Honestly, i feel you on the rap subject. The only rapper i can really listen to is Prilly T. Which is merely the rap persona of the much larger Hungry Lights metal project. That project truly does take what makes rap inspiring as a storytelling medium and plays on the emotional strength so few rappers tap into.

When it comes to pop, you should check out Black Celebration and Music for the Masses by Depeche Mode. Both of these albums were influential to Trent Reznor with Nine Inch Nails, and the albums are both really brooding and have emotional intensity. You should check them out, though I need to listen to more by them, like Violator

Absolutely nobody asked but here's some of my own picks, in no particular order: - Story of the Year - (early-ish) Silverchair - Frost* (one of my absolute fav bands even counting metal) - Knower - Strung Out - Red (yes, that one butt rock band with strings) - lapix - Fair to Midland - Bon Jovi if i'm in the mood - early lostprophets is great, regardless of you-know-what - Foo Fighters - auvic - Huaska (bossa nova meets rock. sometimes metal-adjacent but tangential enough for me to not call it metal) And honorable mention, I keep coming back to listen to FKA Twigs' "Pendulum" Speaking of which I almost forgot Pendulum, good band

I love Portishead too but if you haven't checked out Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and if you don't love that record you will NEVER enjoy rap; that album blew my FRIGGIN' mind and I'm a die-hard metalhead. It's heavier than some metal albums out there and kicks so much ASS. Da Mystery of Chessboxin' is a SPECTACULAR rap song by the Wu-Tang clan.

What is your opinion on bluegrass in general? I always gravitated to it because of the speed and virtuosity in which many artists play. To me, it always felt like "the metal of folk music." There are plenty of bands out there that tread that line like The Native Howl but most tend to lean heavier on the bluegrass side in a genre I often hear referred to as "blackgrass". Your musical recommendations are always good and you've inspired me to give hyperpop another go as I tend to enjoy any kind of aggressive music and it seems like the closest I'll get to "the metal of pop", an elusive category I've been looking to fill.
@whatsinameme5258

I don't listen to a lot of Bluegrass, but I've never disliked it. I always preferred it to "regular country" (meaning the 90s/2000s pop country I grew up listening to) but I have not often gone out of my way to listen to it. There's definitely more energy to it and more interesting instrumentation.

I love Johnny Cash, especially his last 6 American albums. I realise that most of my favourite non metal bands are rather old. Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Techno (Don't listen much on my own but enjoy it in wipEout), Dr John, CCR, Primus and a bunch of soundtracks for movies and games (Star Wars, Cabaret, Dirty Harry, Batman (1989), Red Faction, Ratchet and Clank 2002 and Plant vs Zombies Garden Warfare). I have boomer taste. There is also some obscure South African bands I like. Side note: If you think that modern pop music is bad, then you are not ready for the cookie cutter and extremely stupid Afrikaans pop industry. Al the songs sound the same and have brain rotting lyrics.

You don't like rap? I don't really either, but I have two recommendations that have persisted from my teenage years. You might appreciate them if you can get the aesthetic of 100 gecs. Two pioneers in the genre: VIPER kzitem.info/news/bejne/lX-or4JjhKmGeKw the best opener of any album. also recommend tracks 3 and seven. I would always show viper to my old friends in high-school who liked mainstream rap, and hearing them unironically say "dude that's fucked" just cracked me up every time. obviously viper himself is not rapping ironically, but it has the ability to be listened to as a post-postmodern ironic masterpiece. The beats are also genuinely something completely unique. Also: Young lean, classic from the vaporwave era: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1Kqd2IegsqCBfqg also cracks me the fuck up. Truly ahead of his time. Also good soundtrack in this one: kzitem.info/news/bejne/y6euyKaQopOrjXY , a third classic: kzitem.info/news/bejne/16iHvZx8sqWBfo4
