Hearing you talk about your surprise/admiration for the depth of development games go through to be what they are really warms my heart. Funnily enough, the reason I went to college to study video game design to work as a game developer was because of this series. In the first game you can unlock special feature stuff ( similar to movies) and it was viewing the concept art for characters and environments in the game that inspired me. Back when I was a kid I found many non gamers didn't appreciate it like I did, and today as I still work towards my dream career it only changed a bit, so I'm happy you get what many (even some gamers) take for granted!

I'm studying video game dialogue and narrative, and I couldn't agree with this sentiment more! Good writing is so often undervalued by the industry, making games like GOW all the more impressive for actually putting in the effort. It's a shame for every one game that gets it right, there's usually two that end up like the FF7 "remake." It's demotivating that so many people don't seem to realize how important such subtleties are, but my hope is that perhaps folks like us can remind them what they're missing.

Some versions of the myth consider Odr an aspect of Odin (usually the same ones that conflate Freya and Frigg), but the literal translation of the name is 'Fury' or 'inspiring rage'. One of the more interesting figures we learned about in World Literature in College was Gilgamesh. He was literally the first hero whose story was written down on stone tablets in like 4000 BCE (AD). He ruled the ancient kingdom of Uruk and was said to be 2/3 divine and was meant to be a servant of the gods will upon the human race, but he was a bit of a VERY arrogant man who basically just gave the gods the finger and did as he pleased. He really wasn't much of a hero by today's standards, but he did keep his kingdom safe, so I guess that makes him a hero by that times standards. The gods were so pissed that Gilgamesh wouldn't obey them that they created Enkidu who they formed from clay, but Enkidu couldn't understand human emotions and things like that so the gods sent the 'divine harlot' to sleep with him. Afterwards Enkidu went to Uruk to subdue Gilgamesh and force him to obey the gods but when Enkidu challenged Gilgamesh to a contest of strength they found they were both equals and actually became friends. Shortly after Gilgamesh and Enkidu go on a few adventures until the goddess Ishtar came to desire Gilgamesh for herself. She went to Gilgamesh and offered her hand in marriage, but Gilgamesh said no because he had heard tales that she was very promiscuous. This pissed her off so she went to her dad and demanded that the gods release the Bull of Heaven, a creature so powerful even the gods feared it, to punish Gilgamesh. So the gods released the Bull, but Gilgamesh and Enkidu slew it and at this point the gods had had enough with Enkidu so they took back the life they gave him, this was possible since he was made of clay. Gilgamesh was devastated and began to worry over his own mortality so he traveled all across the world seeking immortality. He traveled to the underworld where he learned of a flower that would make him immortal but the flower was really rare and difficult to reach. Finally he found the flower and was bringing back home before he decided to stop and bathe. He placed the flower down on the shore and went to bathe but while he was bathing a snake smelled the flower and ate it. The snake shed it's skin and became young again, which people believed then to be why snakes shed their skin. Gilgamesh found the snakes skin where he left the flower and just laughed at all the effort he went through to become immortal only for it to be taken away at the last minute. That story always stuck with me, I think it's just because of how cool it is that the story of Gilgamesh is literally the first written record of a hero in human history. Just kind of a neat glimpse into the far past. There's also an anime series called Fate Stay Night (and several spin-offs) that depict Gilgamesh. It's a sorta of Pokemon-esque anime but instead of cute monster creatures the people summon ancient mythological heroes to battle it out in a free for all battle royale for the Holy Grail which grants one wish to the winner.

For a bit of extra knowledge: in the playstation 4 god of war, kratos has taken on a calm lifestyle in norse mythology. After his new wife, Freya died, with her last wish to have her ashes spread over the tallest peak in all the realms, Kratos and his new son Atreus, who doesn't know that he is a god, set out for the mountain. Kratos strongly regrets his past and tries to hide every bit of it from his son to protect him. This doesn't work eventually and Atreus finds out. Kratos thought that his son would hate him for what he has done, but Atreus seemed okay with it. At the end of the story for the game we see that kratos has as he says, "nothing more to hide" as he finally takes off the leather bands that were covering his burn marks from the chains.

the story goes like this: Ares, the god of war, tricked Kratos into killing his family for the power to defeat all enemies in battle. their ashes has now seeped into his skin, turning white, thus his alias "The Ghost of Sparta". he killed Ares for this, and became a God of War (as the title goes). he can't forgive himself from all he done, so he tried to commit suicide, just to be with his family, but the gods wont let him because he is part of the gods, so at that point, he sets himself to kill all gods. fast forward to the final event, he finally killed Zeus, his father, with the help of Pandora. and now all the gods are dead, he can finally kill himself to reunite to his family. mysteriously, someone healed him. as Kratos seeing the entire Greece in ruins, he decides to leave the place and live another good life on another place. and that leads to the story of God of War PS4

This still leaves out three other games in the series before the 2018 game. Kratos is such a unique character that people forget about because all they see is the blood, guts, and vengeance without the tragedy and the human weakness that drive his motivations.

