Senior Lecturer in Early Years and Norlander Lucy Krebs and first-year students led a virtual taster session celebrating children’s individuality, community and creativity at our next Norland Unwrapped session.
The taster class is titled Culture and Creativity: Self-Expression for Belonging. The session combines content from both our degree and Norland diploma to give you a flavour of what studying at Norland is like.
The first half of the session explores communication in its various forms and its influence on how children can express their wants and needs. We also explore the influence of regional differences on how we speak and celebrate the differences that make us who we are. We also looked at ways we can give children a voice when they might struggle to speak.
In the second half of the session, we consider the importance of community and how the learning community can be used to promote belonging, teamwork and creativity.
We'll also look at the philosophies of Reggio Emilia, an educational philosophy and pedagogy (an approach to teaching), by getting creative with light and shadow. This enables us to look at the value of open-ended resources when working with children.
