I've been Nordic Walking in the UK (and Florida) for over a year, and it's transformed my life. I wish I'd had this video when I first began; it's one of the best I've seen (I'll definitely send my friends in Colorado to see Nate! James Hardiman, The Happy Walker.

When I ordered my Leki poles there were no instructions so I found this very helpful. Really, the "hardest" part of Nordic walking is setting up the poles so I found this to be a useful beginner's technique video.

Great introduction to Nordic Walking. I just got 10 sets of Leki poles and am teaching a unit to my students in physical education class.

Just got a set of poles today and went out to the forest... found the rubber things annoying and the poles loud. Eventually developed a technique which felt easy and natural. Guess what... I was 90% right. Great vid. Thanks.

James Hardiman, The Happy Walker. Way to go Nate, a real nice video, amongst a bunch that don't always come up to scratch.

Get Black Diamond flick-lock poles. I hated the twist mechanisms (don't over tighten, but don't under-tighten either nonsense)

Thanks for the video, I though in nordic walking the hand had to open up when it reach the back and it had to grap the pole again when it was move to the front, I am may be wrong but I though its an important fact in order to let the flow circulate better, isnt it? Thanks again. Saludos

Arm technique is a bit soggy. He needs to straighten the elbows and push more with the core muscles. Otherwise it is ineffective.

Using straight arm is a better workout. Bending at the elbows are not as effective. It seems that most Americans bend at the elbow while Europeans tend to use straighter arms with out bending at the elbows.

I agree - the technique shown here doesn't seem much more effective than just walking without the poles. It does provide a great walking workout but I think has to be done more intensively than this. Just my opinion.

Larry good points. Biomechanically two items need to be addressed that this video is a far cry from accomplishing. But two basic questions that need to be attended to are the following: 1. Why does one have straps? (Especially if they have a death grip on the poles. Then one does not use them resulting in improper technique and execution of technique) I have reviewed ALL Leki advertisement (instructional/promotional) videos and they all fail in proper technique with respect to the hand pole/grip interface. It ALL starts from here. 2. Proper execution when the above is addressed is then to use a bent arm and drive back with the elbow bent as the initial movement. Done properly one enlists the large muscle groups biomechanically versus the tiny strip of triceps... RESULT of larger shoulder muscle engagement (the latismus Dorsi and to a lesser degree the pectoralis contribution) and it only follows that one explicitly will engage the core to accelerate the core through. IN PLAIN TERMS: The smaller triceps has minimal benefit aerobically if the action is a straightening at the elbow. By pulling like one is pulling onto a heavy bell rope in a cathedral, mimicking this action, one engages large muscles, following a larger requirement of Oxygen and more utilization of energy stores (read fat metabolized). This results in increased weight loss and increased aerobic capacity (read: healthier heart) by sung more oxygen. In the end you are either just a triceps walker or large shoulder/trunk muscle walker, the former is only straightening at the elbow where the latter is pulling the pole back elbowing the air behind you so the predominant movement is at the shoulder and not at the elbow. Big muscle engagement greater energy and oxygen use, small muscle use, then one has to question why they would have the poles. Again it all starts with the hands and using the straps which i find most coaches are naive of and very little critical feedback attends to this. Dr. PJ Rawlek, Endurance Unlimited Inc.

You should be swinging your arms from the shoulder not the elbows. You have little push and zero follow through.

It is false advertising when you describe the next 3 minutes of anyones time that you will be showing them how to nordic ski walk and what you are doing is advertising for the company on their product. Disingenuous!! 15 seconds of instruction and 3 minutes of push the product.
