Movie would be too short for the amount of content that need to be told. They need a series. Imagine Arcane and an Overwatch series going back to back. We get one each year, that way every year one series is off so they have time to animate it without crunch. But what to I know 1 year may be crunch. They might need 2 or 3.

Fun fact about the exchange of "maybe's" at the end: Japanese culture is usually very indirect in their conversations, especially when it's a conversation between a superior (like a parent) and someone under their authority (like their child). This goes doubly for a superior admitting they're wrong. So, culturally speaking, "Maybe I judged your doughnuts a little too harshly" was essentially Japanese parent code for "I misjudged your strength." But, because Japanese culture is also about harmony above all else (including independence at times), Kiriko's acquiescing to "Maybe [move] home for a little while" (emphasis on a little while) was probably both to be closer to train and to uphold harmony with her mother, giving a little where her mother had just given a little in her "maybe." Having seen some family dynamics in Okinawa a few years ago, this was VERY true to Japanese culture, and hit me all the more in the heart because of it!

For more context if you're interested: Kiriko's grandmother believed in an ancient fox spirit, but her mom chose to learn how to fight on her own instead. Kiriko's character is all about mixing traditional and modern values together, hence why she uses the spirit's abilities to heal/help teammates and her weapon training to fight. The glowing eyes and blue arch thing she did is her in-game ultimate ability that speeds up teammates, and lets them use abilities quicker, hence why the little girl and grandpa were suddenly able to chase the criminals out lol (Fun fact: Kiriko's mother trained Kiriko alongside Genji and Hanzo from the "Dragons" cinematic when they were all younger, so there's a fun little connection there)

To answer your question, no her mom didn't believe in the supernatural/spiritual stuff her grandmother (her mother) taught her. When they are in the kitchen, right before Kiriko tries to bite the donut, you can hear her mom say "do you know how ridiculous you sound? Oh don't worry mom, I'm protected by an imaginary animal spirit" So yeah, she thought it was just some BS her own mother, got her daughter worked into. It's one reason why she was so worried about Kiriko. Thinking she was banking her safety on fictional mysticism. Short summary: Grandma WAS actually paired with a Fox Spirit, that was tasked with protecting their city Kanezeka. The fox spirit protected the people by providing magical healing (something Kiriko learned from her grandmother). It's also where she picked up her sweet tooth for donuts, because apparently the fox spirit likes sweets, you can see images of grandma in the photos, and she's got donuts too. Kiriko's mother however, is purely physical with her way of seeing the world, and is a master martial artist. She trained the two other characters, Hanzo and Genji (in the Dragons cinematic you watched a long time ago), and also taught Kiriko. She wanted her daughter to fight with blade and fist. Kiriko, basically merged the two, and made her own path, of being a teleporting, magical healing, ally buffing ninja, who will kick the shit out of you if you mess with those she is protecting, and heal them if they get hurt.

Basically, her grandma taught her the ways of spiritual healing through the fox spirit. The mother however (who is a ninja), taught her the ways of martial arts. To the mother, all Kiriko and grandma were doing was cleaning shrines and doing funny yoga type training, but in reality she was being taught how to communicate and summon the fox spirit. Kiriko didn't want to choose between the two traditions, so she just trained with both of them, carrying on both traditions and becoming a hybrid healer/warrior type. Also important to note that Kirikos mother also trained Genji and Hanzo (the dragon brothers), and Kiriko was basically a niece to them.

There's a Japanese voiced version which would be nice to watch just for fun. It's not that The Mom didn't believe the fox spirit exists, it's that she didn't believe it's dependable as physical strength which she teaches and Kiriko seems to neglect. In the end Kiriko shows that both are useful together.

So, a few fun facts the sign language used in the short is JSL or Japanese sign language, hence why it may seem different to ASL(American Sign language) users. Kiriko's name is spelled with 霧 for kiri, which means mist, and 子 for ko, meaning child. Literally translated it means child of the mist, contextually translated it could have a few meanings, but one of which would be Child of illusions, another term for a follower of Inari, a Fox deity in Shintoism. Kiriko's mother trained not only Kiriko in martial arts, but also Hanzo and Genji, with the two latter often expressing a familial, uncle-niece relationship with Kiriko in game. Kiriko has a voracious sweet tooth because in japanese mythos, a woman possessed by or bound to a fox spirit is said to be driven to eating sweets by said spirit. Kiriko's clothing is based off of Shinto Shrine maidens' traditional attire of a red hakama (pleated pantings) a white kosode(a proto-kimono) with similarly colored hair ribbons, and hers specifically is patterned for Inari Okami, the Patron deity of fox spirits. The gates she summons are called Torii, and are symbolic of the barrier between the realm of man and the realm of gods. The golden paper talisman she placed on the man is called an ofuda The symbol on her headband simply says "kitsune", i.e. fox, but is rotated at a half right angle. the Handsigns Kiriko use in order while using her ult are: Kai-Seal of outer bonds, Sha- seal of the inner lion, Pyo- Seal of the great thunderbolt, and Zai, seal of the ring of Sun. oh, and what the mom says under her breath at 4:25 roughly means "totally is" in response to the donuts being for dinner. Edit: Hashimoto mean "base the bridge", a fancy way of saying a pillar, but its also a callback to the genji and hanzo short, which features the guy with the phone literally at the base of a small bridge. Edit 2: Mute people can in fact make some sounds, including laughing and screaming, as neither require the use of vocal chords

Fun fact about Signing is that babies can learn the hand movements WAY before they can say their first words. I'd advise everyone caring for a baby teach the kid a few signs. That way when poor kid is crying and you don't know why: they can actually say "throat hurts" or "want more cookies/milk/whatever". You can still teach them to speak, but you'll have avoided a lot of suffering in the meantime. Also as someone who knows American Sign Language (ASL) this video kinda threw me a bit. Same signs COMPLETELY different words.

@@HannaHsOverInvested not sure if its been explained but kiriko is possessed by the kitsune (spirit fox). the kitsune in Japanese mythology is almost like the gatekeeper of death. when she opens up them gateway's she's literally channeling power from the underworld. anyone who is a friendly on that path she creates (through the gateways) also gains a fraction of that power. hence why the little girl and grandpa's eyes glow and they become braver and stronger. ppl possessed by the kitsune are said to have a massive sweetooth hence the doughnuts. it's a beautiful bit of Japanese lore integration

Personally never played Overwatch but whenever I watch one of these stories I get so hyped to. I know you are not short of videos to watch but I would love to see your reaction to "The Reunion" and the "Squadron 42 Cinematic Teaser" . The Reunion is a short story from the game Star Citizen, arguably the most ambitious and expansive games ever created and the most expensive game game ever to develop. It has raised over $500 million USD over 10 years of development and still is years away from completion, although it is now playable in an Alpha state (Not Feature Complete). If you like The Reunion there are lots more shorter in lore Spaceship ads which are really well done (I can provide you w/ a list if you'd like). Squadron 42 is Star Citizen's single player Campaign w/ a star cast including Gary Oldman, Mark Strong, Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson and many more. I know you're already aware of Girlfriend Reviews, so maybe you caught some of it, but the actual game release part has been a shitshow. At this point, I'm just sad that nothing greater is going to come of these characters. They're so bright and fun, and the character design work is some of the best around. Then again, I've also never been the type to enjoy short films, one-shots, or vignettes. I think I'm happiest existing in a story space until I'm juuust starting to get tired of it. If the story happens to have a good off-ramp around that time, then it's perfect
