After the shambled fall foliage trip with Reading T-1 2102, we had to turn plan B - the Strasburg Railroad. On a chilly autumn afternoon, we documented Norfolk & Western M-1 475 pulling the railroad's daily tourist trains. The over 100 year old locomotive performed flawlessly, working up the grades of America's oldest operating railroad. The whistle on 475 in this video is a Southern Pacific 6 Chime.
Norfolk & Western 475 is a 4-8-0 "Mastodon" (M Class) type steam locomotive built in 1906 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. Locomotive 475 was in the original order of M Class steam locomotives by the N&W, where she would go on to haul heavy freight and coal trains. Eventually replaced by the N&W's larger engines, 475 found work on branch lines, such as the Virginia Creeper out of Abingdon VA. 475 ran for 50 consecutive years before being retired in 1956 and with an uncertain future, change hands until she wound up at a scrapyard. She was saved from scrap in 1980 and would change hands multiple time again, until eventually winding up at the Strasburg Railroad in 1991. She was restored by 1993 and has been operating ever since.
