related novels) and some authors really had me hooked while others I more trudged my way through to get the story explained to me. Maybe it was the story arc in itself, maybe it was Real Life circumstances affecting how well I could get into the story, or it was just their way of writing that just didn't resonate or vibe with me. But then the author that I did not like the earlier books of really works for me now with their later books. Again, maybe it is me getting older and appreciating their style more, or I'm more involved in the stories, or whatever way their way of writing just works for me now in a way that it didn't before. So maybe it is their type of stories that you don't like but it might also just be how they write that bugs you.

Imma just drop this here, I barely ever look into the author of a book unless I feel inclined to find out more or I heard that a certain author has a certain style that I enjoy, otherwise I move along on a book by book basis and decide what to buy after getting a grasp of the content and the style. From the entire line of books I've read, I could perhaps name a handful of authors at best and could tell you about one or two at most from the top of my head. Buying books based on the author feels sort of like buying the book based on the quality and origin of the cover art imo.

Just a cliche plot (orphan kid, chosen one stuff etc.), with many flat cliche characters, eventhough it does have a cool hard magic system, if thats your stuff. The story just felt generic. But you really should give Stormlight-Chronicles a shot. It's sooo much better. The characters are unique and complex, not just devices to serve the plot. The magic also feels a lot more organic and isn't shoved down your throat like in mistborn. I'm absolutly convinced that you'd love Jasnah and Dalinar.

Hey! Just one question I have about your opinion of Brandon Sanderson (not to try and invalidate your opinion of him, though. I'm being genuine, and asking in good faith): Is your opinion of his work based on the one book you read of his? Because I'm extremely left-wing, and that's one reason I love his work. It's so inclusive, and so authentic and genuine. He takes stands against white washing, he vociferously supports LGBT voices and perspectives in his work, and he always reaches outside eof his experience when researching characters that comes from minority groups. He's talked to LGBT and disabled people to make sure the characters he writes who are either feel as legitimate and real as possible. And he has a consistent moral compass of "we can do better, every one of us, especially those who have been long entrenched in positions of power." All while being Mormon, which was a shocker to me when I first found out. I just ask about how many of his books you've read, because I can absolutely see how you wouldn't get a lot of this, of you've only read one of his books, especially some of his earlier books which would be from a mind less experienced and wise due to him being younger. Dont get me wrong, he absolutely has weaknesses. Like how he portrays female characters all pretty similarly. His male characters definitely have more variety and uniqueness.
@HannaHsOverInvested

I confess that I have only read the first of the mistborn books. I don't really know why he bugs me so much. There's no rational reason. It's mostly small things, and one larger thing I guess. I don't think that Kickstarter is for millionaires. But I also don't know if I would have had that same reaction if I didn't already have a dislike of him.
@Agonylord52
Жыл бұрын
@@HannaHsOverInvested Ah, okay. Yeah, Mistborn was one of his earlier works. It's not as rough feeling as his first, Elantris, but it's still not as polished as the newer stuff he puts out. Vin, the female lead, isn't exactly super complex. And the story does end up centering her around her romance arc. His female characters get much more well fleshed out in later works, though admittedly still not perfectly. The second arc of Mistborn has a good example of a better female character in Steris. The fandom adores her, so I'd recommend the second Mistborn Trilogy, the Wax and Wayne books (set in kind of a western/cowboy setting, about 100 yrs after the first 3 books). Though, if you ARE willing to give him another shot, I'd personally recommend Stormlight Archive more. It's his best work, both in critical and popular acclaim, and his personal opinion, as well as in the weight of preparation and work he's but into the story. He's been planning it for as long as he's been a writer, so it has this incredible depth of character, world building, and complexity that I'd argue rivals Tolkien. But I know any pressure, even a casual suggestion, makes me want to read a book even less. I'm don't do peer pressure lol. So, instead, I'll leave with this: Stormlight Archive, to me, has had such a powerful impact. I've begun to take it as a personal moral compass in many ways. It has lessons that I've taken, and have used to steer myself towards the person I want to be. A few quotes: ″I will take responsibility for what I have done,' Dalinar whispered. 'If I must fall, I will rise each time a better man." "Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before destination. I will protect those who cannot protect themselves. I will protect even those I hate, so long as it is right. I accept that there will be those I cannot protect!" I can't help but think you wouldn't regret reading it. You and I share a lot of opinions, and his work in this series especially feels so gratifying, to me. But of course you're free to not enjoy it! I'm just saying all this in the HOPE that you, and anyone else reading this, will find value in it. -------- And that's fair about Kickstarter, I can see why that would rub you the wrong way. He has expressed hesitance to use it in the past, but he's rationalized more and more that it helps prove his legitimacy to big industries like the film and TV industry, especially with the big headlines he received after getting the most-funded Kickstarter of all time. And that's not without merit. He uses it as a bargaining chip in his conversations with executives who are responsible for greenlighting those kinds of projects, He's said that the only way he'll ever agree to doing a movie or a tv show is if they give him creative control and veto power. So he wants to increase the perceived value of his brand as much as possible, so he can throw its weight around, while also pointing to the big dollar values his Kickstarters have drummed up to reassure their money-men about any potential big investment. But, full transparency, this is coming from someone who has backed his last two Kickstarters. I've dropped like $800 CAD total this year, alone. So I'm not exactly unbiased here lol