Your thoughts at 5:44 just summarized the war every child / adult has to fight constantly with the non-gaming parent / uncle / aunt / gf / wife / neighbor / their dog / frogs / aliens etc. Legend has it that game industry artists and musicians also fought this war when their craft was once dubbed "not art".

I think the best way you can describe video games, is that they are interactive movies. Or at least (imo) the best ones are. They tell engaging stories with engaging characters that they connect to you. And the one thing that I think people don't actively acknowledge is sound design. Take the "Old Soldier" cinematics for warcraft that you've already watched. Varok Saurfang has a theme song that is played all through those videos that just ache with sadness and loss. And the best part is, they take the same collection of notes, but in lower, or higher key to subtly connect back to the original.

Nemesis, most people misunderstand the word and have never heard of the mythical figure. One definition of the word is a long standing rival but it also means the agent of someone's downfall. A nemesis does not need to be an enemy, just someone or something that would cause an undoing. The Greek goddess Nemesis is the one who would punish those who thought they were above the gods. The interesting bit is the figure has actually existed prior to Greek mythos and can be found in other cultures under different names.

Every time people ask about myths i tell the myth of the Tupi-guarani curupira and caipora. Curupira is a kid with inverted feet and red hair that tricked colonial hunters into getting lost, by making them follow his footprints trying to get back home. Caipora is similar but is seen more as a protector of the forest. She rides a boar. It is disputed if caipora is male or female, or even if they are the same entity or cousins lol

Lesser known Greek Mythology monsters. The myrmidons. Some sort of monstrous teeth were planted in the ground and ant-like warriors grew from them. They were a great military cohort because they all worked together in unity (the kind of discipline and training that a Phalanx needs in order to be effective).

To be honest, I usually do not find much about the greek Primordial gods (or Protogenoi) in entertainment. These gods (according to my sources) were the spawn of Khaos, the first of the Protogenoi and absolute Void; and these were Ouranos, Gaia, Erebos, Tartaros, Eros, Nyx, Aether, Hemera, Pontos, Thalassa, Phanes, Physis, Chronos, and Ananke. These gods are the universe around us (Light and Dark, Day and Night, Skies and Seas, Oceans and Lands, Time and Space, Nature itself, and so much more).

Oh, hey, all those courses I took in media history and development are finally useful! You mentioned that even non-cinephiles today know what movies are, how much is invested in making them, etc, and that's true -- 130 years after the medium was invented. Film was considered a gimmick in 1900, and a fad in 1910. It was called "theater for peasants" in the 30s. It wasn't until the 50s that the art community still started looking at film as a legitmate form of art. Comic books have been around since the 30s, by the 70s, they were still derided, even though we were starting to see comic book stories written by adults for adults. Even now, 50 years past the invention of the graphic novel, they don't get the same treatment that written fiction gets, but they do get a lot more respect than they used to. Rock music is 70 years old. It only started to be seen as art in the 70s. Rap music is STILL fighting to be taken seriously outside its core audience. All of these are legitimate art forms. All of them take a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to pull of well. All of them deserved more respect than they got in their formative years. But none of them were respected as the art forms they are until the generation that grew up on them became adults that made them for other adults, and even then, it often took another generation to really get that respect. Video game narratives are relatively new. Yeah, we had adventure games before we even have graphics, but it wasn't until the technology reached the point that the stories could become truly immersive in terms of graphics, music quality, etc that we started getting the kind of stories that you've been seeing. Gen X grew up on Pac Man and Donkey Kong. By the time these stories became possible, most of that generation had abandoned video games as "childish things." The Millenials who grew up playing some of the early immersive narratives are now adults making Last of Us and God of War, but it really won't be until the Gen Z kids have grown up and are building upon that foundation that video games will really be seen as art form it is. It's tragic and it shouldn't be that way, but every form of pop media in the last 120 years has had to go through this process.

