My goodness, what a flawless, emotional and powerful performance. After all these years, I still come back to re-watch. I wish the full version was posted here on YT (at the end of the song, she gets a roaring standing O, and, arm raised in a fist, says, "Nelson Mandella must go free!"). This episode must have aired around 1986 or 1987. When i watched it then I wept. Over 30 year later - post-apartheid, and years after Nelson passed on - I still weep.

Absolutely. But you really have to catch her band live to "get it." She always has smokin' musicians like Ronnie Drayton with her and they put on a POWERFUL show every single time. She brought down the house at SWSW in Austin in 2006. I was proud of her--even people who didn't really know who she was were dancing all over the place within a song or two.

I remember. He was still in prison during this performance. At the end she raised her fist in the air & spoke, "Nelson Mandela must go free!" Too bad it was cut out in this video. Shame!

The Bumblebee's performance of Chandelier from episode 2 of "The Masked Singer" is what brought me back to this recording of Ms. Hendryx. Everyone is saying that Bumblebee is Gladys Knight, but I'm listening and wondering if it's actually Nona Hendryx. #JustAThought. Both women are great singers with phenomenal voices.

I think it's her too. Gladys seems way smaller now as she performed at the Superbowl. These two women have very similar singing voices. Close your eyes and you would swear it's Gladys singing this song. Omg. However, most of the clues do point towards Gladys.
@Ladywrip

@@rodburnett5935: Yeah, those clues pretty much confirm (for me at least) that that's DEFINITELY Ms. Knight in that costume, but now that I've listen to Nona's voice again I can hear a few distinctive differences between their tones... that Bee is definitely Gladys Knight.

Last night I was thinking about this song. I listened again. This song hit me with a surprise impact when I bought the CD. I literally cried while hearing it. Mandela was imprisoned, musicians were boycotting South Africa because of apartheid. Now journalist Caitlin Johnstone has tweeted: "The [Julian] #AssangeCase is this generation's Nelson Mandela moment. Get on the right side of it or be forever judged by history." I realised the lyrics apply perfectly to Julian, as the extradition hearing goes forward at the Old Bailey Courthouse, and they keep Assange in a horrific physical state. Without treatment, without the means to assist his lawyers in his defense. Shame on the USA. Shame on the UK judge, who has such conflicts of interest, she should not be hearing the case. Julian Assange is a journalist, imprisoned and persecuted for many years.

Jean Tyrell (not sure of spelling) replaced Diana Ross. Cindy Birdsong replaced Florence Ballard in the Supremes. That left Patti and the Bluebelles with three members. They changed their name to Labelle a short time afterwards and the rest is history.