Howdy. Can I make some suggestions to add to your list for the future? Look, I occasionally enjoy one of these big budget, mass appeal schlock fest games too. Sometimes you are just in the mood for explosions and power fantasies. But the fact that 90% of the reactions on this channel are of those million dollar corporate murder-games is getting a bit stale ... And honestly, as a person who plays games AND as a designer and an artist, it's feeling like one of my favorite media is being severely pigeon holed and misapprehended. It's a bit like being a cinephile and watching someone totally new to movies be introduced to the medium almost exclusive by watching trailers for Michael Bay films. Or it's like being a writer / lover of words, and watching someone be introduced to literature through a succession of war memoirs. It's not that there's anything wrong with those things in themselves. It's just that they are not representative of the entire field. And while games are still a very young medium, comparatively, there have been a LOT of different genres and concepts explored in them, even back in the day. The smattering of suggestions below are not all my favorite games. I am not even saying all of them are better than some of these big budget offerings (honestly, the Witcher game you started this series with is just generally very hard to beat, as one example). Some of these games I do love, and some not so much. But they are, simply enough, different to the majority of what's been appearing on this channel. As a bonus for you, most of them are also much more heavily story and character oriented. So, here's a non-exhaustive list of recommendations, in no particular order: Disco Elysium - Recent indie breakout success. A surrealist mystery. Entirely story focused. Masterpiece. Life Is Strange Series - The writing isn't always my cup of tea, but a lot of people love these and they are heartfelt. Story oriented games mostly starring young queer teens exploring unusual superpowers (which are, on some level, obvious metaphors for being a queer teen and/or growing up and coming of age). Well, the one with Chloe doesn't feature a super power, per se. I think she just sasses people to persuade them. Myst / Riven / Obduction - the totality of the Cyan games library is essential to games history and especially the history of nonviolent, story centric games and environmental storytelling. Dear Esther - The quintessential "walking simulator" game that challenges many people's definition of what even qualifies as a game. Somehow managed to break through and find a proximity to the mainstream. The Stanley Parable - Product of roughly the same era of "walking sim" exploration and experimentation. Much more humorous in tone, and much more focused on formal deconstruction of the medium. Gone Home - Yet another one of these breakout walking sims, this one notable for the subtlety with which its story reveals itself, and its very grounded, earnest, down to earth nature. Pathologic 2 - A very Easter European game about suffering, death, and theatre. It's on the grim side, and does feature more violent themes, but is primarily focused on story, which in this particular case is something of an existentialist, somewhat Kafkaesque, somewhat Lynchian rumination, in that rather typical Eastern European way. Also Masterpiece (with very rough, sharp, pointy edges). Dark Nights With Poe and Munroe - I am choosing this somewhat recent game to stand in for the entire "full motion video" adventure game subgenre mainly for how utterly bonkers and unapologetically campy it is. Good, slightly cringey fun. Thimbleweed Park - Another modern revival of a classic, once ubiquitous game subgenre (story driven, humorous, point and click adventure puzzle games). I picked this one because it is very representative, while being modern enough to probably have several good trailer videos out there. Legend of Grimrock II - another "revival" game representing a long standing but somewhat fringe genre (first person, grid based dungeon crawlers / role playing games). Again, this genre is old and massive, but this particular one is comparatively modern and seen as a very good example, so it's likely to have a fair big of good material on it. Bard's Tale IV - Mostly same reasons as above, but this one is much more story oriented. My Time At Portia - One of those fun, colorful life-sim / farming / crafting games. I know I probably should have chosen Stardew Valley, but this one has better visuals and some actual voice acting, so I imagine the trailers will be more engaging. Divinity: Original Sin II - This will stand in for the broad genre of isometric, western role playing games. It's not exactly indie at this point, and I think you've already reacted to a cinematic trailer to a more recent game from the same developer. But it's such a good example. The Forgotten City - Just another really interesting story, exploration, mystery oriented game. Kentucky Route Zero - Wild, melancholic, surrealist story game. Dreamfall Chapters - Somewhere between indie and mainstream. A Kickstarter success story and a sequel to an older series of adventure games. Entirely story focused, entirely voice acted, very interesting and weird world building. Heaven't Vault - A game about historiography, linguistics, and archeology. Fascinating premise with very innovative gameplay loop, imo. Oxenfree - A bit of spooky (but not usually in a gross out or jump scare kind of way) horror about teens on a getaway, mostly a wistful parable about coming of age, loss, and the difficulty of moving on. Okay, I am just going to stop now. I am sure at least SOME of these are already on your list, and you simply haven't gotten around to them yet. But if not, I hope you put them on the docket. If you want actual trailer links, I suppose I can oblige at some point in the future, when I have another day with too much free time on my hands, but these are almost all so strongly story focused that you're unlikely to find a trailer that won't at least give a pretty good notion of the story's basic premise and mood. Also, obviously, this is just scratching the surface. There is A LOT of stuff out there beyond AAA / big budget / mass market games. Many of the above are, in fact, not particularly obscure and were in fact relative commercial successes. If you want to get even deeper down that rabbit hole, to games that most people haven't even heard of, my hipster self may also be able to help. But I'd just like to see more variety on this channel, above all.