An interesting thing that wasn't mentioned in the video is that for every god that Kratos killed, a consequence was spread across humanity. When he killed Poseidon, the world was drowned, when he killed Helios (the embodiment of the Sun), the world sank into darkness, when he killed Hades, the souls were lost and without fate, when he killed Hermes, the diseases were spread for mankind, when he killed Hera, all the plants in the world died and when he finished with Zeus, chaos was unleashed on the world. He also killed the three Sisters Of Fate(responsible for shaping the fate of every being); Medusa and her two sisters(in the game Medusa is basically a race called Gorgons and Medusa herself along with her two sisters are the queens of the Gorgons, one of them is called Euriale); Hercules, his half brother; Perseus and some other great and well known people from Greek mythology.

Fan fact: Κράτος (=might) was a lower god in mythology. He was one of the guardians of the sacred fire that Prometheus gave to humans. The other one was βία (=violence). Zeus ordered them to guard the fire and when Prometheus gave it to humans it was them that handled his torture by order of Zeus.

God of War 3 intro's animation style kinda reminds me of Tyranny trailers and intro. If you liked the looks of it, you'll probably like them too. Tyranny is quite less popular game than most of stuff you usually react to (on average approx 10-30 times less sold copies of a game, but I totally loved it), it's also less "cinematical" - mostly because it's turn-based game with isometric view, with story driven by tons of text rather than cinematics or pure action. It's also one of the reasons why there are just few one or two minutes long trailers instead of some one badass-looking-five-minute-long cinematic or gameplay trailer. So if you'd make reaction video it most likely wouldn't be very long. And best order of watching would be (1) Announcement Trailer, (2) E3 Trailer, (3) Animated Intro Cinematic, (4) Bastard's Wound Gamescom Cinematic Trailer and (5) Bastard's Wound - Release Trailer (although this one is quite different than others - it's actually closer to an expansion's gameplay trailer)

In Greek mythology, Kratos is the divine personification of strength, the son of the Titan Pallas and the Okeanid nymphe Styx. Ironically, in ancient Greek sources, Kratos is portrayed as a dumb, overly violent thug who is unquestioningly loyal to Zeus and whose job is to enforce Zeus’s authority over all the other deities; whereas I’ve read that, in the video game series God of War, Kratos is apparently portrayed as a renegade demigod who kills all the major deities in the Greek pantheon, including Zeus.

A part of greek myth I love but never gets spoken about are the Gigantes, people think because of their name they were giants (as with many greek myths there were later updates and confusion creating two differing stories) they were a human sized army powerful warriors that the gods feared led by Typhon (who is sometimes believed to also be a titan). Typhon was a kratos-like character who the gods feared and attempted to destroy. Theres not much known about the Gigantes war with Olympus but its said to have shaped the world. In later myths the Gigantes were said to be snake legged monsters but I prefer the idea of them being powerful warriors who the gods feared.

For some not very known goddess of Greek mythology is Maracia (the spelling is similar to that) who was chthonian (a god that dwells on earth or underworld) who started life as hercules’ daughter and was given godchild at her death praying to Persephone (hades wife). Hades then decided to give Marcia godhood to be a gift to Persephone as a daughter and the dominion over blissful death. I’m sorry that this is not the best articulated comment.

The reason why ppl don’t look at games like movies is because they grew up on Tetris and solitaire…games that had no stories behind them. Movies have always really been story driven where games it took quite some time to get to telling a story while blended with entertainment.
@vladicus81

Movies have been around a lot longer than video games, and even if someone isn't a cinephile they've still seen at least some movies in their life to know what they're like. Even though special effects and the way we tell stories has evolved a lot over time, the concept of what a movie is hasn't changed all that much over time. When games first started getting made, the technology was very limited and there wasn't any kind of story involved, so it was more like a digital version of a normal game like ping pong. As time went on and technology improved storylines started working into them but were treated more as just context for why the action is happening. So by the time that the story of video games started getting to the point that they could be attractions themselves the stereotype that games were shallow things for nerdy kids was firmly established. That point of view has drastically changed in recent years, but for people that still really haven't been that exposed to them, that stereotype is still all they know. Obviously it varies from game to game, but a lot of them are more like interactive stories now than just a simple game.