Everywhere seems to be some weird pretentious nft thing where they want the players to do the developers job... oops I mean to be creative and make their own experiences together

It's hilarious how some white people think "white" is a slur lmao...you guys made this shit up, forced everyone else to follow these arbitrary rules, then get mad when people point out these rules exist. I don't think you've seen the Warhammer Vermintide trailers? I know you did some Total War videos, but Vermintide is more up your alley since it's focused on half a dozen characters trying to survive the apocalypse that ended Warhammer Fantasy. The second game's one year anniversary trailer is especially cool because they recreated their original launch trailer using actual Warhammer miniatures all painted up.

On the topic of your “clickbaity” video about white male fantasy authors, there’s a lot of racism and misogyny in that space unfortunately. Some unwittingly uphold white supremacist values in the defense of their preferred “traditional” fantasy and works of fiction. I’ve been trying to push more South American authors that haven’t received much notoriety in the states to people, but I have received pushback in the form of “anti-wokeness”, it’s so dumb.

@@nullakjg767 being white passing and being white are two different things. The concept of “whiteness” is a bit convoluted and is inherently racist, as it’s an exclusion, not an inclusion. There’s a lot of history there and it’s not pretty, but if you want to learn more about it, there’s lots of info out there like how the Irish were not considered to be white as well as other Europeans.

@@CChissel Its not the 18th century anymore, not to mention many irish made sure to become part of the US police force. Which makes it extra funny that people bring up the irish to prove that white people were discriminated against. Yeah, and now they join forces and burn crosses. And in america, if you look white, you get the white privlege. The end.