In terms of Mythology that doesn't get it's due, I present to you... Hephaestus He was essentially, the "Craftsman of the Gods", almost anything and everything you could consider an "object", a weapon, or tool, the god's used, was made by him. He created the Golden Throne of Olympus, Poseidon's Trident, Apollo's Golden Chariot, Athena's Spear, he even made the armor of Hercules and Achilles. In some stories, he made the very lightning bolts Zeus throws. He even created Pandora, the first woman. He was the only "ugly" god amongst perfectly beautiful immortals, while young he was cast out of the heavens for his deformity. He was ordered by Zeus to marry to Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, to stop a war of the gods all competing for her hand in marriage (she was not faithful to him.) Some versions of mythology say that the fires Prometheus stole to give humanity, came from Hephaestus's forges. To blacksmiths, sculptors, and engineers, he was THE god. and DAMIT I wish he had more renown. He had so much subtle, but vast, influence. Pieces of his work are quite literally in almost every single god's story, and wouldn't have been possible without him. But, he doesn't get the "credit" of what's been made possible through his creations, it's just his "job". HIs works are usually considered "heavenly" and "of Olympus".

In African Mythology there is the belief that everything has a spirit. From birth every person has a spiritual twin (usually of the opposite gender) that lives in the spirit world. People would use various methods to communicate with their twin (sometimes by drilling holes in their skulls) in order to perform Divination. I wish media would draw inspiration from more varied mythologies. There are so many interesting stories out there.

in regards to society's lack of understanding what games are: to be fair, video games as a medium are both still very new (only really being a thing since the 70s with pong) AND all those early games for the first few decades were very simple and were, in fact, mostly for a younger audience. its really only since the 90's that games were even able to develop more complex play styles and story lines and they've been moving at lightspeed since. for reference, goldeneye 007 (the first modern first person shooter) and the first halo game are only 4 years apart

One of my favorite creatures from myth has to be the Wendigo from native american culture. It's a former human who became cannibalistic to survive their hunger, only to become a monster with a hunger that can never be sated. And the way to kill a wendigo is only by putting it's cold heart into a fire until it burns.

Whenever I heard the term "under-appreciated mythology figure" my mind goes to Hestia, goddess of the hearth, home, domesticity, virginity, family, and the state in Greek mythology. She is rightfully an Olympian but often forgotten by many. I think a lot of great stories can be with her. She is essentially the fire that keeps the Greeks alive.

In Greek mythology, Kratos (or Cratos) is the divine personification of strength. He is the son of Pallas and Styx. Kratos and his siblings Nike ("Victory"), Bia ("Force"), and Zelus ("Zeal") are all essentially personifications of a trait. Kratos is first mentioned alongside his siblings in Hesiod's Theogony. So there is a basis in actual Greek mythology for the god Kratos, which the game makers of God of War have taken and used in creating there own version of Kratos, where he ends up killing the whole of the Greek pantheon (which is what the first 3 games in the series cover). Subsequently they move him along in the latest game of 2018 entitled God of War (4), (which is a reboot to the series with far updated graphics and much more lifelike environment) to Midgard (which is one of the realms of the Norse Pantheon), where he sets up a home with a female frost giantess and together they have a son Atreus, with the game starting at a point where Kratos' frost giantess wife has died and he and his son are preparing her funeral pyre together. There is also a game in the works at the moment in which Kratos will encounter Thor.

To answer your question about why gaming is not understood widely outside the gaming community, it is most likely because of how “new” it is especially as a story telling medium. Movies, television, and comics have been used to tell stories for the better part of a century at least. Video games are quite new by comparison. This issue was exacerbated by the technological limitations of the early years which meant they could only fit very little plot into the game if at all. There were still games where the plot was a major part, but they tended to be fewer and far between with a narrower audience. It was during the PS2, Game Cube, and original X-box years when the technology reached the point where games could become more cinematic thus more story driven with more complicated plots. Fittingly enough this was also the era that gave us the original God of War.

Watching trailers is nice and all but sometimes I wish you could delve deeper into the stories without having to play the game and this was perfect. As an author, I'm sure you'll like the more story-oriented games, not to hate on the ones that are more multiplayer and service oriented cause I know they can have cool lore, but really if you like mythology and great character development games like God of War and Hellblade is where is at imo, you should check more content like this.

Kratos is not in greek mythology. The story of the games inserts him so well tho, that its hard to not think of him as a part of it. Its absolutely perfect. The gods in greek mythology are petty and vengeful, they keep betraying eachother. Not to mention the cycle of war between parents and children. The story of Kratos fits so well.
